I’m sorry. I’m not very good at gauging tone and tend to come off meaner than I intend. Could someone provide with an alternative wording to my earlier comment that would be considered not rude?

Apology accepted! On the face of it, without enough context or explanation, it can come off like a dumb idea for the very reason you mentioned. And in my haste to post, I probably didn’t make it clear enough that:

  • It’s a Japanese-dubbed, English-subbed B&W edit of all three ST films broken into 15-20 min chapters, each with their own text prologue.

  • I’m planning on using these extra prologues and massaged subtitles to help flesh out/change plot points.

  • The Scarif footage plan is to focus on Jyn/Cassian/KSO’s break-in and squeeze in as much of the ground assault as comfortable & necessary for context, but leave out as much of the actual space-battle stuff as possible.

  • The footage would be showing up at least halfway into the edit so I’ll have time to mention & hopefully reinforce the fact the FO is using both new tech AND Imperial-era surplus (which is where things like the Imperial-era Exegol fleet are drawn from), and Leia put together her Resistance cells using Rebel-era surplus that was abandoned, mothballed, or sold for scrap.

The Stormtrooper point is actually a good one and one I’ve thought about. For instance, I also want to put Cassian’s informant meetup earlier in the piece and the main red flag about that is the different trooper helmets. I’m hoping it will come off as if this FO detachment stuck policing a trading post is using out-dated equipment, aka old helmets. But it’s ultimately all in how the cut plays out.

And even if the ROGUE ONE footage plan doesn’t work, I would still have footage of Finn/Rose doing a similar type of enemy infiltration to do something that helps the attack on the Exegol fleet, just using the TLJ footage and marrying it with the Falcon scene from the beginning of ROTS and having Han flying the Falcon instead of Poe (which I might still do as well). But I’m trying to come up with the best reason for that infiltration (whomever does it) and I’m hitting a blank. Hence, the ask!

Hivemind help request:

I’m working on a B&W sequel trilogy edit that, among other things, takes the Sith fleet attack from TROS and moves it up to happen during the slow chase of TLJ.

That thread breaks down like so:

  • In TFA, Leia & Co find out about Starkiller & the Sith fleet existence at the same time,

  • they attack Starkiller as the more immediate threat since they don’t know the Sith fleet’s location yet,

  • Han (who survived Starkiller in this version) leaves immediately to round up an attack fleet with location to be sent to him later,

  • R2 fills out BB8s map (which was to the fleet not Luke) to figure out where the Sith fleet is but Snoke & company ambush D’Qar before that info can be send to Han, & Leia doesn’t want to risk the transmission being intercepted and losing the element of surprise,

  • Finn & Poe are eventually able to sneak away during the slow chase to lead that attack, while Holdo maintains the chase to keep the FO focused on them,

  • The Sith fleet is defeated,

  • Holdo maneuver helps Leia & survivors make it to Crait where the FO fleet, tho too stunned to mount a ground assault, sends in the Dreadnought that Leia avoided earlier in this version, so that battle now takes place over Crait while the Falcon heads down & picks up survivors and they jump away.

So I’ve now decided I want to use some ROGUE ONE footage as actions of a parallel cell of Leia’s group doing work to set up the Sith fleet assault while Holdo is distracting FO command (specifically as much of the Scarif infiltration as possible) and for that I need help figuring out a justification for that infiltration mission.

Like: maybe R2 doesn’t complete that map and the Jyn’s Scarif upload is the rest of the map?

Or maybe she’s uploading comms codes to allow the Republic force to jam FO signals in & out of Exegol, to keep the fleet from signaling for help or/and communicating with the Nav tower for directions?

Thoughts?

PS - I’m not necessarily worried about anachronisms because I play up the fact that FO and Leia’s group are using Imperial-era surplus, so with some judicious editing & a tad bit of disbelief suspension that should be fine.

Thanks for the interest!

So here’s where things stand:

  • I’ve got all the footage broken into individual chapters and roughly settled where it should go in the revised timeline (the Exegol fleet storyline bumped back to be concurrent with the TLJ slow-speed chase, for instance).

  • Basic color correction has been applied (both B&W and full color for special sections).

  • Japanese audio has been imported or synced to unique footage (from fanedited sources) where needed.

  • Chapter intro/outro’s rough assembled.

The only big thing I haven’t started yet is laying on the subtitles.

In terms of a workprint, I’ll make a few individual chapters available for comment before the whole story is ready to send out as a workprint. They’ll be from all over the story, but since each chapter has its own intro prologue, folks should still be able to follow along well enough no matter the order.

I really really love this puppet idea, so so much… but please do not cut the closeup of that cute little laughing alien baby, whatever you do!!!

That laughing baby is legitimately one of my favorite things in this movie. And this whole puppet thing as a nod to C3PO doing storytime with the Ewoks in ROTJ was a real nice touch as well. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

I think that’s the whole point, right? The First Order had scared the galaxy into submission at that point. Luke’s arc in TLJ was about accepting his status as the legend the galaxy needs- no one showed up to help the Resistance on Crait, but after Luke’s mythical stand-off with the First Order, his legend was back stronger than ever and it inspired the entire galaxy to rise up.

I think it’s cool how the general galaxy has an arc where they became complacent after the relatively small Rebellion took down the Empire, and ignored the warning signs of fascism coming back. The New Republic is wiped out, fascism returns, and the people are terrified. It’s the legend of Luke that inspires them to realize they can’t just rely on the Resistance as they did with the Rebellion, and everyone stands up across the galaxy. It’s a pretty relevant and important message to the real world right now too.

That is a cool idea but it’s frustrating how much the theatrical versions just keep TELLING us this is what’s happening rather than SHOWING any part of it happen.

For example, how does anyone other than the handful of folks on Crait know about Luke’s actions? I’m assuming none of the First Order troops are raving about it. So assuming the Republic survivors can’t stop talking about it, but is there enough of them to spread the story across the galaxy that quickly and convincingly? Probably not because you could fit all the survivors in the Falcon with room to spare. Was there video? If not, does the Republic fabricate something to broadcast as propaganda? Getting the word out would be an interesting story. I’m not asking for a spinoff movie, but doing the barest minimum (like having some kind of broadcast of Luke on Crait) to make the audience not have to suspend a huge amount of disbelief would have gone a LONG way. Pics or it didn’t happen, as I believe the kids say these days.

So some extra inset shots of Star Destroyers showing up over planets or other people listening to Palpatine’s broadcast or watching Luke’s sacrifice would have really sold things to the audience.

(And just as an aside, I know SW plays fast & loose with time & distance and all that, but it never struck me as realistic to think nobody showed up to Crait just because they were afraid of the First Order. Considering how close Kylo & Co were to Crait, the window of opportunity for someone to come to Leia’s aid before their attack, from getting a distress call completely out of the blue, was pretty small, putting it charitably.)

So, what if the ghosts fade in from red to purple but at full opacity they’re blue?

As long as you aim for moving them away from the straight red of the surroundings to show they’re actually there, so to speak, and don’t go to far afield from the effect of jonh’s bluish-on-blue from the original Exogol coloring (which it sounds like you’re doing), that should be fine.

I’m leaning more towards Ed Slushie’s point and would go pale blue, unless it looks super weird.

I remembered there was a cool red light effect on Yoda and Ben Kenobi in ESB where Luke takes off from Dagobah and thought that might give us an in-canon example. But Ben vanishes before the red light covers that area, even though he’s still talking to Yoda, so looks like Lucas didn’t know what to do either 😃 Ben was shown at full brightness when his surroundings were dark, tho, so having the Force ghosts be somewhat independently lit/colored from their surroundings feels like a reasonable avenue to go in.

I kind of don’t want a full shot of the Dreadnought and to save the ‘reveal’ for TLJ

You could crop out the right side of that arrival shot. Depending on how tight you do it, you could have a smallish Destroyer on screen in the upper left corner and then see a chunk of huge ship just pop into frame. Then it pans down to the (left) cannon dropping into firing position. Nice it have in one shot.

Cropping it (and maybe horizontally flipping it as well) saves the wide shot original for TLJ. Here you can see it’s something big, but you don’t get HOW big.

Plus it takes care of your ‘rings of DQar’ problem too.

Just a thought!

INITIAL POST (JULY 2022 VERSION)

After being a SW fanedit follower for years and a lurker here on & off almost as long, I’ve decided to pull the trigger and make one of my own!

The approach I’ve settled on takes inspiration primarily from THE BLACKENED MANTLE prequel 3-in-1 edit that used a less straightforward editing approach with a Japanese dub & re-written (sometimes drastically) subtitles to recontextualize existing footage in meaningful ways.

Also in the mix for this is:

  • The b&w FLASH GORDON adventure serials,

  • THE HIDDEN FORTRESS and other chanbara films,

  • “The Machete Order”, and oddly enough

  • ROBOTECH.

Put all that in a pot to stew and you end up with a Japanese-dubbed, English-subtitled saga spanning all three Skywalker eras.

OUTPUT:
One constant for this project has been frequently reevaluating the shape of the end product. Originally it was going to be seasons of a chapter-based serial. Then, since I figured folks would just wait for the whole thing to be released to watch it anyway, I decided to just skip to traditional films. I strongly wanted it to be B&W, but I kept realizing I missed color too much. So many choices! And when you put this much work into a project, the last thing you want (or at least I want) is to have a list of “should’ve dones” when it’s finished. Finally I realized that a lot of this work won’t translate as well in full-color because the changes in grading between the films is SO much more jarring in color than B&W.

So here’s how I’m looking to release the story:

  • Seven individual films with internal chapter breaks

  • One serial with seven seasons of roughly 5 episodes each

  • The content difference between the two (other than aesthetics) should be minor.

OVERALL GOALS:
This project is trying to feed a few different birds with one scone:

  • Help me get more comfortable and fluent in Adobe Premiere.

  • See if I can solve some narrative challenges with making X amount of footage accomplish Y objective.

  • Make something as expansive yet self-contained as possible for my partner to watch & enjoy.

  • Put something out there that’s a little bit different.

  • Hopefully interact, collaborate, & learn from the super-talented folks on OT.

  • Not kill myself in the process!

STORY ORDER:
I will be using material from all 11 films to craft a story roughly broken into the following sections:

  • I - Rebel Dawn
    ANH with few changes.

  • II - An Empire’s Fury
    ESB with even fewer changes.

  • III - The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker
TPM/AOTC/ROTS heavily edited following Darth Lunar’s THE BLACKENED MANTLE

  • IV - Destiny of the Jedi
ROTJ and SOLO heavily edited following Spence’s cut of the former >>

  • V - The New Order

  • VI - Forces and Counter Forces

  • VII - The Last Battle
TFA/TLJ/TROS/RONE chopped up and reassembled into these three films a la THE BLACKENED MANTLE.

WHY THE WHOLE SAGA?
It’s all Mon Mothma’s fault, really.

I wanted to use R1 footage in the ST era and while I could make everything else I wanted basically work, I kept tripping over her looking exactly the same in her single ROTJ scene an acknowledged 30 years earlier. How do I fix that? I make a canonical ROTJ without her in that scene.

And then the floodgates opened…

CRAWL?/NO CRAWL?
Each serial chapter will open with a brief text piece bringing viewers up to speed for that episode.

Each film will have… something.

RELEASE:
Films first, then serial.

FORMAT:
Aiming for 1080p 5.1 Japanese AC3 mkv file.

SOURCES:
The starting point for all of these edits are the R2 blu-rays & their 5.1 AC3 Japanese audio output. Where needed and as they become available, I will use Adywan’s REVISITED releases w/ JPN 5.1 audio sync.

CONTINUITY:
I’m approaching this whole endeavor with a kind of ROBOTECH mindset: taking separate stories that share a lot of elements and rearranging them with some rewriting and changing context into something new.

I just ask that viewers take into account what I actually show or don’t show on screen when judging whether or not I’m making a continuity error.

For example - I consider having Jimmy Smits from R1 interacting with Carrie Fisher from TLJ as fine, as long as I don’t specifically identify him onscreen as her adopted father Bail Organa and just have him as a fellow Senator or some random dude in a cape.

CHANGES:

Without getting into specifics yet, I’ll throw out these random opinions I’m carrying into the start of this project as clues:

  • Building a nearly complete second Death Star in a few years when it took you almost 20 to build the first one makes no sense.
Repairing a damaged Death Star, on the other hand…

  • Between Leia, Rey, Jyn, Holdo, and the rest, it seems to me that women have to do the heavy lifting fixing the galaxy after the Battle of Endor.

  • The galaxy is a BIG place. Lots of people and planets and infrastructure and material that don’t immediately disappear because something bad happened in one spot on one end of it.

  • It’s much easier to use old things already on hand while you slowly make and replace them with new things than wait until you have everything you need all shiny & new.

  • From a certain point of view, you could tell someone Kylo Ren betrayed & murdered Ben Solo, if you felt guilty about your part in Ben turning to the dark side.

  • Rey & Jyn could almost be sisters.

  • What the hell was that blue energy shooting out of the shaft Palpatine took a header down? The stuff that washed completely over Vader & Vader’s helmet that wasn’t vaporized in the Death Star explosion?

  • Being referenced on screen is almost as good as being seen on screen.

  • Greedo never gets to shoot, just like Jabba never goes to Mos Eisley.

  • The Executor is always ready for Vader’s arrival.

  • I really wish there was a scene of Leia in the Senate.

HELP WANTED:
I’ve already incorporated a ton of ideas directly or indirectly from other fanedits, so you’ve all already been a huge help. (I’m thinking of having a text commentary track just to help point out in real-time where certain ideas or bits came from, in addition to listing names in the credits)

But I will more than likely be reaching out for feedback, tips, and possibly some FX/audio work as things progress. As much as I’m using this as a personal teaching opportunity, I’d be a Jabba-sized fool if I didn’t take advantage of the talent here!

Thanks for stopping by!

JUNE 2022 PROJECT UPDATE

I’m holding myself to a very soft July 1 deadline for putting out THE NEW ORDER’S workprint.

  • The only real FX work is the basic masking of the Tarkin scene mentioned above, which is 6 shots I’m about 20% thru right now. (And let me take this opportunity to again say how bullshit rotoscoping is. Every time I feel like I had a good run of adjusting keyframes on a mask, I play it through and realize I forget a whole section of the shape for half the runtime…)
  • The next heaviest load is making or setting audio for 3 scenes I’ve rewritten dialogue subtitles for. Part of that is manipulating audio from named characters (Galen in one scene & Maz in another), while the other is an extended version of the “droid stole a freighter” scene from TFA with different context. That should be easier if I can squeeze out audio from an online translator service. Fingers crossed.
  • Last is a general cleanup pass for subtitles, title cards, jump cuts, bad audio fades, etc.

So fingers crossed for July 1 (or thereabouts) for a release of THE NEW ORDER’S workprint!

JUNE 2021 PROJECT UPDATE

Work has continued full steam. With a project of this scope, I’ve found myself bouncing around the timeline a bit, but mostly focusing on the Sequel Era chapters as they require the most reconfiguring with the combination of RONE, TFA, TLJ, and TROS into one narrative.

Right now I have the Sequel Era breaking into roughly 15 chapters (or three ‘films’ of roughly 2hrs each). A few chapters are straight uninterrupted chunks of one movie, but most mix & match a little bit. The first chapter, for instance, pulls footage from ROTJ, RONE, TFA, TPM, and an AOTC deleted scene, so you can see how things can get tricky.

My July goal is to get the workprint of that first 2hr film done & available for review. I’d say it’s ~80% there now; the big tasks left are another subtitle editing pass and audio transition fixing. So I think July is a reasonable goal.

And I’d put the rest of the Sequel Era footage at about ~60% ready. The assembly is there but all the above work needs doing plus some extra narrative stitching needs attention (like having Poe at the Battle of Scarif…whuh?).

And I ordered a copy of the LEGO STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS PS3 game in Japanese to hopefully get some rips of isolated Sequel Era SFX & dialogue, especially from processed voices like Kylo or Snoke. Because again why the hell not, at this point?

MAY 2021 PROJECT UPDATE

(End of) April Mini-Update!

Wanted to hold off until I had a video to show, and I am close on that, but I also didn’t want to get into May without giving an update. So while some of this is already integrated into the first post, here’s what’s happened since the last update:

  • I’ve expanded the story scope from ‘just’ the Sequel Trilogy to the entire Saga (including SOLO, which I wasn’t originally planning to do). So looking at around 40ish chapters instead of around 15.

  • REALLY kicked the tires of Premiere Pro to figure out workflow & best practices for things like captions & proxies & color grading & organization & exporting & future-proofing & VFX work and more thru a ton of trial & error.

  • Got R2 blurays with appropriate audio for all Saga films.

  • LOTS of YouTube tutorial watching.

  • Remapped the entire story (see OP), most notably having RONE footage take place parallel with the Sequel Trilogy material instead of between the Prequels and the OT. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but I’m finding its cinema style syncs up with the Sequels so much better than ANH that you can buy it being part of that era easier.

So what’s the plan now?

My next goal for May is to get the first chapter of the Sequel era out as a workprint. Clocking in right now at around 30 min, it so far pulls footage from RONE, TROS, TFA, and TPM, so it should be a pretty good barometer for seeing how stuff originally from different eras can work in different contexts.

How close to final will that be? I’m guessing there will still be audio work to finish and placeholder cards for a VFX shot or two, but the pacing, grading, and re-captioning will be done.

I wasn’t exactly planning on releasing something today, but when I noticed how close I was to finishing off the intro test I’d mocked up from an idea Eyepainter reminded me of, I figured it was worth burning a little midnight oil to get something out on this particular date.

So with that said, here’s a link to a Proof of Concept workprint of Chapter 1’s first sequence (with intro & prologue):

https://vimeo.com/545276729

I ended up doing more of a dialogue pass than I thought, even on lines I wanted to keep, to get the subtitle readability & timing to a comfortable speed.

JAN 2021 PROJECT UPDATE

Since my first post I’ve been able to acquire Japanese blu-rays of Eps VII to IX, so I’ve decided to mash the silent film and BLACKENED MANTLE approaches together and do my edit of these three films as a (roughly) 15-chapter B&W Japanese dubbed & English subtitled adventure serial a la FLASH GORDON. Each chapter will have its own prologue recap, although I won’t be using a traditional crawl.

I’ve almost finished the first chapter already, so will hopefully have some test or workprint vids up soon…

ORIGINAL DEC 2020 POST

I’ve been a SW fanedit follower for years and a lurker here on & off almost as long, so I guess it was about time I pulled the trigger and made one of my own! I talked about it and SW fanedits in general terms a few weeks ago on an episode of FORCE GHOST COAST-TO-COAST (http://www.multiversitycomics.com/podcasts/force-ghost-coast-to-coast-season-iii-episode-xliv-fan-edits-ashes-of-the-empire/), but now that I’ve actually started working on it in earnest I can get more specific:

OVERALL GOALS: This project is trying to feed a few different birds with one scone -

  • Help me get more comfortable and fluent in Adobe Premiere.
  • See if I can solve some narrative challenges with making X amount of footage accomplish Y objective.
  • Use new subtitling along with video edits to make story adjustments.
  • Put something out that’s a little bit different.
  • Hopefully interact, collaborate, & learn from the super-talented folks on OT.
  • Not kill myself in the process!

I’ve been looking for a project to help me get some Adobe Premiere time-on-task, and a SW fanedit sure seemed like a fun way to do that.

I was really impressed with the way THE BLACKENED MANTLE used subtitles to (in some cases drastically) recontextualize existing footage in meaningful ways, and wanted the same kind of leeway in planning my edit. I went back & forth on whether or not to go full TBM and use a different dub for audio, but I think a music-only ‘silent’ film is both aesthetically cool and hopefully saves me a headache or two!

(I’d actually forgotten about the music-only version of THE LAST JEDI until after I’d made the decision to go that route!)

I might do an ‘old timey’ version later on, but for now this the THX version of a silent movie: 1080p widescreen HD full-color!

CHANGES: I don’t want to give everything away, plus its still VERY early in the process, so I’ll just throw out SOME of the big beats in no particular order for now and update as things progress -

Han lives! While I thought him dying in TFA was handled pretty well, I thought him surviving (props to THE FORD AWAKENS) was a cool enough WTF idea that it got the brain-wheels turning. Why isn’t he in the rest of the movie or the other films? If he is, where does that footage come from? How involved can you make him?

They’re not really rebels! This is probably semantics, but it just irks me that Leia’s group are called the Resistance when, in fact, it’s the First Order that’s resisting against the New Republic regime. I know why it makes metatextual sense to give them that name, and I read some Wookiepedia entry with a canonical explanation I can buy, but the films themselves don’t give enough context for that or a few other related things. So for the purposes of this fanedit:

  • The Resistance are referred to as the Republic where possible.
  • The First Order is still The First Order but it’s more explicit that they are Imperial remnants.
  • Starkiller Base is now Tarkin Base because: (1) it kills planets, not stars; (2) I know it kills stars to power the gun, but that’s more like eating stars and it’s not called Stareater Base; (3) ex-Imperials would name a base after one of their former generals.

Not everything is about Luke Skywalker! TFA’s opening crawl reads like the First Order was waiting for Luke to disappear before coming out of hiding, and ONLY Luke can put that genie back in the bottle. The map-guffin is, of course, a map to Luke. I like Luke as much or more than I like Han, but putting all this narrative pressure on him right up front seems to take away from what Leia and the Republic. could and should be trying to accomplish instead of hoping Luke can bail them out. So for the purposes of this fanedit:

Max von Sydow is a First Order defector instead of a Jedi archeologist. The flashdrive doesn’t have the map to Luke on it, but rather 3 pieces of info:

  • The location of Tarkin Base (since it can fire through hyperspace, it can fire from anywhere)
  • The existence of the SD fleet (not nearly as big and not Sith-provided; old stockpile of automated ships run with skeleton crews)
  • Confirmation of Snoke and Kylo Ren as Force users

Why is the last bit important?

Han/Leia don’t know Kylo = Ben! When the Knights of Ren burned down the Jedi academy and killed students, Leia & Han assumed Ben was one of the dead/missing. Luke was so distraught over his actions that he didn’t correct them; better to let them think a rogue element like Kylo killed him than Luke’s own actions turning him dark. That shame compounds things until Luke disappears. So in another instance of Star Wars rhyming poetry, Leia/Han get the truth of a family member being betrayed & murdered “from a certain point of view”.

Finding out the First Order has at least two high-level Force users in their ranks forces Leia to put the past behind her and reach out to Luke.

RUNTIME: I was originally going to post this as just a 3-in-1 edit attempt but the more I play around with things, I see ways to do this story as a single film, a duology, or a trilogy.

Right now my ‘assembly’ cut is running close to 4 hours, so the duology might be the optimal fighting weight for this project, but I know I can do a trilogy and am really curious to see what a 1-film version would look like!

HELP WANTED: I’ve already incorporated ideas from other fanedits into the plan (like moving the destruction of Hosnian Prime later in the story) so you’ve all already been a huge help. But I will more than likely be reaching out for feedback, tips, and possibly some FX/audio work as things progress. As much as I’m using this as a personal teaching opportunity, I’d be a Jabba-sized fool if I didn’t take advantage of the talent here!

Thanks!

Yeah, now that you mention it, I think we probably have seen Connix on D’Qar by this point.

The caption was thrown in to remind myself what she would be saying since I’d probably be using this is a silent film or foreign dub edit. The footage is pulled from midway thru TLJ - they’ve lost the medical frigate & Connix is informing Holdo they only have six hours of fuel left.

I went up & down on the amount of face-time to give the officers, erring on the side of more since we will come back to them soon-ish. I also liked the idea of Holdo staring down the incoming blast in defiance as long as possible, and wanted to see if I could make the timing work with just the color change.

Fun little exercise!

Hosnian Destruction
It might be going too far to show Holdo staring out of the window at the approaching lasers, but even placing the TLJ ships in the distance going to hyperspace in this shot would help.

If we see Holdo in this sequence, then the only dialogue necessary for the previous scene would be ‘General, the Republic is scrambling the fleet to assist us’.

Not sure if you ever got around to doing this, but I banged out a mockup of this idea tonight using the HAL9000 Hosnian destruction sequence as a base.

Wasn’t until rereading the post just now that I realized I explicitly have Holdo looking out the window at an approaching laser (!) but I think it still works 😃

On a different note, while I never cared much for the Mary Sue accusations levied against Rey, there is actually one instance in TFA where I think it’s true, and that’s her breaking herself out of prison with a Jedi mind trick. Is there a way to make Han, Finn, and Chewy responsible for her escape? Maybe Phasma orders Rey be brought to her at gunpoint?

I always figured it was ok because (1) Ren had just told Snoke she, tho untrained, was powerful in the Force, and (2) he had JUST tried to do something like that to her.

In TLJ she described the Force specifically as a power Jedi had to control people, so maybe she already had heard enough rumors of the Jedi mind tricks by this point to realize if she had the Force, she could do that too.

Not sure how we could imply it, but I think it would be cool if we could explain that the reason the Sith Fleet needs to be controlled by some kind of tower is because all of those ships are completely empty, and they need to be remotely controlled. Maybe we could redub that dumb line about harvesting the galaxy’s young to man the fleet. How are babies gonna man the fleet you are launching in less than 16 hours? Maybe we could redub him to say, “We’ll need to install a comm tower onto this ship to control the fleet remotely.”

Certainly not the easiest way to go, but you might be able to change the long tracking shot looking out from inside one of the Exegol SDs as Rey is flying in to confront Palpatine. Grab a chunk of the second half (1:37:20 to end, say), preferably with the least amount of people in it, crop/mask out/avoid them as much as possible,

I wouldn’t want to try that, but there are some pretty talented folks on this board with way better skills & patience than me.

Star Wars: Serialized (WiP)
Time

(RELEASE STATUS DETAILS, VIDEO CLIPS, AND PRIOR UPDATES AVAILABLE IN THE SECOND THREAD POST)

After being a SW fanedit follower for years and a lurker here on & off almost as long, I’ve decided to pull the trigger and make one of my own! And by one, I mean the entire 11-film Skywalker saga reworked as a cliffhanger adventure serial delivered very much in the vein of the 1930’s FLASH GORDON adventures George Lucas was aiming to evoke with his galaxy far, far away.

As folks who have followed this thread over the years(!) have already discovered, while that basic idea has never changed, the way that idea will be delivered has been a moving target for me. Episodic chapters, full-length edits, black & white, color, foreign language dubs… I’ve been very open to exploring different avenues when it comes to getting this idea out there in the best and most flexible way possible.

The TL;DR of this is that right now, I’m looking at releasing this material as roughly 35 black & white serialized chapters (each with their own intro/prologue/outro) grouped into 7 seasons, with each season also getting a companion feature-length combination edit of the material.

And I expect there will be multiple iterations of these releases as new/updated material becomes available. I will keep the second thread post updated with the latest version numbers available.

OVERALL GOALS

This project is trying to feed a few different birds with one scone:

  • Help me get more comfortable and fluent in Adobe Premiere.

  • See if I can solve some narrative challenges with making X amount of footage accomplish Y objective.

  • Make something as expansive yet self-contained as possible for my partner to watch & enjoy.

  • Put something out there that’s a little bit different.

  • Hopefully interact, collaborate, & learn from the super-talented folks on OT.com.

  • Not kill myself in the process!

STORY ORDER

I will be using material from all 11 films to craft a story roughly broken into the following sections:

  • I - Rebel Dawn
    ANH with few changes.

  • II - Dark Lord’s Fury
    ESB with few changes.

  • III - The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker
TPM/AOTC/ROTS heavily edited following Darth Lunar’s THE BLACKENED MANTLE.

  • IV - Prophecy and Destiny
ROTJ and SOLO heavily edited following Spence’s ROTJ.

  • V - A Case For Rebellion
ANDOR Season 1 lightly edited to fit new continuity.

  • VI / VII / VIII - The New Order / Forces and Counter Forces / The Last Battle
TFA/TLJ/TROS/RONE edited and reassembled into these three films.

CONTINUITY

I’m approaching this whole endeavor (especially the later half) with a kind of ROBOTECH mindset: taking separate stories that share a lot of elements and rearranging them with some rewriting and changing context into something new.

I just ask that viewers take into account what I actually show or don’t show on screen when judging whether or not I’m making a continuity error. For example - I consider having Jimmy Smits from RONE interacting with Carrie Fisher from TLJ as fine, as long as I don’t specifically identify him onscreen as her adopted father Bail Organa and just have him as a fellow Senator or some random dude in a cape.

CHANGES

HELP WANTED

I’ve already incorporated a ton of ideas directly or indirectly from other fanedits, so you’ve all already been a huge help. (I’m thinking of having a text commentary track just to help point out in real-time where certain ideas or bits came from, in addition to listing names in the credits)

But I will more than likely be reaching out for feedback, tips, and possibly some FX/audio work as things progress. As much as I’m using this as a personal teaching opportunity, I’d be a Jabba-sized fool if I didn’t take advantage of the talent here!

Thanks for stopping by!

There is more side gun action in ESB:R

Yeah. Even in the battle of Hoth clip that we've seen, the AT-ATs use their side guns when firing on the rebel trench-line. It's probably a little tough to pick out because they're firing in addition to the main guns and all that, but they do help up the ante of Empire firepower against the Rebels.
