I just thought “A Skywalker” could be an interesting answer, because you could interpret it as Rey taking the last name, or that she is creating a new order called “Skywalker” and she is claiming that title. Maybe that would seem contradictory or redundant after Rey saying “I’m a Jedi” at the climax.

That’s something I’ve been very strongly considering for the end of my edit as what Rey & Ben call their school of Force students.

A possibility is Rey would be on Tatooine at the Skywalker homestead and like the scene above (without the ghosts; Rey is probably looking at Leia about to land on Ach-to where Ben had trashed his TIE fighter after mindwiping the First Order command staff and defecting), the old woman comes up and says the place is empty & no one stays because of raiders. Rey says she’s here to help. The old woman asks who she is, and Rey answers that she’s a skywalker.

It’s a cool word, it kinda works as a description of a Jedi-type wandering monk, and it honors the whole Skywalker lineage without having Rey kinda presumptuously adopt herself into it.

I’m rendering out the Chapter 19 (or Season 4, Chapter 1 as it’s called onscreen) workprint and will be ready to start sending out links to those interested hopefully sometime tonight.

As with all workprints, there are still things left to do. In particular for this chapter, I have two sequences (maybe 3 out of 26 minutes) without voice audio but with subtitles. I need to basically create the audio for those from scratch and while I know how I’m going to do it, I don’t want to hold up the rest of things for those parts. You can still tell what’s going on, certainly, but just know that those will be fixed soon. I’m also still experimenting with some FX tinting choices, so some of those bits may be inconsistent right now. And audio transitions/volume leveling is something I’ve been working on, so there’s probably some glitches there. And the onscreen graphics/titles are still getting tweaked on a daily basis.

whew

Other than all THAT, though, this baby is ready to go! And I’m looking forward to setting it aside and moving on to another chapter!

UPDATE It’s now uploaded!

Great stuff, love the recontextualization, how set in stone are these figurative fight sequences? I love the black and white maybe Kylo’s face could be brighter while still remaining ominous. These kind of edits excite me the most I’ve already wanted to see a silent PT and the potential of an epic 9-in-1, I would love a PM to any latest workprint when it’s ready, are the chapters going to be in sequence or will there be jumping between eras?

The rough chapter sequence is mentioned in the first post about halfway down.

There’s only really one big era jump and that’s modeled after the Machete Order idea of watching the Prequels between ESB & ROTJ. Other than that, the rest of the material basically stays in their own lanes. I don’t considered the RONE material cut with the Sequel Era stuff as era-jumping because it’s being used as contemporary, not flashbacks.

Those Force Fights aren’t going to change much other that smoothing out rough edges & such. I used Neverargreat’s Starlight edit for the interrogation room stuff and while it looks great in color, it might be too much in B&W, so I may go back to the less-dark version moving forward.

Hoping to get a Chapter 19 (1st of the Sequel Era) workprint out by end of the month.

Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve updated the top post to reflect what’s currently being worked on and what I currently need help with.

Should I export a workprint of the edit in its current state, with some placeholders for the things that still have to be done? I don’t know if there’d be any demand for that, but at least that way I figure people could see the majority of the completed project and decide if it’s something they want to lend a hand to or not.

I say sure!

And let me know what Throne Room shot you need in 4K and I’ll send it your way.

  • That said, I’m totally pro Clone-Palpatine. The real one died at the end of VI. The clone was created by him as a safety blanket (stashed secreatly on Exegol, treasured and then activated by the cultists).

Reaching back a bit for this but it syncs up with something I was just thinking about as I read this thread.

I never really had a problem with TROS Palpatine being a clone because I thought that meant it was basically a blank body with the real Palpatine’s soul (for lack of a better term) in it after it escaped destruction on the DSII in ROTJ. I figured that’s what the huge explosion/ghost smoke-wind stuff was. And so while he or his followers could keep making clone bodies for him, if you kill him before he has a chance or the strength to eject his soul, then he dies for real.

So if you can work that idea into a crawl somewhere or a ROTJ scene flash in the Kylo/Palp chat on Exegol, that might help sell the Palpa-clone idea a little more.

Good luck!

Quick-ish update:

My July goal is to get the workprint of that first 2hr film done & available for review. I’d say it’s ~80% there now; the big tasks left are another subtitle editing pass and audio transition fixing. So I think July is a reasonable goal.

Update to the update:

Getting a workprint of that first Sequel Era film done by the end of the month isn’t gonna happen. BUT I feel pretty confident I can get one for the first chapter of that material (basically the first 30min or so) by then. It’s taking me longer because that section has probably the most editing together of disparate elements per minute than the whole rest of the project. There’s also a bunch of style VFX choices I’m spending time trying here that, once solved, won’t take nearly as long moving forward.

Very interesting. I think the black and white looks pretty gorgeous.

However, if I were to be super nitpick-y… Seeing that you said you were wanting to make it look like something akin to the Flash Gordon serials or Kurosawa’s B&W films, I feel like the color grading has a bit too much contrast. It makes it look more modern B&W rather than B&W from the 30s/50s. However, if you’re happy with it, I won’t complain!

Also, are you going to add grain onto the film? I’m just curious.

If you can’t be (respectfully) nitpicky here, where can you be? 😃

I know I wanted to use B&W overall for several reasons: (1) to differentiate this from other edits in a way I still think looks cool, (2) to pay homage to the franchise’s Flash Gordon & Kurosawa roots, and definitely (3) as a way to make the use of the Force in different situations stand out in different ways, as you can see some of in that clip.

I also know that I didn’t want to make these movies look TOO different from their original incarnations. Weird coming from someone taking out all the color, I know. But in my non-professional, uneducated opinion, these were films designed to look good in contrasting colors, so I tried to retain as much of the contrast in B&W values as I could to compensate for losing the color values. Which isn’t to say the older, less contrasty B&W films don’t look good! These just looked better to me with this kind of approach.

(And BTW - the Kylo/Rey footage was extra contrasty for dramatic reasons. I kept the Rey/Luke scene in that clip specifically to show the whole movie wasn’t quite that chiaroscuro.)

It was also super important to me that whatever look I chose was as easy to apply as possible, given the amount of footage involved. I tried out some Lumetri presets and settled on this one as a good overall option. I already have WAY too many rabbit holes to avoid going down (or not) to get this project out the door – anything I can actually set & forget at this point is appreciated!

FOLLOWUP QUESTION FOR FOLKS WATCHING THE CLIP
How was the timing & readability of the subtitles?

I tried to make them conform to the Japanese audio timing a little tighter than the standard timings but still be onscreen long enough to read. Anyone have problems following along?

It’s not the full workprint video I mentioned last week, but I do have a new clip to share:

https://vimeo.com/571096628

I’m hesitant to give too much setup because this clip shows how I I’ll be using B&W, single color, and full color for different effects in the edit. I’m curious to see what you all think is going on before I tell you what I was going for.

That said, this is a Kylo/Rey scene roughly 45 minutes into the first part of the Sequel Era trilogy. I used some footage from NeverarGreat’s TFA: Starlight edit as a base for this because I dig his regrading of that particular scene.

Enjoy!

Quick-ish update:

Work has continued full steam. With a project of this scope, I’ve found myself bouncing around the timeline a bit, but mostly focusing on the Sequel Era chapters as they require the most reconfiguring with the combination of RONE, TFA, TLJ, and TROS into one narrative.

Right now I have the Sequel Era breaking into roughly 15 chapters (or three ‘films’ of roughly 2hrs each). A few chapters are straight uninterrupted chunks of one movie, but most mix & match a little bit. The first chapter, for instance, pulls footage from ROTJ, RONE, TFA, TPM, and an AOTC deleted scene, so you can see how things can get tricky.

My July goal is to get the workprint of that first 2hr film done & available for review. I’d say it’s ~80% there now; the big tasks left are another subtitle editing pass and audio transition fixing. So I think July is a reasonable goal.

And I’d put the rest of the Sequel Era footage at about ~60% ready. The assembly is there but all the above work needs doing plus some extra narrative stitching needs attention (like having Poe at the Battle of Scarif…whuh?).

And I ordered a copy of the LEGO STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS PS3 game in Japanese to hopefully get some rips of isolated Sequel Era SFX & dialogue, especially from processed voices like Kylo or Snoke. Because again why the hell not, at this point?

but as is it would mess with the pace and tension release too much

You mean provide a welcome break from the snail’s pace of the Tatooine section?

I agree putting in some kind of Luke-flying-in-Beggars-Canyon sequence could break up the slog of the Tatooine droid section. Maybe go from the Tantive IV section to Luke flying, then have that end with him flying home & have the T16 really small in the sky as you pan down to the escape pod with the droids walking away? Or move it later and have it pan down to the stormtroopers inspecting the crash site?

On the other hand, I feel that slog as is helps maintain the dynamic of the droids as the central POV characters, which makes the switch to farmboy hero’s journey a little nicer. YMMV.

I’ve been wondering about how to have an onscreen reveal of Vader learning Luke’s identity in ESB and I think it might be possible if you repurpose the Admiral Ozzel Force Choke call into one between Vader & Boba Fett.

(Since I’m using a foreign language dub for my edit I’m working without the spoken-words-matching-meaning constraint but since my plan involves two characters wearing full-face masks, I think a lot of this could still apply.)

Mockup to come, but here’s how I’d tackle it at the start of ESB:

  • Pan down on Executor and Vader in chamber as General Veers leaves and he turns to make call.
  • Tune in on Fett taking the call, as good of a straight-on head shot as possible. (If you could have him in the Slave 1 pilot seat, that would be better.)
  • Vader asks for his report.
  • Fett says he’s still looking but he has found a name for the boy: Skywalker.
  • Silent beat on Vader.
  • Fett says Vader?
  • Vader says continue your search.
  • Fett signs off As you wish. Hangs up.
  • Vader spins back around.
  • Vader walking to the bridge window.
  • Vader looks out & says Skywalker.

Along with this I would tweak the crawl to change ‘young Skywalker’ to ‘the young pilot’. And I would not have Palpatine say Skywalker’s name specifically in his Skype with Vader, so the Emperor just knows this Rebel kid is powerful & dangerous and wants Vader to kill him.

If you didn’t know Vader was Skywalker, Fett’s info could just be a shock to Vader that the Jedi he killed had a kid and his later deflection of Palpatine’s order could be read as just serving his master.

If you do know he’s Luke’s father, you get to see his shock at finding out he has a son (and that Palpatine lied to him if you’d seen ROTS) and could be seen in hindsight as the start of him hatching an actual plan to use Luke for his revenge on Palpatine.

Plus it kinda makes Fett stand out a little more as Vader’s bounty hunter of choice.

I wasn’t exactly planning on releasing something today, but when I noticed how close I was to finishing off the intro test I’d mocked up from an idea Eyepainter reminded me of, I figured it was worth burning a little midnight oil to get something out on this particular date.

So with that said, here’s a link to a Proof of Concept workprint of Chapter 1’s first sequence (with intro & prologue):

https://vimeo.com/545276729

I ended up doing more of a dialogue pass than I thought, even on lines I wanted to keep, to get the subtitle readability & timing to a comfortable speed.

Looking at this from a glance, I gotta say that this sounds cool.

Anyway, I noticed your mention about the lack of a crawl, and how you plan to go about this using text. Well, I have an idea. I’m a sucker for Seven Samurai, and I’ve always loved the opening credits and text prologue of that film combined with the thumping musical score that sets the atmosphere. I think something similar would make a perfect alternative to the opening crawl (not to mention give it more of the aesthetic that you want to acheive). I don’t know how to do it myself, but I think it would make for a nice little detail.

Thanks!

Shock of shocks, I’m also a fan of SEVEN SAMURAI and have actually been binging on the Fumio Hayasaka score all week. That intro is fantastic and something I am definitely looking to evoke/homage/crib to some degree. I think I’ve got a nice balance figured out between that aesthetic and some necessary SW features, but you’ll have to be the judge on that!
