Best and/or most user friendly Blu-Ray menu creator?
Time

Thread title says it all. I've been searching online for a Blu-Ray menu creator that doesn't have a huge learning curve and can produce excellent results. All I really need is something that can make simple chapter menus, audio selections and extras selections for. I also need something that WON'T require any transcoding to create the final BD with menus from (ie. keeping the DTS Master audio track, same video encode). Any suggestions or feedback welcome. Thanks!

Info Wanted: So how bad is the 2011 Star Wars sound mix really?
Time

I’ve read and even heard several examples of why the Star Wars DVD sound mix was pretty weak. That said, I’ve heard the 2011 mix in 6.1 and it seemed to sound OK, although I admittedly didn’t give it much scrutiny. That said, are there still any glaring issues with the most recent mix (swapped surround channels in scenes, bizarre mixing choices, weak or tinny audio) compared to the 1997 Special Edition mix? I’m really curious to find out what may have been made worse or still potentially needing fixing.

REVENGE OF THE NERDS (* unfinished project *)
Time

Even if a truly uncut HD source can't be found, the fullscreen laserdisk could still be usable mainly because the film was probably matted for 1.85:1 anyway, meaning no actual visual information would be lost from what was projected theatrically. Not too difficult to matte the material using a MeGui script. Of course, the picture quality may not be so hot, but definitely the better alternative to the jarring cut as it exists now. Also, with the Blu-Ray having a mono mix, should be pretty easy to splice in the mono laserdisk audio.

REVENGE OF THE NERDS (* unfinished project *)
Time

I'm at a loss as to why Fox decided to omit the very nice stereo remix that WAS included on the DVD release this time. Someone lost it or just not doing their homework when compiling materials? Still can't believe they'd take the scissors to this film, when very good CG alternatives are available today and at not that ridiculous a price. I wonder if the director of this film would care to find out what happened with this.

Superman II: The Final Cut & Superman II: Theatrical Cut Redux (Released)
Time

I'm done with doing any more detailed changes lists until these are ready for prime time. The Donner Cut is done and ready but I do have one little tweak I think I'm still going to attempt for the Lester version. Also, until I have disk art and blu-ray cover sleeve art I don't want to release it. Haven't had much luck finding a graphic designer to assist. Anyone can recommend anyone?

Superman II: The Final Cut & Superman II: Theatrical Cut Redux (Released)
Time

I actually did do a bit of color correction on one shot. It's a bit beyond my capabilities, so I wasn't up to the task of color correcting the whole thing. All in all, it still looks pretty nice. The Lester cut footage is a bit newer so more natural grain is retained. The Richard Donner cut, not so much. Still haven't heard from anyone about a team-up so I'll be checking on Fanedit.org in a few days. If I still hear nothing I'll likely post my version at some point. Was considering MySpleen but not sure they want massive files? We're talking about 45 gigs a piece.

Superman II: The Final Cut & Superman II: Theatrical Cut Redux (Released)
Time

At looooong last, my Superman II HD fan edit is ready for prime time! It’s taken me so long to complete this project, in fact, that I now have two different versions of the film. Each cut is presented in full 1080P HD with a DTS-HD Master Audio track on a BD-50 disk. Now on to the details.

Superman II: The Final Cut
This is essentially the Richard Donner cut, but with a bit of the Richard Lester footage added back in. I think Donner cut a bit too much of the Lester footage so I added back where it seemed appropriate. The beginning intro where the villains kill the Kryptonian guard is restored, segueing into the Donner cut revisitation of Jor-El passing judgment on them. A few snippets of slightly humorous scenes with the villains were restored such as Non trying to burn the snake, the first confrontations in East Houston, and of course, the Richard Lester memory kiss. There’s a few other minor rearrangements and additions here and there which I can detail in full at another time.

Superman II: Theatrical Cut Redux
While working on my original edit I realized the Richard Donner cut, although my preferred version of the film, had a few flaws that really nothing could be done about. One is the whole technical issue of having to use test footage for his big reveal to Lois, and another is the fact that Superman barely gets to do any heroics in it. He technically doesn’t show up until the Niagara Falls scene and then shows up in Metropolis to fight the villains near the end … and that’s about it. This version of the film has most of the original theatrical cut intro, the Paris scenes, the Lester versions of Lois jumping (into the river) and the pink bear reveal. Also, it maintains the more patriotic ending where Superman promises the president he’ll never let him down again.

Depending on whatever version you prefer, I think you’ll be pleased with my results. Also, on each disk I’ve included the original Donner and/or Lester versions of the scenes for comparison.

Technically, I could see about releasing these today. However, I’m not happy with the rudimentary menu for each version of the film I’ve created in MultiAVCHD and would like to also have created both disk art and Blu-Ray cover art. Unfortunately, I don’t have the skills to do so, so I’m putting out an open call for a partner on this project. Anyone who can do menus or create professional looking artwork for this who would be interested in helping get one fan’s definitive Superman II releases out to the fan community would be welcome to my initial project files. If any of you could even pass along the names of anyone who might be interested in teaming up with me, please pm me with any and all details.

I’m very eager to finally release this after all these years!

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

kk650, one thing you'll want to be careful of is some purple making its way into certain shadow details. The shot of Uncle Owen at the sandcrawler exemplifies that a bit. I know You_Too did an avisynth script to get rid of it back in the day. I'd check his color correction thread for more info on that one. Not sure how you may be able to address with what tools you're using.

Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation <strong>(Final Version Released!)</strong>
Time

NeveararGreat, very much looking forward to your final results on this. Hoping however it's released it will be a nice fat high-bitrate file. :) Would you consider doing your own "Partly Despecialized Version" or going Special Edition all the way? If it wasn't for the censored laser blasts, Jabba scene and Cantina alterations, the Special Edition would have been perfect in my eyes (excepting the godawful color-timing and oddball sound mix changes).

Help: looking for... 'Special Effects: Anything can Happen'
Time

I had the opportunity to see this in Omnimax at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, waaay back in '96. The redone opening was absolutely breathtaking and far better than ANYTHING the Special Editions offered up. The initial shot of Tatooine came alive with a much more vibrant starfield. There were also some visual effect "enhancements" and additions to the sound mix that really rocked. When the Star Destroyer comes across the screen while firing at the Blockade Runner there's a very massive explosion that shook the room when one of its laser bolts hit the ship, generating a circular shockwave similar to the Veridian III special effects shot from Star Trek: Generations. There were also several shots being fired back from the Blockade Runner exploding with Earth-shaking force in the back of the auditorium. Of course, when the Special Editions came out and the revised opening wasn't included, my huge letdown began...
