Info Wanted: Unaltered Star Trek TOS in HD? does an HD version of the unaltered original Star Trek series even officially exist?
Time

When I got TOS on Blu-ray, I made doubly sure my version of the disks had the seamless branching. Thankfully the Full Journey box set has that, but some of the audio was missing when I was watching season 1. Turned out it was on a channel my audio set doesn’t have. At least they kept the mono track. I just hope they’ll bring back the originals on TV at some point. I know it’s unlikely, but I can dream!

I… can’t believe Han’s gone.

If it takes place a long time ago, technically everybody is gone. I think Blue Oyster Cult has a song about this… but I know what you mean. If you leave off on a positive note, you just don’t have to think about the mortality of these characters.

True. Then there’s how Harrison wanted Han killed off in either Empire or Jedi. Guess it kind of helps to justify it that way.

A few more thoughts: I’ve noticed how this film mirrors the original - almost too much, in fact. I don’t know if this was what George’s idea was when he presented his rhyme and stanzas theory. Even the prequels were just a bit more subtle than that!

I also got the feeling that Kylo could easily blow people’s heads off in the torture chamber, kind of like a Scanner. He does look kind of like Cameron Vale. Am I the only one who sees it like that?

Also, I noticed Martha Jones was on Coruscant when they blew it up. That was pretty surprising.

I’ve just heard from a guy who made one pretty well known Star Wars fanfilm and wrote for Clone Wars and he says he just watched Despecialized with a bunch of writers from Rebels 😃

That’s really awesome, Harmy! It’s crazy to see how mainstream this project has become and how grateful people are to actually have the original trilogy in HD. Disney would have to be completely blind to not see what the public are craving.

That, or they reckon we’re doing fine for ourselves.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1

The workprint already looks good! I’ve compiled a list of things I’ve noticed based on references from doubleofive’s comparison chart.

  • 0:02:27:12 / 003540: The compositing on the TIE fighter appears to be the corrected SE one. I don’t know if you want to revert that to the original transparent form or…?
  • 0:12:23:00 / 017832: This entire sequence is a relief to see again! Noticeable gate weave though.
  • 0:14:30:11 / 020831: There’s a visible discolouring left by the subtitles. It lasts for a few frames.
  • 0:33:57:18 / 048906: This shot seems a little fuzzy. Don’t know if it was like that in theatres. Might have been.
  • 0:34:17:13 / 049381: Apparently this shot was just shades of tan, but I can see some blue sky. Is this exclusive to GOUT prints, or is the theatrical print like that?
  • 0:36:10:23 / 052103: Noticing a few vertical lines (scratches) in this shot, just at the bottom-left corner.
  • 0:36:15:10 / 052210: Possible healing error on the centre dune.
  • 0:36:17:04 / 052252: Bit dusty.
  • 0:45:05:15 / 064935: May be a 2004 recompsite: there is an odd vertical light element thru Obi-Wan’s head, which previously was a branch.
  • 0:53:10:03 / 076563: The outline between Vader and the screen is smoothed - a 1997 correction. Again, don’t know if you want to keep or change that.
  • 1:42:18:13 / 147325: 2011 R2. Presumably you already know about it, but I’m making a note of it here for completion’s sake. (also notice the colour’s a bit haywire here.)
  • 1:56:17:20 / 167468: Looks like the redone Emperor’s shaft explosion.
  • 2:04:35:13 / 179413: Noticeable gate weave for this and the next few shots.
  • 2:06:20:18 / 181938: Gate weave noticeably stops just as the end credits appear. May be able to apply the HDTV final shot here, at least to a degree.

Other than that, great job!
