Flaws, plotholes, and "could-have-been-done-betters" in the OT (alternate plot points especially welcome)

I dare say years and generations have been an issue (hah!) in SW for far longer than you claim to know.

There are more secrets written in the White Books of Magic, Palpatine, than are dreamt of in the minds of ordinary men.

Am I missing out on something here? I am not sure if I fully understand what you are saying.

And it's also never explicitly stated that meteorite impacts are common on Hoth, simply that there is a lot of meteor (not meteorite) activity in the system that confounds sensors.

If you look up the definitions of meteors, meteorites and metoroids, you will see that meteor activity takes place in the atmosphere and if the meteor doesn't burn up completely, there is also a meteorite to be found. So if there is high meteor activity, chances are high that there are meteor impacts that leave a meteorite. If it was just some rocks flying around in space, it would be called meteoroid activity.

I don't want to nitpick on these terms, but since I was very interested in astronomy as a kid, I knew these definitions so I assumed they used the term "meteor activity" according to its proper definition.

Maybe I was too quick to say it was clear that these were two different objects, but nonetheless, there is no plothole.

We see the probe droid crash. Later we see something crash. It doesn't matter if it's the same shot from a different angle. the way it was used makes it clear that it isn't a probe droid but one of the meteors they talk about. It also makes sense to show a meteor crash to establish that meteors are fairly common and nothing to be too worried about.

I see how it was originally planned to have the probe crash near Luke's position. In editing however they might have thought that this chain of events would seem too coincidental. It would be hard to belive that the probe droid didn't spot the rebels' base earlier. After all, Luke is within the range of a Tauntaun when he escapes the Wampa's cave. So what we see in the movie is this:

The probe droid crashes somewhere on the planet and slowly moves towards the rebels' base. Then there is Luke, he's fairly close to the base and spots a meteor, which he wants to investigate. He is attacked by a Wampa, rescued by Han and brought back to the base. In the meantime, the probe droid has made its way to the shield generator, where it gets detected by the rebels. Then Han shoots it.

If the rebels can spot it near the shield generator, why wouldn't they spot it, if it was that close to Luke, who is within Tauntaun range? Of course they should have thought about this during filming, but the result wouldn't look much different.

Now that you mention authorial intention, I see how flawed Empire is. The original authorial intent in Star Wars is that Vader is not Lukes father. Clearly, they have used the wrong take in Empire, or otherwise the authorial intent wouldn't be a static entity that never changes.

Seriously, the movie was cut the way it was cut. There surely was an intetion behind it, or it would have been cut differently. There can only be a plothole if the things we see contradict each other, not if they contradict an intetion that may have changed between shooting and editing.

It makes a lot of sense for the rebel fleet to get closer to the death star. It is big and slow and has to rotate to aim its superlaser. If the rebels are far away, the DS has to move only a few degrees, but if they are closer to it, it has to move more.

And a big hole in the unfinished DS doesn't really need any explanation. The emperor arranged the trap and he was convinced that the shield and the imperial fleet would prevent the rebels from getting inside. Also, since the priority was to have the superlaser operating, they probably didn't have time to install turbolasers and such.

Thanks for reminding me about the scanners, I was just typing this from my memory. Maybe the jammer was also located in the bunker. Or the jamming signal came from one of the imperial ships that were destroyed. Or the rebels' scanners were only jammed in the beginning, as soon as the DS fired its laser the big surprise succeded, no more need to keep anything secret.

Not trying to explain anything away, but I don't see any plotholes here.

- Infinite directions doesn't mean infinite useful ways to go. Hyperspace navigation isn't exactly easy.

- Just because Ackbar orders them to retreat doesn't mean that they are able to retreat.

- IIRC, Lando could detect that the shield is working as he approached the death star. During the battle the rebels get closer to it, so they are all able to notice when the shield is gone.

- We don't see the whole battle from start to end, so it's not that surprising that the ships changed their positions.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

I'd VERY much love to see Ren's crossguard be utilized for cutting opponents' hands off just as the first vid in here portrayed (at 2:47).

I didn't really like the new design, now after watching the video, I'm worried even more. This guy shows how powerful this new big lightsaber is compared to the standard weapons, so I wonder if the fighters with the normal swords have to be just as fast as in the PT to compensate for their disadvantage.

Also, it makes every Jedi without a crossguard on their sword look stupid, as if they wanted their hands to get chopped off. Even in the PT, noone has a guard, so it seems that the fighting style evolved to a point where it doesn't require crossguards. Therefore, the standard lightsabers should be just as powerful in combat as the new one.

I'm really hoping the new design is introduced in a way to make sense for the movie and the whole saga. Apart from that, I'm fairly optimistic to get at least a good movie, if not a good Star Wars movie.

I know that I'm harsh on it, but I just couldn't relate to the main characters acting foolishly. I guess I'm just not the type for supernatural mystery stuff, so I tried to rationalize what was happening and that took away the suspense.

Well, if I remember right, it was just one of the guys who was unhinged and hysterical and threw the map away in a fit of rage when he was alone, which led to the other two getting really pissed off at him. Also, as others have said, he was going a little crazy and was lost and terrified so I guess it's understandable.

Yeah, but they still had the compass, but didnt use it. A compass doesn't suddenly stop working.

I think the whole "this is totally not fake" hype prior to the movie prevented me from seeing this as "just a movie" with its own reality and logic. I can easily accept magic in Harry Potter but if a film claims to be real, I expect real world logic. And I just don't believe in witchcraft or the like, so this doesn't seem realistic to me.

Anyone who thinks The Blair Witch Project in a walkoutable movie must be crazy.

I watched it on DVD and I thought it was alright up to the point where the characters decided it would be totally ok to throw away their map and compass. I immediately lost all empathy for them.

I only wathed AOTC and ROTS at the cinema. Since I was 14 when Sith came out, I didn't question what was going on and so I liked it, or at least I told me to like it. Needless to say, I didn't walk out.

Last year was the first time I really considered to leave early. I was watching the third Hobbit movie and I was already kind of dissappointed by the plastic look, the thin story and the overinflated battle. Then the "smash the tower down to use it as bridge" scene came and Legolas stepping on falling debris was so painful to watch. But I decided to stay because I was there with some friends and the ticket wasn't exactly cheap.

So, after completing the rest of the PT I only noticed one relevant difference between the original and the dub. In Clones, the awkward "I wish I could just wish away my feelings" was altered to "I wish I could just wipe away my feelings", which is, in my eyes, still a bad line, but the best someone could have done without changing too much.

Other than that, Clones and Sith really were as bad as I expected, not seeing them wholly for some years didn't prevent me from being outraged at every character's stupid decisions.

@darklordoftech: Thanks, I made the avatar in 5 minutes using paint and google image search. I didn't even notice how well the shadows of both parts match :)

But if you like strawberry ice cream and you happen to eat a portion with rotten strawberries you know who is to blame: The one who made it.

In my analogy I established ice cream to be a film as an art and strawberry ice cream as a particular film (i.e. PT). Therefore if you don't like strawberry ice cream (i.e. the foundations of PT: storyline, character development, etc.) it really doesn't matter who makes it. In the end, a rotten strawberry or not, it will still be a strawberry ice cream.

character development in the PT? You must be trolling :D

The problem with your analogy is, that strawberry ice cream is generally liked, whereas the PT is widely seen as inferior to the OT. If you translate the PT to an ice cream flavor it would probably be cheddar cheese. There are some people who may like it, but the majority isn't exactly excited about it.

Now I want to get back on topic, so this is my last word on ice cream analogies.
