There’s a difference between presenting an innovation and using an unfinished technology in a multimillion dollar project.

Also, if you have to add “for a 16 years old [CGI] model” than it really doesn’t look that good. And TPM looks way better than AOTC.

Are we now excusing any poor decison of Lucas as being brave or innovative?

It seems to me that your distaste for the movies are keeping you beholden to the idea that innovation is only valid if it breeds perfection. But at the end of the day, that is not how innovation works, nor has it ever.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about being at least as good as the existing technology. I’m talking about objective technical benchmarks here, like resolution and dynamic range.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first time you’ve mentioned any benchmarks at all.

Listen Frank, with all due respect, it’s not gonna help your argument. I’m a cinema camera and lens technician with experience working on Aaton and Panavisiom film cameras, I am currently certified in servicing Canon, Sony, Arri, Panasonic, and Red digital cinema cameras, and if you want to get into the technical aspects of sensor benchmarks and digital standards from the late 90s to early 2000s I am more than happy to.

At the end of the day, if you’d rather not get into it, I will gladly end the debate here. But out of my own interest in the subject, I am more than happy to get into more technical aspects of the issue if you’re so inclined. Cheers.

When I say “the technology wasn’t ready” what else could I mean with that other than a purely technical comparison to analog film?

The lightning could have hit the tree even without Yoda doing anything, just by coincidence. Yoda slightly influencing the weather do do something that could have happened naturally seems very subtle and not too far fetched to me. Now, how do you imagine ghost Obi-Wan fighting against Vader or the Emperor? What could he possible do to defeat them?

Also, so far we only see force ghosts in calm and peaceful moments, not when people are busy fighting each other and not in the presence of a strong dark side user. Maybe Obi-Wan really wasn’t able to help Luke simply because Vader’s presence prevented him.

And finally, the main role of force ghosts is to guide others, not to solve problems for them. Yoda sets the tree on fire as a lesson for Luke, to set him straight, not because Yoda hates the Jedi books (they weren’t even in there and I think Yoda knew that). Similarly, what lesson would Obi-Wan teach Luke by killing Vader for him? Facing Vader is an important station on Luke’s spiritual journey and he needs to do it alone, otherwise it would be ruined. Isn’t that similar to LOTR, where Gandalf in theory is more powerful than Sauron and could easily kill him, but he rather helps the humans to overcome their struggles themselves?

I don’t care about the comfortable part that much, maybe he used digital cameras just to appear innovative and groundbreaking. My point still stands that he used it too early.

Sure, you might call it innovative and influential, but is this CGI-overloaden plastic-looking style really something to strive for? I can only applaud someone for being innovative if their innovation is actually valuable.

And again, I do acknowledge that he advanced the technology, but not that he used it that early.

I didn’t say it was easier, I said it was more comfortable for Lucas. With digital cameras, he could review any scene immediately without leaving his chair. The technical difficulties or the final result didn’t bother him too much. Sure, you can applaud him for spending all that money to further the technology, but it doesn’t change that it was too early. At least the prequels have more problems than just the look, so he didn’t ruin otherwise good movies with this decision.

You know, somehow I must have gotten cursed into to having bad experiences at the movies. I decided to to use the free ticket I got from tlj incident, and I saw “The Post”. I sat next to an asshole who didn’t think the directive to turn off your cell phone applied to him. The jerk didn’t even put it on vibrate. It rang, twice. He didn’t even turn it off or to vibrate after the first time it rang and it rang again later on in the movie. He had it in the space in the chair for drinks, where when it rang it shined it’s bright screen right in my face. I was very temped to grab the thing and break it in two. Fuck that guy.

Why didn’t you just take the phone and shove it up his ass?

tempting, but I was afraid someone would call the cops and I’d get arrested for assault and battery.

Well, couldn’t you remove the battery first?

One of the biggest things that made the prequels so innovative, wasn’t just the use of digital cameras or the amount of CGI or the use of Non-linear editing, etc. It was the COMBINATION of all of these things. Yes, eventually we would have gotten to where we are now. But the sheer amount of advancement in all of these technologies for one film (specifically Ep.2) brought about a good 15 years of advancement in a matter of 3-6 years.

This is all fine and well, but when we talk about “starting a trend”, I think about “inspiring someone else”, not just “providing the technology”.

It says “origin point”. If the planet consumes its star for firing, there needs to be a way to relocate the planet. Otherwise, the First Order spent an immeasurable amount of money and labour on a weapon that can fire only once. This clearly isn’t the case, as the weapon prepares to attack the Resistance base after the attack on the Republic. If we assume that they also tested the weapon sometime before the initial attack, the planet isn’t at it’s origin point anymore, when we see it for the first time.

Just like digital photo cameras, digital film cameras are much more convenient. It’s easy to assume that they would have been adapted eventually, if they perform just as well as analog cameras. I don’t deny that Lucas probably recognized the potential and wanted to advance the technology. However, he definitely used it too early. He was more concerned with being comfortable while making the movie than with the final product. The reason more and more directors started to film digitally after Lucas was simply the advancement of the technology itself, not because they liked the look of Episode 2.

The Ring Theory looks for things that are vaguely similar and tries to describe them in the most crude way, leaving out important details, to make two very different scenes look alike, and putting importance on small details that are smimilar, but insignificant in the movies itself. This rehash argument is just the Ring theory with a twist. Instead of using these constructed superficial “similarities” to show how great the prequels are, they are now a sign of how bad the new movies are. Why can’t angry fans come up with something new? Do they want to alienate other fans? Is Disney paying them as part of their great plan to soft-reboot the whole world?

That’s the one I’m using. The only downside is that it only supports sample rates of 48 kHz and 96 kHz, but not the CD standard of 44.1 kHz, so if you want to circumvent Windows’ audio processing, you need a way to resample ripped CDs. But in that price segment, I don’t think many USB sound cards support multiple sample rates.

Because either Rey’s parents were on that departing ship or they’re dead and buried on Jakku. It can’t be both.
And Kylo can’t be trusted.

I already asked this, but are we really sure we see Rey’s parents leave in that ship? Maybe it was just a random ship and Rey imagined her parents were in there, because that would make it easier for her.

Given Rey’s response to Ben, it’s clear that Rey has maintained a myth about her parents in her mind. Why can’t she have manufactured a memory? Not that unrealistic. Indeed, there are still Star Wars fans who maintain that Luke’s first go at the grappling hook missed when SW first hit theaters.

But doesn’t the vision show things that actually happened? I mean, besides Rey being at Cloud City and elsewhere, and besides Kylo Ren having his mask on during the forest battle, and besides Rey’s parents ship flying into the Starkiller Base sucking up the sun.

I know you’re not being totally serious, but the ship flying away and Rey crying could be real. It might have been a real ship and Rey cried because she really believed her parents were on it. Maybe that was the point where she started to invent these memories.

Well, how else would a ground assault look like? Walkers have been established as an effective force, if they came up with somehting new, people would ask “where are the walkers?”. Also, trenches are a very common defense against ground attacks and if there wasn’t a rebel base, what else would be the target of a ground attack? And the planet is nothing like Hoth.

I also must have missed the scene in Empire, where the Empire blasts a huge door away, or the TIE fighters joinging the ground attack or where Han flies directly at the enemy force to sacrifize himself, or Luke facing Vader to buy his friends some time.
