Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971

The MGM HD transfer of OHMSS is actually free of many of the Blu-ray’s issues, thank goodness… I don’t know where they’ve been hiding it, but it very clearly is NOT the Lowry transfer. Anyone who knows and loves the film would notice this immediately. I’m just thrilled it finally surfaced. It just needs color correction, but that’s pretty much it. There are a few specs and nicks on it but overall it is a beautiful HD broadcast.

Side note: MGM HD Channel is airing On Her Majesty’s Secret Service this month… here’s what’s interesting though… It’s not the Lowry master they are using. There’s a small amount of dirt on the transfer and the opening credit sequence is NOT window boxed. I’ve never seen this print shown anywhere except MGM HD. Most importantly, the contrast isn’t blown out like the Blu-ray. The whites are not clipping and hot on this broadcast, so it can be adjusted for color, cleaned slightly and preserved. The Blu-ray is useless cuz it’s blown out. The colors should be corrected to look like the original DVD from way back…

So if this broadcast can be used as a basis… one hell of an OHMSS preservation is possible.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Yes, I still have a copy of v2.1… I remember the Ben Kenobi desert scenes were adjusted because they had been a little blown out to look like the IB Tech print from that theater screening and then Harmy sort of dialed that back to look less so. That’s around the time the whole '70s look was coming into the presentation…

That gives you an idea of what direction the colors were going toward at that time, but many changes to the overall palette and timing have come into play since.

The AVCHD versions fit nicely on a dual layer DVD (use Verbatim) and they are in beautiful HD. They clock in at just over 8 gigs. I’ve played them on various displays through several different blu-ray players and never had a problem. They are pristine and never fail to impress. A large MKV is very nice but by no means the only way to watch Harmy’s work.
