The Hardy Men.  Based off of The Hardy Boys, only they've grown up and had a falling-out.  Dear old dad dies, and it's a comedy.  Go Hollywood... NOT!  I'd love a serious Hardy Boys movie based on one or two of the original books.

As soon as I saw this post, I was thinking it must be a Will Ferrell project. So it's Ben Stiller, close enough.  I was a big fan of the old 70's show, and remember watching it right before Battlestar Galactica on Sunday Nights.

Blu Ray movies NOT worth buying

If you're even a slight fan of the Godfather films, buy the Blu-Ray set.  You will not regret it.

On this title, I sure will take your word and those screen shots as evidence in this set's favor.  There are a few used sets listed for just under $30 on Amazon, and I just might go for it.  I have been having rather good luck and saving sometimes over 40% to 60% on normal MSRP, by buying slightly used things from the better rated sellers on Amazon.  But there is a risk on getting damaged goods (beyond the description provided by the seller), or not getting anything at all.

Blu Ray movies NOT worth buying
Time

I think that it is a great idea that you started up this thread. Like many other people, the poor economy has kicked me in the ass. For that reason, I have severely reduced my spending on movies, books, and collectibles. My Blu ray player was my last big purchase. So staying away from crap transfers is something we may all want a heads up on.  Boy, times have changed for me.  If a film looks like crap, I would not even want to pay $10 for it at this time.  And, this is comming from a guy who owns at least four versions of shit films like "Highlander 2" and three versions of "Highlander 3"....  This curtailing of my entertainment related buying habits is very displeasing, and quite uncharacteristic.

So far, I only own 5 Blu ray titles. Baraka, Blade Runner (5 disk set) , The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Thunderball.

The only one of them that I have seen on other formats is "Thunderball", and it looks great on Blu ray!  I've heard mixed reviews on some of the other Bond titles, and I will not be buying every film in that series (yet once again) on Blu ray format. I'll just be getting my personal favorite films that have positive fan reviews on the visual aspects.

Unlike most people, I deplore renting movies. I feel that it is somhow a huge waste of cash, and would rather shell out a few more bucks to own the thing.  Also, I have an enormous problem with not returning over-due movies, and in the past have racked up late fee totals that rival the national debt. I also suspect, that I am banned from borrowing from public libraries in at least seven communities across the United States. *wink*

It's been real hard, but I'm holding off on the new "Godfather" set. Surprisingly, I have seen enough negitive comments about the restoration and transfer to make me actualy give in and consider first renting the films. For some of the high priced titles, I can see a sort of logic in first renting the Blu ray version, and then comparing them to my standard DVDs at home.

Blade Runner Workprint question
Time

I don't see the shadow bars on these shots, but they are not the best....

These are from a review of the HD & BR sets.

From: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews34/blade_runner_HD_Blu-ray.htm

Noise evident

Disc 5 - is the "Workprint"  IN HD (1080 - VC-1 encode) is a kind of initial test-run treatise. It has a 45 second intro by Scott and a full commentary by Paul M. Sammon (author of   Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner").

It represents a rare version of the film considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending," altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more. It looks weak and as reported by Scott's intro is the lesser of the 4 versions available in this package, although it has had some 'restoration'.

NOTE: It has only 34 chapters (instead of 36) and is about 2.25:1 aspect ratio (where the others are 2.4).

Batman III Nolan's vision of Batman was only good with Heath Ledger. So Heath is dead and therefore he should not make any more.

I can't help but see this statement as really freakin' weird, considering Heath Ledger was only in one out of the two Nolan Batman films. Seems odd to say that the series is no good without him and ought to die with him, when it didn't even start with him in the first place. Would you really want three Batman films featuring the Joker

I really think the Heath Ledger thing is a bunch of bullshit anyway. Sure, he had an interesting take on the Joker, but it was way too over hyped. Might have been impressed with it if we hadn't all been bombarded with half orgasmic news stories about how brilliant Ledger's Joker was for months after his death. By the time I did actually see his preformance in the movie, I didn't find it quite as brilliant as it was hyped to be, and the fact that the movie was pretty uneven and at some points nonsensical really didn't help impress me much. I think most people just found it orgasmically amazing, because the idea that it was orgasmically amazing was shoved down all of our throats literally for months before the films release.

Since The Dark Knight ended on a really weak cliff hanger, I think a trilogy might not be a bad idea, just to finish off the story and recover for the dip it took with DK. But I definitely don't think we need more than that.

I also think a 3rd film is the best idea just to get this version of Batman into the bat cave, and into a kind of format that would work if the series was handed over to a new team (not re-booted}. But only if they plan to do a series of stories with an older Batman (and 12 year old Robin) a few years down the road from this one.

BANNED BOND: The Criterion Collection on DVD (Released)

I think I need to get off my ass and make a torrent of just the audio tracks.

Actually, you might not need to. Listentoamovie still has them all up, amazingly--and this is a site that deals with the studios in a major way, going so far as to sell the officially released DVDs, including the current editions of the Bond DVDs and Blu-Rays. So it kind of looks like we've got a pretty legitimate source for the audio. However, it's streaming-only, and I don't know jack about ripping off streams, so unless someone else does, I'll just use Audacity and go the long way.

Don't forget there is also a Music/sound effects only audio track as well as the commentary.  The Criterion disks only had the Music/Effects Only track included on the "Dr. No" and "Gloldfinger" films, but when I put together the banned bond disks, I included the "From Russia with Love" Music/Effects track that was only included in MGM video "The Connery Collection Vol. One" Laserdisk set.

Blade Runner Workprint question
Time

From Brendan Fankboner's original workprint companion

As you can see, this version is the most "radically different" edition of Blade Runner, as compared to other cuts. Other differences are that, after 1982, the only version to exist of this print is a 70 millimeter blow-up, in six-track Dolby Stereo. The blow-up process clips six percent off of the edges, as compared to 35 millimeter anamorphic prints. However, the six-track sound mix separates the bass and music from the dialogue and sound effects, to hold their own independence within the sound mix. Vangelis’ music has an aural, enveloping quality to it in this print, despite the rough qualities of the mix. In 1990 and 1991, some Landmark theaters in the Los Angeles area played this version as an anamorphic, 35 millimeter reduction print from the 70 millimeter blow-up. The print was reported to be of poor quality: grainy, non-color-corrected, and with "wobbly", hastily cut-in end credits (which also showed up in the " Director’s Cut"). A new, final credit was added to the 35 millimeter reduction: This version copyright 1991 The Blade Runner Partnership. The 70 millimeter blow-up resurfaced, briefly, and by mistake, at the Landmark Egyptian theater in Seattle during late January of 1999. It has also been reported as surfacing, again, in the Los Angeles area, in 1999. Let’s hope that the next time this rougher, but yet exciting, cut of Blade Runner makes it’s appearance, it is as an official video release!

V the tv series remake
Time

O.K., I just saw the preview, and I am with the camp that gets a bad feeling about this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoSCEMzJYE

The leaded of the Aliens named Anna (played by Morena Baccarin), looks and sounds almost exactly like Elizabeth Gracen from "Highlander: The Series".

The human resistance starts calling the alien visitors "The V's"?  How stupid!  I don't know how an actor could say that with a straight face.

And how can an action series cast The Queen of Valium;  Elizabeth (Ho-Hum) Mitchell?

When Worlds Collide

Logan's Run

The novel of the latter has an epic scale to it, one that I'd love to see translated to the big screen (rather than confined to a couple of cheesy domes outside of a junglefied Washington, DC).  The former is the great-granddaddy of Armageddon and Deep Impact, but is so hopelessly dated (effects- and science-wise) that it almost screams to be remade.

I think they are in pre-production on a re-make of "Logan's Run" at this time.

"When Worlds Collide" is an excellent choice for a re-make.  With all the conspiracy rumor talk of the arrival of planet Nibiru (planet X) in 2012, this would be an excellent time to cash in on that hype.

Hoth was cool in Empire.  The ripoff by JJ in Star Trek was not cool.

Original idea=good

copy=shit

The use of Finse Norway was also brilliant.

Today Lucas would just shoot it in an old abandoned rolls royce factory with greenscreen, and have cgi snow, lol.

I thought Nick Meyer ripped it off first in "Star Trek VI"?

J.J.'s ice planet is a copy of a copy, and that makes twice as shitty.

'Public Enemies' and Inaccurate Locations

Thank goodness F.F.C. did not film "Apocalypse Now" at Malibu Creek State Park, Los Angeles.  Then it might have looked too much like Korea, or Ape City, or Walnut Grove...

And he also used real N.Y.C. streat locations in his Godfather films.   When the film makers try to use locations that are as autentic as posible, I feel it makes the film a bit more special.  It adds a great deal of verisimilitude to the piece.
