Info: a thread for fan-made Music Videos...
Time

The internet is chocked full of fan music videos and the like, and I figured a creative place such as this, must have members that also create their own music videos. This is also a way for me to shoehorn in a music video I made.

Have you made any custom music videos? If so, post them here.

I didn’t know of a more appropriate place to post than here, so if this isn’t a good place, feel free to move it.

Here’s mine:

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I enjoyed the film quite a bit. I really loved the new characters. I was not expecting it. Finally a female jedi, and not just someone in the background who looks good with a saber. I liked all the characters, which is something that was dry in the prequels.

John Williams’ score was top notch. There’s not a lot of the “oh I remember that scene” from it, but I haven’t been listening to this soundtrack my whole life. You can definitely hear more of his 90s stylings in the score. It’s got a lot of the celesta in random parts, but I agree with Williams, it’s a beautiful sounding instrument, and doesn’t detract.

It’s a treat to see an action/adventure film with a score that isn’t all drums and orchestral hits.

I would’ve liked to have gotten a little more Max Von Sydow, as he was one of the casting choices I was most excited about.

Gwendoline Christie as Phasma was another great one. I have a feeling she will be more a thorn in the resistance’s side come next picture.

I’m still a little high off that ride to make a good enough judgement. I will say, I was ready to watch it again when it was over.

I’m just hoping they haven’t turned Luke into a celibate monk, to follow the prequel’s version of the jedi. I hope his actual personality remains intact. I don’t like the idea of him returning as Luke The White, only to act as a completely different character. Yes, he is older, but you always maintain a good chunk of your personality throughout life. I don’t like how soulless and flat the prequels made the jedi. Ben and Yoda both had wonderful personalities in the original films, yet they were concrete slabs in the prequels.

I also don’t want to hear word for word quotes from the originals, that even the prequels used. JJ pulled a lot of that shit in Star Trek. I don’t want to see a fan service, I want to see a good movie. The first 2 Star Wars films were great movies.

THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - SWESBROTJ -"remastered"(so far)+ LP's (Released)
Time

I am excited about the digital download version. I'm gonna wait until other people make the decision to buy. I just hope it's an actual audiophile release, and not a (increase the volume and the bass) that seems to be the norm in reissues.

It's ridiculous that the recordings weren't archived better. I've heard classical recordings from the 50s that sound better than the Star Wars soundtracks. I wonder if the Sail Barge music is still missing.

Angel's work has always been something I've enjoyed. I have a preference for preservation, but I absolutely love seeing what can be done to update the look of the films. I never had as much of a problem with the fact that George changed things, as I have had a problem with the poor execution as well as the choices of what was changed, and left alone. Then the fact that the originals were shit on.

Amadeus - Laserdisc+DVD Audio Tracks for 4K (formerly Theatrical Cut Restoration)

I came across the 2xLP vinyl gatefold album today, any interest, considering the discussions earlier in the thread about a high quality isolated score? My SL-1210 is in storage but perhaps else could take the album from me and do the honours...

This 2 disc 24 bit release sounds quite good to my ears. It's more complete than the original soundtrack release, but it still is missing some tracks from the More Music from Amadeus release.

Still no release has these recordings:

1. Salieri - Axur, Re d'Ormus: Act IV: Son queste le speranze

The opera that old Salieri plays on his piano, and then conducts when he reminisces. Only one non-Amadeus recording of this opera that I know of, and it was poorly recorded.

2. Mozart - Klavierstück in F-Dur, KV 33B

Song that Mozart plays blindfolded. You can find many recordings of this, but none match up with the film's timing.

3. Mozart - Die Entführung aus dem Serail - Aria: Martern aller Arten

You can find the opera in many recordings, but not the english variant used for the film. The other arias were included in the soundtrack, but not this recording.

4. Mozart - Le Nozze di Figaro - Aria: Cinque, dieci, venti....

While this wasn't included in the soundtrack, the closest version is the 80's Solti recording, as it features Samuel Ramey who sang as Figaro on the Amadeus soundtrack.

5. Mozart - Piano Concerto no. 15: Third Movement

Can find very similar recordings just about anywhere.

6. Mozart - Die Entführung aus dem Serail- Aria: Vivat Bacchus!

Played by Mozart during the masquerade party. I don't know of any recordings of it on the harpsichord or the clavichord.

7. Mozart - Die Zauberflöte - all arias

While the soundtrack features the overture and the queen of the night, the latter is in English in the film and German on the soundtracks. Then the other arias aren't even present on any soundtrack release.

I had thoughts to do an all period instruments audio edit of the film, to be more historically accurate, but I don't think it's worth the effort. It would probably be easier to do Immortal Beloved like that, since most of Beethoven's work has been given the historically informed treatment by guys like Gardiner and Immerseel. Mozart's got good releases from Immerseel, Gardiner, and Pinnock, but there's too much dialogue during the music to pull it off, and like I said before many recordings are either near impossible to find a good replacement for, or in the case of Salieri's opera, are better left alone. I do really love Sir Neville's brilliant conducting on the pieces, so I'm fine with it all. After all, the movie isn't exactly historically accurate in the first place.

EDIT

No soundtrack has the Don Giovanni overture that plays at the intro, and when Leopold is standing outside of Mozart's door. Though you can find recordings by St. Martin in the Fields many times over.

Star Wars 1992 VHS styled DVD covers
Time

I made a 92 set a few years ago, but lost them after a hard drive failure. They were on photobucket, but were removed after photobucket turned into a shit site.

Maybe somebody still has them. I spent many sleepless nights replicating the collages on the backs.

Somebody might have them still. If you have any luck finding any info on them, I'd love to get them to actually save them like I have my other sets.

Idea: Fantasia PC
Time

I grew up watching old Fleischer cartoons from the 30s and 40s, and you'd see characters like Popeye and Superman fighting really racially stereotypical characters. I saw basically every flavor of racial stereotype from as early as I can remember, but I didn't pay any attention to any of that at the time I watched it. It was re-watching them as an adult that made me see what was in the picture. Did it have any negative affects on me, as to how I see different races and cultures? Absolutely not.

The problem with censorship; you are pretending that the time the piece was created, there weren't views like that. I don't see the point in restoring a censored scene, only to change it further. In fact, I never payed any attention to the badly altered scene until it was brought to my attention when I was trying to work on my own edit of Fantasia a ways back.

The problem with Fantasia is the fact that there isn't really any true original version. That film has been hacked and re-arranged from the second it premiered. And knowing how "well" Disney preserves things, it's a wonder we even have the film in it's butchered state. If you're going to restore something, restore the audio. People are trying to hard to preserve the Fantasound, which has always sounded like shit to my ears. I'd like to hear the best possible source used, instead of these heavily scrubbed recordings that sound like a bad phaser on a guitar pedalboard.

I know for a fact that the reel to reel soundtrack from around 57 (I believe) sounds much better than any home video release in my lifetime. It's getting your hands on it at a reasonable cost and condition; that is the real struggle.

I really feel like Disney had a good idea when they made Fantasia, but the technology just wasn't there yet.

I don't know what sources Disney has at their disposal, so it's probably unfair for me to dog them, but I've just never seen all that good out of any restoration Disney has done lately.

Info: Dragon Ball Z, and the Dragon Ball series in general...
Time

Oh, there's entire forums dedicated to differing opinions of the various dubs of Dragon Ball and Z. I for one started with the Canadian dub that ran in the mid to late 90's in the US.
The voice actors were so good, but the dub was terrible. The Texas Funimation dub wasn't any better. I never could really appreciate the voice actors on the Funi dub. I think my bias is similar to the classical music community; how the first recording you hear of a certain piece of music will often be your favorite, unless you find one that is immensely better.

I've wanted to rewatch the show in japanese, but have never gotten around to it. I got burned out on DBZ pretty early in life, because we kept getting the shaft for episodes. I mean, we made it all the way until the Namek saga, and then boom, we stopped getting episodes for a while, and eventually got a new cast. I was also really mad that the ocean group didn't dub the rest of the Namek saga, and you've got a good gap of missing episodes.

I've been hearing news of the Ocean Group's own version of DBZ Kai, but it's been a few years, and I'm not hearing anything promising. Supposedly it's still on.

I heard that the end of the film is Rey bringing Luke his lightsaber on this island in Ireland where he is in exile/hiding/meditating/whatever.

There's a rumor that Luke is Rey's father and that he left her on Jakku for her protection. He should know that desert planets aren't safe havens. ;-)

Luke must have a thing for tall women.

How so, Daisy Ridley's only 5'7. Unless, I'm misunderstanding the post.

I stopped sharing music I write with other people, after a band I played with in High School. I was coming up with a pretty fun riff, that while it wasn't hard to remember, it took some skill to play right. The friggin' drummer and the bass player looked at me and said "how are we supposed to play that?" Meanwhile, we rehearsed Metallica's Fade to Black every band meeting until I couldn't stand that song again. Fade to Black was way more complex than what I presented to them.

That band recruited me, looking for a heavy metal guitarist. Shortly after I joined, they started getting influenced by Panic at the Disco, and wanted me to do the same. I eventually left and joined another metal band that actually started to get stuff done, but I ended up having to move away.

I think that first band was doomed to fail from the start. The singer was dating the bass player, who happened to be the drummer's sister. I also didn't get along with the singer, because he couldn't sing, and he'd get pissed at me for playing while he was trying to hear himself.

I've had other people I've jammed with, but I never found anybody that was actually trying to create music. I live in one of the major music cities in the world, and can't find anybody who is dedicated. It's starting to make me feel like I'm cursed or something.

Thanks man! I do try to play with some local acts when I can, but I just really don't feel it. None of them are very good...

I know how you feel. I've basically expanded my overall playing style to deal with the music scene. I started out as a blues player, but where I was living at the time, if you weren't playing the heaviest metal around, you couldn't get in a band. So I dedicated myself to being a metal guitarist, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but when I got hungry for playing metal, Emo was the new craze; and again, if you didn't play it, you didn't get in a band.

I was fed up with music scene in my area, and I wasn't going to play Emo music. So I just isolated myself from playing with other people for a while, and started focusing more on folk music, and that eventually spread out to country, and later jazz. Now I still have the metal chops, but I can basically work in any setting. I just focus on finding people who are at a certain level, instead of focusing on who is playing what genre.

It always helps to play with people who are at your level, or even better than you. I was in a band with a guy who could play circles around me on guitar, and it made me work harder to outdo him.

My problem now isn't so much that nobody is good at playing, nobody wants to take risks with music. Everybody wants to play their cover songs at the local bars, and nobody wants to create. I will not play in a metal band anymore, because everybody here is trying to be the next Pantera, and I think Pantera did a good enough job the first time around.

Hey man, really like your sound. I'm a fan of hearing fellow guitarists unique tones. It's always neat to hear somebody that doesn't sound like everybody else. I'm following you on Soundcloud now.

I understand what you said about working hard on music, and having to beg people to listen to it. The only thing I know that could possibly do you any good is to find people to play with and even if you can't showcase your music, you can get a lot of attention in that group, and that could end up leading people to your solo work. Someone once told me that you must always say yes, until you get into a position to say no. So you've gotta put yourself in places you don't like at first. I'm getting work with people who don't play music I particularly care for, but it's a foot in the door.

I did these a while back. Its the prequel-style version of the original trilogy. The idea was to make modern Struzan-style posters for the original trilogy that could work individually.

Well, a while back I realized that people have been used these designs as the official posters for articles around the web.

So, I decided to tweak it a little bit again (If George Lucas can do that, I can too!)

Here you go:

Love the look! While it's a photoshop poster, and I usually hate those, it's definitely got a great layout to it.

Amadeus is the reason I fell in love with Classical music. I was raised on the soundtrack from as far back as I can remember. I appreciate the film more and more each time I watch it. I believe the theatrical cut of the film makes it utterly perfect. There's not a frame of the movie, or a line that I think could've been better.

I found his new saber sounds quite interesting. The three prong design is still idiotic though.

It's the sort of thing a fanboy would design while thinking it looks hella cool.

How do you feel about Maul's?

Darth Maul is the only reason I bother with TPM. Yeah, the acrobatics are a little impractical, and too choreographed, but I don't feel the weapon is impractical.

I think nunchaku sabers are impractical

Though TFA's 3 blade saber is still pretty stupid.
