Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

In all this negativity I'd just like to give dark_jedi something a little positive. I'd like to thank him for all his hard work gone into encoding all versions that he has worked on. The previous still stands as a magnificant achievement in giving people something significantly better than the standard GOUT dvds. I for one cherish the previous versions he has encoded and welcome any improvements/additions to the next encode.

Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see the next encode! :-)

Thanks.

Idea & Info Wanted: for my Superman II - HD Fan Edit
Time

Hi all.

For the past year I have been working on/off some ideas for a Superman II HD fan edit.

My idea for the fan edit is to take the best parts of the Richard Donner Cut and the theatrical cut from their HD sources (which I already have).

I have already started putting it together but it’s a very biased view towards keeping it as much to the theatrical version as possible and simply replacing parts with superior footage from the Donner Cut.

What I want from fellow fans are your thoughts on what parts you’d like to see in this fan edit from both the theatrical and donner cut to keep things less biased and more acceptable to fans.

I am also open to any other suggestions like fixes/improvements you’d like to see made that annoyed you from the theatrical and donner cut versions.

On release it will either be in the form of a AVCHD or .MKV (or perhaps both) as this seems like a good choice in ensuring compatiability.

Many thanks.

Those lightsabers look sooo much better.

If I was being nitpicky in how to further improve them I would suggest rotoscoping news ones to improve the shape and colour but that would be very time consuming.

Still, what you've done so far I can't really criticise and I would be more than happy to watch you have done over the 2004 SE any day. :-)

Really? Like I said, I'm open to suggestions. I was really only going to do the musical number, Sarlacc and the orig. celebration. Just to make sure I wasn't forgeting anything, I went through this list and didn't really find anything else to despecialize. Exept maybe some little trimming t fit to the orig. audio.

Oh hey I am not saying you need to do more just saying that a lot of stuff was changed in ROTJ which is probably more difficult to undo over ANH and ESB. I think the changes you are doing are probably some of the most crucial ones anyway. :-)

The only other major problem I have with ROTJ SE which would need to be fixed is the lightsabers at the end with luke vs vader as they are seriously messed up. Vader's lightsaber looks pink and Luke's looks very muted at times too. This is probably one of my biggest complaints about ROTJ SE.

I posted some screenshots in this thread. Will add shots from the DJ/g-force version soon.

Nice screenshots much better than mine. You can tell I am not used to do doing them or the format of this board - hence the reason why the screenshots seem to be drifting off to the right. :-D

I'll let Moth3r post the next ones as he is much better at it than me. ;-)

Nice and subtle. Definitely works.

What software are you using to do the rotoscoping? It looks like it is giving you good results.

I can't wait to see what else you have in stored for ROTJ as there are so many things to correct/fix/change in trying to de-specialize it.

I did a quick comparison with dark_jedi's SW ANH GOUT sourced custom DVD and I have to say the colours of dark_jedi's was superior. The Editdroid one is great don't get me wrong but there was a bit too much noise in the opening scene in various places when vader and his troops board the rebel ship compared to dark_jedi's. Also some of the colours are a bit muted and washed out in places. Still I would say that Editdroid's has better definition in areas but this sometimes looks like obvious sharpening.

Overall I'd say it's a worthy addition to any Star Wars collection. :-)

Here is some screens comparing dark_jedi's GOUT sourced DVD and Editdroid's V3 DVD:

I'll upload some more comparisons later if you want me to.

Nice post, EvilSupes.

Thanks :-)

I was just saying what everyone was thinking from dphirschler's summary of this thread really. I meant every word. Adywan is a true saviour to the Star Wars fanbase. No doubt just about every Star Wars fan out there who discovers Ady's work will feel truly privileged to enjoy the Star Wars movies again and for that I can't express into words how grateful I am of his work.

Having loved Darth Editous's version, it was really neat to see your own 'test' preview of the 'zoom-in' towards the 'Vane'/'Pod' adywan.  Like DE's, it gives the original matte shot a real sense of life now, and your movement looks tremendous.

However, I'm wondering if your preview means that you aren't doing your original 'model set' idea anymore?  Or is that still a possibility?  Thing is, if you are now keeping the original matte of the 'Vane'/'Pod' as it is as shown in shot 1 below....does this mean that the current problems will have to remain?  Such as where it's outermost edge seems thinner all the way around in shot 1 compared to the 'gradually thickening' towards the base of it in shots 2, 3, and 4....along with the fact that the 'angled' bend of the front top-half as seen in shots 2 and 3 are different to shot 1 too.  These issues have been brought up before, but I'm just curious, although your previewed effect is certainly a huge improvement to the way the original shot looks -

Well the matte has gone though a few modifications since the preview. The gantry and walkway have been shrunk, along with the window and the sphere at the top has been made larger and had a few modifications. The scale as it stands now makes the chance that the carbon chamber could be at the top of the structure more believable.

Here it is in 720p mp4.

http://rapidshare.com/files/394232412/gantry_finished.mp4

And no, i won't be putting this on Youtube and i really don't want anyone else to either. I'm so fed up with how crappy youtube makes the videos look with their recompression. The last video looked like crap yet i uploaded the exact same one to facebook and it looked great. It's only a small download anyway.

Holy cow, Batman!

That 720p clip looks absolutely awesome! Great stuff!

Yeah youtube has really screwed up the compression settings. Used to be able to get some really great HD quality stuff on there and now it looks no different from any high quality SD content, except the SD quality has also got significantly worse in some cases too.

Yeh, ESB:R has been a real struggle. So many things have happened i'm surprised i haven't gone mad. I can't believe that i've got to wait until the end of next week before i can get an appointment to see the doctor because they don't class it as an emergency. Oh well, i'll just have to suffer these headaches a bit longer.

I am not surprised it has been a struggle mate - anyone would've found it a struggle and probably given up when you consider what you have had to go through.

I know what you mean, the NHS here in the UK is damn terrible at times. You could be nearly dying with something and they'd still make you wait ridiculously long. Makes me feel like going privatised at times but I can't afford it and I probably couldn't afford the insurance either on top of all my other bills. Hopefully they will check you over and give you some relief. I know a few people who suffer from migraines and it puts them out of action every now and then because it can be very debilitating - so I really empathize with what you are saying.

Anyway, get well soon. :-)

And some of the battle's Adywan has had to face:
-getting ripped off by the post office on numerous ocassions.
-health issues
-computer issues (power supply, monitor)
-getting ripped off by Gateway
-the challenge of getting good wampa fur
-hot weather affecting the plaster
-car crash
-unplanned apartment "remodelling"
-project helpers going AWOL
-migranes and temporary blindness(!)

When you see it like that, the man really has had a lot to go through. Most people would either simply give up or postpone work indefinitely, and go crazy. The man is quite simply a hero for sticking at it and practically saving Star Wars for many of us who were offended by George Lucas' Special Editions and thought we'd never enjoy the Star Wars movies properly again. He really is the saviour of Star Wars.

I think it's also important to congratulate the people who have helped Ady through this ordeal too, as no doubt support really does give energy and insipiration.

I have been observing this thread since the beginning (I wasn't a registered member at the time) and have seen this project go through the motions and it quite simply astounds me here we are with it still going and we have a release date which is december 2010.

Amazing. :-)

2004 DVD 2.0 sound
Time

It would be interesting to know whether there is a difference because the 2004 5.1 mix is weird and all over the place in ANH.

I have a feeling though it is the 5.1 mix converted to Stereo but I don't know whether this still affects direcitonal sounds in Stereo like with the rear channels being messed up in the 5.1.

1997 Special Edition Musings
Time

For me personally, when the 1997 special edition versions came out on VHS it wasn't long before I quickly ditched the ESB and ROTJ originals. I actually thought the new colours used for ESB and ROTJ looked better and it was only until they did the colours again for the 2004 SE that they it look just plain wrong in my eyes.

The first ANH was a little bit harder for me to budge on, as the original was  perfect in my eyes and I wasn't particularly fond of the changes Lucas made to it in the 1997 SE version. ESB and ROTJ changes were more forgiving and I actually liked some of them but again, the 2004 SE went too far and ruined them for me.

It would be interesting to see a comparison somewhere of different screenshots showing the differences between the originals, 97 SE and 2004 SE. I can only seem to find comparisons between the originals and 2004 SE from a lot of places and where I can find some comparison to the 97 SE, it doesn't compare much. Would be interesting to see the 1997 SE planet Hoth compared to the 2004 SE Hoth and see how bad the blue is during the snow scenes.

Also, is it just me or does Vader sound way cooler in GOUT/97SE ANH compared to the 2004 SE version? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am not totally aware of all the different audio changes made.

Star Wars Trilogy 1997 Special Edition DVDs?
Time

I'm one of those people who if I had to choose to keep either a 2004 SE or a 1997 SE DVD, I would take the 1997 SE DVD every time. The 1997 SE had far less problems with the colour timing, and there were aspects of the movies that still adhered to the originals.

The big thing that totally made up my mind about the 2004 SE being trash was how they screwed up the lightsabers - one of the most important features of the movies and they screw up the colours. Darth Vader with a pink lightsaber? I think I'll pass...

Yeah, the book you're referring to. Isn't that the picture that's missing one of the sun's. It otherwise looks just like the Special Collection screenshot.

It has been discussed that the scene is definitely darker in those areas you mentioned than on pre THX releases. But it was supposed to be shot day for night. I have a good screenshot comparison on another computer but ever since the new software, I haven't been able to properly embed any screenshots into the forum.

A very late reply, I must have missed your post and completely forgot about this ;) Anyway, this was the picture I was talking about:

And you're right, now when I've seen the Japanese Special Collection transfer recently it is more close to it in color than the "GOUT." But I don't know if this picture is any true representation of it's original cinematography and colortiming, I just got very nostalgic when I saw this photo and thought to myself, this is how it's supposed to look. But I guess we'll never know...

also the Canyon scene with Artoo being captured is very bright compared to the "GOUT" release.

Wow, that image there is exactly how I remember Star Wars when I used to watch my pre-1997 VHS tapes. Everything after hasn't looked the same since. The GOUT as you say is much darker and it doesn't look right to me at all.

Wish I still had pre-1997 source like the Japanese transfer. I would do anything to be able to experience that particular 'look' that I remember.

Aww, I feel depressed now. lol.

Wonderful work, Ady! I watched this last night and it was so enjoyable to see the theatrical cut in such high quality. You sound critical of your re-cut of the Wampa cave scene but, to me, it looked flawless! I don't have a fine eye like some others here, so maybe I'm missing slight inconsistencies, but for me this is better than I could have ever imagined possible for a fan edit reconstruction - really well done!

Many thanks again, Ady. This is my favourite version of ESB until ESB:R comes out. Good luck with the continuation of the Revisited edit!

I agree!

The man is simply a monster when it comes to dishing out Star Wars edits/preservations. How this man does it, I'll never know or understand. I don't think there is anyone else in the community of faneditors right now who have done the same library of work as Adywan. Definitely a gem to the community.

I think I am gonna watch it this weekend with my dad (he is the biggest Star Wars fan I know and saw each of them back in the day at the cinema). He already expressed his love for Star Wars:Revisited to me when he saw it, so he will no doubt enjoy this until ESB:Revisited is released.

The changes just show time after time, how god awful the 2004 versions are in comparison that it's actually almost offensive. So glad I found this place and community. :-)
