The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)

I wonder if Dick has seen your cut? Maybe you should send him a DVD regardless, because I imagine that curiosity will eventually get the better of him, even if he says that he wants nothing to do with it.

On another note, can anybody help me with the plot summary on wikipedia? This is the only major thing that the article lacks now. I especially need a bit of help with the Fred Calvert/Miramax versions, because I haven't seen them. If they're rather similar, perhaps it would be best to point out the differences instead of repeating everything again.

If you're willing to help, please go HERE and edit the plot section - thanks.

If you don't mind me asking, WHO talked with Dick?

...

Unfortunate news. Perhaps he knows that he will get obsessed with it all over again if he so much as looks at the Thief, and therefore refuses to have anything to do with it. Or perhaps he's just too busy with his new film right now.

Whatever the case, he doesn't want to open old wounds. You can't really blame him.

At least we have the Sept 12 DVD release to look forward to (maybe). I wonder if the company that's releasing the DVD will suddenly become much more aggressive about what you're doing as the release date approaches...

It seems like this is the calm before the storm... though I'm not sure if what's coming will be good or bad. :\

The info about the pencil tests is really interesting Garret, but if you want somebody from Disney to see it perhaps you should update your first post or something... although there are tons of people reading this thread, I think that that important piece of information may get lost in the 65+ page count if you just leave it there - I'd imagine that a lot of people don't have the patience to read the whole thread and will just go to the last page.

P.S. You've probably seen this, but you were posted about in The Blog of Kells a while ago (a production blog for "The Book of Kells", an upcoming European animated film that has a really interesting 2-D/medieval artstyle) - http://theblogofkells.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_theblogofkells_archive.html

Ok, it looks like Furious Freddy hasn't quite retired after all. I've brought this question up on the wikipedia help desk - hopefully they can help clear things up a bit. So far, someone answered there saying that I'd probably need a reliable source like a newspaper article about this restoration, which would mean that I could avoid linking directly to this forum thread (which would violate US copyright law or somesuch).

Here's my question: link

Well, as of August 17, that guy's retired from wikipedia (at least for a while) - check his user page.

However, he did have a reason for deleting that stuff that I'm a bit worried about:

"I did non-substantial cleanup on the restoration section, removing specific mentions of individuals who have made "fan restorations" of the film (great way to get the MPAA on somebody's trail)"

Is that something worth being concerned about?

Hey, I certainly wasn't blaming you - I'm fully aware of the fact that many other people downloaded it and had nothing go wrong. But I wasn't sure how torrents work (that was my first time using one), so I thought that it could be possible that someone along the line had inserted something nasty into the file that wasn't originally there.

Anyway... is there an article/interview anywhere where Don Hahn specifically states that he has plans to work on the Thief? Might be a good thing to add to the wiki article...

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)

Hey there, it's me again... on pg.56 of this thread (about 1.5 months ago) I asked how to get Thief onto DVD because Nero was giving me errors - someone suggested using DVDShrink so I tried that, and indeed it seems that the DVD could only fit 99.7% of the file, which was just a bit too big. So, no problem - I used DVDShrink to reduce the quality on one of the trailers to 95%, which should've made everything fit onto the DVD in theory. So I tried burning the DVD, and at the very last second (RIGHT before it finishes), it gives me some kind of error and closes down.

So I take the DVD out, and put it into the DVD drive again to see if maybe it actually WAS copied over, to see if the computer can read it. Suddenly, my computer crashes - total black screen, and I try to restart it and no windows safe mode works. The BIOS doesn't recognise the harddrive.

It took some difficult recovery efforts, but I got most of my files from my old harddrive back (I'm using a new computer now). So I'm wondering if what happened to me has happened to anyone else, and what could have caused it. Was it cause for suspicion that the Thief file was just a little too big for the DVD - could there have been a virus embedded into it somehow? Is it possible to do this with torrents, that someone along the line could change the file? Or perhaps it was related to me putting in that DVD somehow, or downloading a bad copy of DVDShrink. I don't know.

Basically, I'd like to know if anyone has any idea what could've happened, and if you've heard of anything like this before.

Aside from that, I'm really excited at the progress that's been made since I left... I've been following this project closely for a while now, and have been involved over on wikipedia a bit (though it seems that there's someone there who is opposed to making any specific mention of this restoration). However, I think that next time I will order a DVD directly from Garret Gilchrist instead of trying to download the thing... less risky - I'm not very keen on having a repeat of what happened.

It's just that so-so music which fits the action well is better IMO than very good music that barely fits the action at all, or goes against it. I actually think that the scene where the thief pulls himself up is a lot less effective now that the old music is gone. Perhaps I notice music too much? Maybe... I am a music major after all, it is to be expected. But there really does need to be some kind of sense of stuggle at that point - after all, the thief actually pulls so hard that he makes a dent in the pipe! The score should reflect that somehow...

Anyway, I suppose it can't be changed. I'm still glad at most of the changes that were made.

So... any idea of what went wrong? It says in the image in my previous post that the VIDEO_TS.VOB file "is not referenced and should not be present". Does that mean that I should not copy it onto the DVD?

EDIT: Oh, and has anyone else had a similar problem or is it just me?

I need help... I downloaded the DVD through the mininova.org torrent, but I'm having a problem with burning a DVD with those files.

Here's what I get when I use Nero and try to copy the files in the VIDEO_TS folder on my harddrive onto the same folder on the DVD:
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2449/error3zl.gif

The VIDEO_TS.VOB file doesn't open on my computer either (maybe it's not supposed to; this is the first time I've done this).. when I double-click on it a black window opens that closes almost immediately.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

I did watch a bit of it on my PC, though. Very interesting to compare it to the version on Youtube; there are some definite changes. Most for the better, but some for the worse (for example, the music where the thief smims in the moat and hauls himself into the pipe is much more appropriate in the Youtube version. You can HEAR and FEEL his struggle as he tries to haul himself in! The scene just has more life in it. Whereas now, it's just a soft melody... a very well-known one at that which many people will immediately associate with a certain ballet, and which doesn't fit the action very well). I did like how expertly some of the voices were cleaned-up from the background noise that was present on Youtube (for example, when Zigzag talks to King Nod on the field). And there were also some musical choices which were better...

The menu looks very nice as well. Just having those pencil sketches (?) there immediately makes the viewer look at the film in a whole different way. It makes clear that you're supposed to pay attention to the process of how it was made, rather than simply watch it blindly.
