With regards to Vertigo, I agree that it is slow at times, but the psychological damage of our character and the obsessive tragedies he experiences are quite fascinating to me.  The moment when Stewart holds Novak in his arms, looks around seeing the Spanish mission...powerful stuff IMO.  I think a big draw for the film is Hermann's score.  He's an amazing composer.

Hitchcock shouldn't have discarded the supernatural vibes so early in the film, IMHO.

Opinion: The Biggest Missed Opportunity in Star Wars History...

There's a new Star Wars comic coming out in January, called Star Wars. It follows the characters immediately following the events of the first movie.

My plan is to pretend that nothing else exists other than 'A New Hope,'" said Wood. "At least in the minds of the characters. The fact the reader knows so much, especially things the characters don't just yet -- such as Luke and Leia being related, Vader as their father, et cetera -- makes for some fun writing. I love 'Empire,' and maybe in the future I'll catch up to that film story-wise, but for right now I'm enjoying this beautiful moment in time, starting literally days after the Battle of Yavin when everything is set up and the future is wide open.

It looks like it could be interesting, but I'm gonna wait to see how word of mouth is.

Some people are already discussing it. A number of fans on TFN are afraid this series will disregard previous canon and go off on its own course.

Why they care about such a frivolous issue, especially at this point in time, is beyond me. They certainly didn't care when the prequels came out.

I don't know if a live action series could have worked. Would Hamill, Fisher, and Ford have continued playing Luke, Leia, and Han? If not, then they would have had to be replaced with other actors, and who can say how that would have gone? And what if the series ran too long, and the actors visibly aged during production? That's not a problem if you're working with an open-ended timeline, but an OT-centric series would have had to limit itself to a period of four years. And then there is the budget - a limited budget can make a series look and feel very cheap, even if the writing/acting is strong.

I think an OT-centric series would have worked best as an animated series, preferably back in the 90s, when traditional animation for TV was at its peak and, IMHO, at its best, before digital animation came into prominence and pretty much phased everything else out. That way recasting and age wouldn't serve as major issues, and you could get away with depicting large-scale battles and fantastic worlds without the need for a very large budget.

What do you LIKE about the EU?

To me, the Prequel characters seemed forced.  Kenobi and Annikin felt out of place in a Zahn story and particularly so in this one.  Annikin reads like an after-thought.  Zahn's work is much deeper than Lucas Prequel, so they felt like filler and I'm sorry they were there taking pages away from Jorus and Lorana.  The Kenobi and Annikin roles could have very easily been one of the other pairs of Jedis on that trip and in the context of the story would have made more sense.  Their reason for being added to the crew of Outbound Flight was thin.

Kenobi and Annikin also took pages away from the story of the ship itself, which I wanted to know more about.  I dig the idea of several ships married to a large inner core for a years-long exploration of unknown space.  In the story they plan on being gone at least ten years.

If Zahn had written Outbound Flight from a PT-neutral standpoint, I wouldn't hesitate to snatch a copy up from my local library and give it a read. As it is, though, I've made a firm decision to avoid any and all EU that I know with 60+% certainty isn't going to mesh with my personal canon, so I won't even bother. Shame, as the overall story sounds pretty good.

How would a Star Wars reboot do?

Oh, and to PT-lovers and "Nobody's forcing you to watch them": but Lucas' merchandising and marketing machine got permanently switched to PT mode. Even OT related products got tainted. I will never get X-Wing or Dark Forces sequel/remake that'd be devoid of PT influences. So my only choice is to skip Star Wars altogether. Sadly, that's what I do.

Reading this, I'm reminded of what part of Star Wars really needs to be rebooted - the EU. Remove the NJO era, Legacy era, and all the PT-styled Jedi and Sith outside of the PT era from canon, replace all writers with a hard-on for the PT with writers who respect and appreciate the old school SW Universe, and everything'll start coming up Milhouse.
