Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

and if the eventual official poster is better than this I'll be amazed...

If the abominationsaber makes an appearance on any official poster art, I will mix up a batch of cement, throughly immerse my hair in it, run a length of chain through my hair, let the cement solidify, secure the other end of the chain to the back of the family pickup truck, and finally have someone take off at top speed up the driveway while I stand behind the truck, tearing all my hair and most of my scalp clean off in the process.

The one and only time I watched Being John Malkovich, I absolutely hated it. Honestly, was I supposed to sympathize with the manipulative bitch and the suddenly-lesbian Diaz? If so, it didn't happen -- in fact, I felt nothing but contempt for those two characters by the end of the film.

I suppose I should re-watch the movie, though, just to see whether or not I viewed the movie through the wrong eyes the first time around, so to speak.

What do you HATE about the EU?
Time

Ah, this is suddenly reminding me of something else I hate about the EU -- something I acutely hate.

According to Wookieepedia, the peoples of the galaxy don't understand the physics behind hyperspace; they don't know if it's some form of higher dimensional space, a completely separate parallel universe, or the regular universe simply viewed from a FTL perspective, but they still know how to build functioning hyperdrives.

If they don't understand any of the physics behind hyperspace, how the hell can they constuct an engine that allows them to travel through it? It's like saying the creator(s) of the electrical generator learned how to build the technology without any knowledge of electricity, electromagnetism, etc.

It's stupid -- utterly, completely stupid.

IMO, instead of going with Ancient Aliens as an explanation behind the origins of hyperdrive technology, a SW equivalent of the Spacing Guild from Dune should have been created for the EU -- a third major power existing independant of the Republic/Empire and Rebel Alliance/New Republic which builds and maintains a monopoly on hyperdrive technology they sell to the other civilizations of the galaxy.

So wait, let me get this straight: You love TOS and the the TOS movies;

"Really like" is a more accurate descriptor than "love". And I'd place the TOS films (II, III, & VI in particular) before TOS itself.

you kinda sorta maybe like a few DS9 episodes a bit;

I like DS9 in general. In fact, I think its the only ST series that ever succeeded in realizing its full potential. It's only the technobabble and the stupid "Space Viking" Klingons inherited from TNG that I actively dislike.

you don't like TNG much (likely based on watching the earlier seasons);

I like 50% of TNG and I hate 50% of TNG. While the characters and storylines do improve significantly after the second season, the show's still bogged down by the ludicrous technobabble, secular humanistic utopianism, Space Viking Klingons, and the plethora of stupid-looking rubber forehead aliens.

you can't be bothered with Voyager or Enterprise;

Correct. I have absolutely no interest in TNG-lite or Geri Ryan's "acting".

and you're making blanket judgements of the reboot movies based on internet fanboy rants that you've read regarding them and to how the aesthetic of the ship is not exactly the same.

I've read a number of reviews on the Abrams' movies, some more opinionated than others. Cutting through the bias, I'm still left with generically stupid Hollywood plots posing as Star Trek.

As for the nacelles comment, that was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek jab more than a serious evaluation of the films' merits. Still, it remains an ugly redesign nevertheless.

Well, that certainly makes it easy to make a movie you'd enjoy in a franchise that contains hundreds of hours of onscreen content when when you only like maybe 15% of it. Considering there are 79 TOS episodes out of more than 700 episodes in the entire franchise.

If they could do it in the '80s, they could do it now.

I hate to break it to you, but the TOS show primarily consisted of variations on less than half a dozen plots: such as the ship getting captured or threatened; the crew getting captured or threatened; robots wanting to destroy the universe but being defeated by being told to destroy themselves first; the captain (or trio) getting stranded on a hostile planet; a handful of at-the-time culturally relevant plot topics; et al.

And you're failing to tell me anything I didn't already glean from watching the series itself.

I never once said TOS was perfect or even great. TOS has it's flaws -- great flaws. The costume and set design is very much dated, the limited budget/special effects of the time didn't allow the creators to create aliens that looked all that alien, and the lack of recurring characters, ongoing storylines, and character development severely hampered storytelling possibilities.

For all that, though, I still take TOS over TNG and its smug self-righteousness and stupid technobabble anyday.

Also, Chekov didn't appear until the second season (of 3),

And this is an issue why? TOS probably wasn't the only series at that point to have acquired new characters over the course of its run; it certainly wasn't the last.

and Sulu, Uhura and Scotty only had minor bit parts compared to the almost constant screen presence of Kirk, Spock or McCoy.

Yes, that is another of TOS' flaws. I, too, got tired of seeing the show focus on the trio to the exclusion of most everyone else.

So yes, let's not explore what actually could have happend to Kirk when he cheated on the Kobayashi Maru test, though Prime Kirk claims he was awarded for original thinking; let's not ask ourselves why Prime Spock would have joined a mostly human Starfleet when he dislikes his human side so much;

Since Abramstrek takes place in a divergent timeline, exploring all that doesn't mean a damn thing since these aren't the "real" versions of the characters, this isn't the "real" ST Universe, and these aren't the "real" depictions of those events.

Not that I'd trust modern Hollywood to do a competent job of portraying any of those events/details even if they were to take place in the Prime Universe, anyway.

let's not address that Prime Uhura made overt romantic advances toward Prime Spock more than a few times in TOS;

The only "overt romantic advance" I ever noticed was a single moment in a single episode when Spock was playing his harp to Uhura's singing and they shared some mutually admirative looks. Beyond that, I don't recall a single other moment of overt romance between them.

The romantic tension between Spock and Nurse Chapel, on the other hand, was very much in play and something I never failed to notice from Day 1. If Spock was to explore a romantic relationship with anyone, it should have been with her, not Uhura.

and nevermind that the franchise needs new fans or that the Prime universe is so mired in its own continuity that it became hard to write a good story that didn't conflict with them in some way.

There you go putting words in my mouth again. I never said the franchise wasn't in need of a reboot. In my more-or-less humble opinion, it certainly was. Such a reboot should have been spearheaded by someone like J. Michael Straczynski, though -- someone who's proven he can make smart modern science fiction without falling into the pitfalls of technobabble, rubber forehead aliens, etc. -- not a Star Wars fanboy who makes largely generic Hollywood productions who's even admitted that he wasn't a fan of Trek until he worked on the first movie.

Star Wars: Knight of the Empire (The Second Episode in DuracellEnergizer's New PT Re-Write) *CANCELLED*
Time

EXT. SPACEPORT -- SUNSET

As Obi-Wan and Siri step out of the terminal into the open air of Orron III, they spot Anakin and Nashira already there just beyond the front doors, waiting for them.

As the two parties converge, Siri breaks away from Obi-Wan and walks up to Nashira. As the two women embrace, Siri -- overcome with emotion -- smiles and weeps in unison.

INT. DUQUESNE HOMESTEAD/DINING AREA -- EVENING

Another three hours pass, and Anakin and Nashira have returned home with Obi-Wan and Siri. They have all joined Nemec and Corin at the dinner table, where they are currently engaged in light conversation over a supper of roast beast and hewhash.

NEMEC: So, Obi-Wan, how was the trip here?

OBI-WAN: Oh, it was the typical twelve-day flight -- long, tedious, dreadfully boring, but blissfully uneventful.

SIRI: They've added a third stop-over on the trip since we were out here last.

CORIN: Where?

SIRI: In an asteroid belt somewhere in the Abdju system, on one of the larger asteroids. (to Obi-Wan) You recall the name of the station?

OBI-WAN: Asteroid M.

SIRI: I think it was Asteroid Mern.

OBI-WAN: I'm sure it was "M".

SIRI: (to Corin) Anyway, it was just a small station, capable of holding a half dozen ships at a time.

OBI-WAN: And we just happened to get stuck there when a particularly nasty solar storm started blazing right through the hyperroute out of the system. We were laid over for five hours.

ANAKIN: You managed to get here on time.

OBI-WAN: You can thank Otto for that.

ANAKIN: Otto?

SIRI: The hot-shot pilot of the ship that took us the rest of the way here.

OBI-WAN: He knew of a shortcut through hyperspace that'd shave five hours' travel time off the remainder of our trip.

SIRI: Oh, it was a shortcut all right -- a shortcut directly through the stratosphere of a gas giant.

Two minutes pass.

CORIN: Siri, I haven't commented on your hair yet, have I?

SIRI: No, I don't think so.

CORIN: Well, it's just a gorgeous hairstyle. It looks absolutely stunning on you.

SIRI: (smiles) Thank you.

CORIN: Does it have a name? The style, I mean.

SIRI: It's called a vaddul chignon.

CORIN: Curious name.

SIRI: It's named after its creator, Vaddul Aiisio Huiun.

CORIN: Sounds like a Hutt name.

SIRI: He is a Hutt.

Four minutes pass.

NEMEC: (to Obi-Wan) How about those PDRs, huh? Great team, great team. You follow the ecometrics, right?

OBI-WAN: Well, I ...

Six minutes pass. By this time, everyone has about finished their dinner.

SIRI: (cont'd) ... we could help you with the harvest. It's no trouble, really.

NEMEC: But that's just it -- we finished harvesting the last of the maize today. The season's over.

CORIN: In two weeks we'll start planting again. Until then, we have lots of free time on our hands.

NASHIRA: Hey, I've got an idea!

Everyone at the table regards the young lady with open ears.

NASHIRA: (cont'd) That old amusement park in town's having its grand reopening in two days. We can take the trip out there any time before the next season begins and have a day of fun for ourselves!

CORIN: You mean Zorqo's Zoo of Zaniness?

NASHIRA: Yeah!

CORIN: (frowns) I don't know ...

NEMEC: Isn't the new owner some shady character who was run out of the Tion Hegemony?

NASHIRA: (waves her hand dismissively) That's just idle gossip without any basis in objective fact.

A moment of silence passes between them all.

NEMEC: Well, in that case ...

CORIN: I guess it wouldn't hurt to go out there and check the place out ...

NASHIRA: (grins) Excellent! (to Siri and Obi-Wan) Obi, Siri -- you're about to have the time of your lives!

Besides the notion that voices are 'genetic' is bonkers.

I mean, there's a certain about of something here. How often are older children mistaken for their parents on the phone? Maybe it's nature, maybe it's nuture, but it's real.

I doubt this would extend to accents if the children in question were raised in different regions than their parents.

Charlotte's Web (1973)

I don't understand why Charlotte has antennae. Spiders don't have antennae.

7/10

Frailty (2002)

It's funny -- the most non-linear, surrealist film I could ever watch comes together like a perfectly complete puzzle in my mind, but this movie ... this movie ... I just don't know what to think.

Anyway, it's definately well made, but it's not a movie I'd watch again. Not that I dislike it by any means -- the rewatchability factor's just not there for me.

7/10

Keyhole (2011)

For some reason or another, I went into this movie expecting a storyline that was more-or-less linear (I don't why I expected that, seeing as it's a Guy Maddin film, but I did nevertheless). However, right away I was catapulted in a great surrealistic morass I just couldn't make heads or tails of. Due to this case of mistaken identity, it took me half the film to finally immerse myself in its world and just go with the flow.

I'm definately going to have to rewatch this film again to get the proper experience out of it. Until then, my tentative rating is

6.5/10

Archangel (1990)

Another Guy Maddin film. This time, though, I was able to immerse myself into the experience completely. Though I only enjoyed the storyline itself moderately, I absolutely loved the retro '20s style of the film; that alone assures it a strong rating.

8/10

The Saddest Music in the World (2003)

Yep, yet another Maddin film. Suffice it to say, I absolutely LOVE this movie, I absolutely want to OWN this movie, and I absolutely want to BE this movie. Maddin has now been officially ushered into my Hall of Favourite Directors.

There's little more that I have the capacity to say about this gift from God, so I'll just leave you the trailer to watch so you can get just the slightest taste of that oh so sweet manna.
