That does indeed sound intriguing. So I take it you’re going to GOUT-sync it while you’re at it? I’m pretty sure the necessary AviSynth scripts were posted on here.

LOL… how do folks read so much into a few questions and comments? Right now I’m trying to decide if I should just release it as is or spend a lot of time making a LUT for WillRob to re-encode his source with.

Are you using the TN1 ISO of Grindhouse ESB as a source or do you have access to something with less compression?

I’m using the 20 gig MKV file that I THINK is GOUT synced and has a single 5.1 audio track on it.

The ESB Grindhouse was not GOUT sync’d. I still have the prores version of the ESB Grindhouse somewhere, is there a way to create a LUT from your settings, or a way I can reproduce them to make a new Encode with your color tweaks?

PM sent.

Hey Dreamster, as much as I like this grading I really don’t like the sharpening, it looks unnatural. Could you please ditch it?

There was no sharpening applied the shots of the Cloud City platform. I didn’t like it either, and though it might sound arrogant, I thought it might be easier for someone who wants to tackle a multipass regrade to start from mine so I also left it out to keep it more “pure”.

Update: So this is from the “final version”… I watched the entire film through a few nights ago, there’s a few spots where it seems the saturation is a bit high… but “this 5 second scene has too much saturation” is a far cry from the original’s issues.

A question was posed about the warmth of the Cloud City landing platform. Right before the ship does it’s last “turn” the movie actually SHOWS the “grade change” from normal to warm and then the next shot is the strong sunset that I’ve showed above. So when they land it makes sense that they are outside in this “heavily warm sunset” grading still. Here is before/after shots of the regrade:

Here… note the neutral color of the doorway:

OMG!! ❤️

But pretty sure they WANTED the interior to be warm from the red sunlight pouring in through “windows”… note again, the color temp difference of the doorway, this stay though, that image stays with C3PO (where he gets blasted!)

And finally… the very next scene… again shows how this recoloration shows that from shot to shot the color is all there and pretty consistant (and natural!!), it was just hidden in the Grindhouse megenta’s push and fade:

From what I’ve seen, the cloud city interiors in that scene are pretty warm. I think also, the TN1 print must have been very badly faded, otherwise they would have been able to use set photos, or just grade to natural skin tone and get something similar-ish to Poita’s scans. The snow and explosions in the Hoth battle could have been graded naturally as well. As is, they’re very purple, and the snow is almost entirely white and grey.
I was blown away by the grindhouse when I first saw it, but looking at it in the light of Poita’s scans and a few other references, it seems Empire was for the most part, a very naturally-timed film

Comments like this have me nearly peeing my pants to release to my one pass regrade of Grindhouse Empire. And I’ve seen Poita’s REEL 4… they are very close. I’ve added some shots in my regrade thread to show the answer.

Question, how do we feel about adding in a touch of sharpening?

Feeling real good.

😃

Updated photos:

This is probably close to my final version. The gamma has been adjusted considerably from the grindhouse edition and this version looks pretty decent across all of my various display sources. I applied a bit of sharpening to this one as well. Added in a few new shots.

Ripped this off of Dr. Dre’s blu ray thread… he said this would serve for his blu ray regrade inspiration when he gets to that movie in the future.

It’s actually tint shifted even more than the tint shift I did. You can see the slight “green” in Lando’s face and the more orange of the walls. I have a version I’m excited to test when I get home. Almost there.

Question, how do we feel about adding in a touch of sharpening?

Update:

So yesterday morning I rendered out a 30 minute portion so I could view it on my Plasma TV, which is very important because I really believe the brightness/contrast on my TV is set correctly, whereas all 3 of my computer monitors are all completely different.

Unfortunately what I saw was hideous. The contrast is so high that dark parts of the film are crushed very badly. And likewise, that has the effect of making the saturation look GOOFY high, which I think is what Poita has been seeing on his end. The sad part is… calibrating a monitor’s brightness can be done relatively decently by eye with calibration charts:

http://www.techhive.com/article/2079503/easily-calibrate-your-new-hdtv.html (see second half of article for images)

I spent the entire day going back and forth between avidemux 15 minute renders and my TV. I’m still not satisfied though I’m VERY close. The hard part is, in order to get the film to look right to me, the black of space is going pretty bright in the intro crawl. One pass correction is starting to bite me pretty hard. 😃 Hopefully I’ll have some new screenshots tonight.

The Red Velvet Curtain Edition.
It looks very lush.

I’ll take that as a compliment, thanks! LOL on my other monitor the cave snow is still green. Thing is, with a one shot correction you have to take the good changes with the bad changes across the entire film. What I can’t believe is that I was able to crank up saturation over 40 percent and not burn the living snot out of all the faces. Comparing it to Harmy’s and Adywan’s SE there is a lot of “grey” that I turned “blue”. But I still feel overall this is more pleasurable to my eyes than the original grindhouse colors. “Lush” is exactly what I was going for.

Update (Version 10!)
So taking something Poita and Willrob mentioning to me into consideration about the green snow and the green ending credits, I realized I actually could adjust the hue even more, throw up the saturation levels still high but then back off the red channel considerably. It might not be “accurate” but I really enjoy this version.

Thoughts?

Dreamaster, I actually saw a film just last week and it had some scenes in it in which there’s one set in particular where the bluray has a neutral grey background, but on film it is green-hued just like your screenshot and these ones from ‘age’. So while the hue may not be accurate for this film there are examples of other films out there with that green-hue.

The green there is coming from a hue shift necessary to correct skin tones on 80% of the film. Since I’m doing a one pass, weaknesses like this show, but I promise the end result is going to be aesthetically pleasing (at least to me, LOL!) overall even if the colors aren’t 1980 correct.

Poita… my martial arts master once told us a story about his instructor hitting his fist with a ruler and bruising it to correct his dropped hand while in a stance. He said that his chest puffed out in pride for the entire rest of the day, because out of all the students, his master chose to give him the correction he needed to perfect his form. While I’m not quite to that level yet (stupid American entitlism!) I’m definitely listening to what you’re saying.

I’m rendering “version 7” using the 1080p version as the base overnight. /fingers crossed!!!

I’d be willing to bet my left nut that if we had the grindhouse print rescanned, with the light offset to deal with the fade, that the colour would be basically the same as the UK print.

LOL… I had a vasectomy two weeks ago; your choice of words have me both smiling and cringing at the same time.

As much as I hate to admit it, a lot of the evidence leads me to similar conclusions but my brain won’t let me believe. As if even if Dr. Who picked me up and took me back to 1980, and we see blue in the cave I’d accuse him off rigging the film before we got there! Because no matter how much I replay the memory fragments of me seeing that film at the drive in theater as a 5 year old I just can’t picture it that way.

I guess with that said, if a moderator feels the need to move this thread into the “Fan Edits” forum I won’t object. Heck… I woke up this morning thinking about your first response… I might just release it over-saturated as Empire: The Wonka Strikes Back edition. 😃
