Here is another shot for reel 3:
I’ve added two more shots from Lars homestead sequence:
I like these very much too, DrDre. They blow the Bluray out of the water and then some.
Thanks!
Two observations if I may:
- 8th frame (Obiwan with hood up). The sky in this looks almost completely white - perhaps blown white - even after you lowered the brightness a little. The Bluray appeared to have more detail here: cloudier on the left, more blue on the right.
On the technicolor print the sky is almost white, so this is accurate to the original color timing.
- 10th & 22nd frames (Tarkin, Leia, Vader & X-Wing). Blacks look crushed in parts of these frames e.g. Vader’s cloak. This may well have been the case in the Bluray and/or my monitor is to blame!
This is bluray crush. On the print scan this is not an issue.

It’s amazing how these corrections are as beautiful as they are fast ! Is your source the raw Blu-Ray with the encoding error which blow the highlights out or a corrected version with the information recovered ?
I’m actually using Schorman’s 2004 HDTV preservation, as I already had it available on my external drive.
Here’s a comparison between the bluray and the regrade.
Bluray:
Bluray regraded:
I’m very happy with how the original barren look of the entry to Mos Eisley came out. It’s a very specific look, very different from the bluray.

You can also get a sense of the scene from the video of the Senator print screening:
Okay, now tell if I’m being too critical, but is this one just ever so slightly too yellow as well?
That one actually isn’t. This scene is actually quite warm. While I can’t show you the frame, the 1977 bootleg while being a bit more yellow overall shows similar colors:
Here’s a slight upgrade of the Tarkin shot:
Here’s a shot from the Tarkin/Leia confontation:
Why does this shot stick out so much from the rest? I think all the others look just amazing, but this one just seems wrong?
I checked the frames, and you’re right, it’s too yellow:
Here’s the complete set of regrades:
Another shot of reel 5:
A shot of aunt Beru, and the entry into Mos Eisley:
Evacuate in our moment of triumph?:
Here’s a shot from reel 5, and one from 6:
Here’s the complete set thusfar:
Here’s a shot from the trash compactor scene:
…and another frame from the sequence where Luke meets Obi-Wan:
Here’s a shot from the Tarkin/Leia confontation:
Here’s a slight update of the regrade, where I’ve reduced the yellow a bit in the Tatooine shots:
I’m wondering whether pushing the brightness up may be pushing it a bit. A comparison to the GOUT reveals, that the original “darker” version is already quite a bit brighter than the GOUT, while having similar shadow detail.
GOUT:
DrDre (“dark”):
In light of this, I think I prefer the first version.
Brightness is still an issue for the bluray, as black crush prevents using the proper settings. Here are the same frames with the in my view correct brightness settings for a home video release:
I’ve sort of rekindled my SE bluray regrade thread, creating several reference shots for future projects, which may include actually regrading the bluray:

To illustrate what I believe the theatrical colors of the 1977 version of Star Wars looked like, based on numerous technicolor print references, including the actual physical frames, and some algorithmic wizardry, here are several regraded shots, including the much debated yellow Tatooine grading, and the blue Death Star walls:
I will be adding new shots regularly, so if you’re interested, or want to discuss them, please visit the thread. 😃
