It's the one Shatner ripped off when he made Star Trek V only the TV version is somehow worse and it feels longer.

It's called The way to Eden.

I always thought The Final Frontier lifted off Beyond The Farthest Star myself. Both have a malevolent energy being that want to use the Enterprise as it's "body" to escape it's prison.

If you know anything about TFF's troubled history, the studio meddled with it, lest anyone be offended by musings on Gods and Devils, which was familiar territory for Trek.

There are no singing space hippies in TFF.

Well both have a cult leader highjacking the Enterprise to find Eden and when they get there instead of finding paradise they find so sort of danger.  That is what I was mainly thinking about.  As far as I know that idea was always the center of the script for TFF.

Yeah and the lack of singing space hippies is what makes TFF feel much shorter and less painful then TWTE.

It's possible that the 'eye' wasn't able to move far enough to burn the entire disc properly, and dropping it somehow moved something back into the right place (or out of the wrong place).

I'll take that, it makes about as much sense as anything else.

I didn't think of building a time machine and having the Fonz try to fix it, but I really should have.

After spending a month doing everything I could think of to fix this problem including unpluging and replugging the drive and all sorts of other things today I was taking the drive out in order to plug it into my dad's computer tonight and test it there when it slipped out of my hands and fell on the floor.

So I decided to plug the drive back in to see if it had been damaged and right away it started working good as new, I have no idea why.  I have plugged it into the same cables several times but that didn't fix the problem before so I can only conclude that dropping the drive on the floor somehow fixed it???!

I have no idea why it is working now but I will take it.

Thanks for all of your help.

It easy to see why, the burgers are getting smaller and the prices are going up. The dollar menu is now full of smaller burgers and fries that cost at least $2, they are served luke warm, half the time the order is wrong, and every soda and juice you get from them is watered down. I stopped eating there when I got an orange juice that was nothing but water and orange colouring, it had no taste and they had the nerve to charge me over three bucks for it. I can get half a gallon of juice at the market for half that price. Also the price of a mean there now runs between $7-$11

What might be considered an acceptable price for meanness?

I would be willing to pay $5-$6 for their meals but what they are charging for luke warm food(and this happens at every location I have been to in the past few years)and watered down soda is just insane.

I mean now it takes $4 to get the smallest burger and fries, that used to cost $2. So they have doubled their prices and made the burgers smaller, I really don't know why they are surprised people like me stopped eating there.

The only reason I ever ate there was because it was cheap, now that it is not cheap there is no reason to eat there.  They need to either increase the size of their food or lower prices.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Time

I finally finished Agent Carter and I am big enough to admit I was wrong and in later episodes they pulled it out of the problems I had with the first two episodes and stopped having all the characters act like idiots.

I get what they were trying to do, make a statement about sexism while making it hard for Carter to do her job, I just think they went too far and I ended up hating all of the male characters and I felt like they were not writing Carter as being smart, they were just writing her as not being a complete moron and since I really liked her character in the movie that was hard to watch.

Still as I said they got out of that and managed to give the other characters some depth and after seeing his family I really didn't want to see him die.

This was a huge turn around.  The series still had the problem of a lack of suspense because we know how it turns out but other then that it is very well made.  Lots of good shows have bad pilots and this one turned around in a big way so if there was another season of this show I would look forward to it.

7.0/10

Oh and AOS continues to get better.  I will not give away any spoilers but I really liked last week's episode and look forward to tonight's episode.

Well I got my laugh for the day, first by watching this video.  http://blip.tv/the-cinema-snob/beyond-the-darkness-buio-omega-by-the-cinema-snob-7164554

Then by visiting this IMDB page.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078916/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt#akas

Check out the Mexican title of the movie.

Now that is a dedicated fan and also why you should never completely trust the info from a site that is edited by users.

Maybe I am just sick but I had a good laugh at that.

Bottom line they jacked up their prices while reducing quality, since when has that worked for any company in history? You would think they would start teaching a class in business school that tells would be CEOs that this is a bad idea that will kill your company in the long run.

Where did you grow up?

I ask because all of that stuff sounds like what was seen as fairly normal on the frontier in the 1800s.  It sounds like a big problem is that your dad's world view is stuck 200 years in the past and you living in the modern world.

As i said getting out seems to be the only answer.  I would say just avoid talking to him until you get out, then you will be a lot harder to be upset by him.

If you really believe the earth is in danger from over population then why don't you kill yourself?

I find it funny that all the people who preach about this issue want other castrated or put to death but they all see themselves as too important to have it done to themselves.

Unless you cut your own reproductive organs off then you have no right to preach to others about over population.

It sounds like there is no fixing this problem so maybe you should look into government jobs programs and housing to get out of there.

Claiming that Christians who do not keep the sabbath, do not abstain from "unclean" meats, and choose to celebrate holidays such as Christmas and Easter aren't true Christians is stupid.

Too be fair this is something that was addressed in one of Paul's letters but it is something certain groups of Christians have always believed.  While the other stuff is messed up as long as he practices it himself I see no problem with this.

As I said if I were you I would start looking for a way out since it sounds like he was abusive when you were a child and short of Christ changing both of your hearts there is no fixing this relationship.

...And this here -- this more than any of their ignorant stances on evolution, overpopulation, or religion -- is a perfect example of why I can't stand living with my parents, especially my dumb shit-for-brains father.

       OOhhh! I can help!

Intuitive and Common Sense evaluation is a crucially important form of intelligence. Many if not most of the greatest scientific discoveries and inventions have been dependent upon it.

To be intelligent is to quickly process information and perceive valid points therein.

If your parents are able to intuit that the random evolution explanation is in fact full of holes and reasons to believe fabuluosly unlikely, if they can sense that the overpopulation concerns are being hyped in EXTREMELY dubious ways, by some EXTREMELY dubious characters, for EXTREMELY dubious purposes, if they can perceive that a Creator might wish to test his creations and so they remain unshaken and unsurprised by the ravings of "scientific" atheism...

...If they are able to do all of this in defiance of their lack of advanced university degrees and some patchiness in their educations due to basic life concerns... then you can take great comfort in the knowledge that your parents are, in fact, VASTLY more intelligent than YOU! :)

 Yeah, well said.

Simply disagreeing with you or even the majority of people or lacking knowledge in certain areas does not make one stupid in and of it's self.  Every single day we make choices about what knowledge we will take in based on how much we think it will effect us in our day to day lives.  For a lot of people the speed of light will have no effect on them and as for how the universe came into being, well that is so hotly debated that judging someone intellect based on that is just pointless.

We all have areas in our lives where we appear to be idiots. For instance I know a lot about history because since I was a kid I always wanted to teach history so some people find that impressive since I know more then the average person, then again I know next to nothing about farming and animal despite coming from an area that is mostly nothing but farms so some other people come away with the idea that I am a complete idiot.  My dad doesn't know anything about history and has never listened to classical music so I know some people who would see him as being a lot stupider then I am but he knows a lot more about medicine and first aid then I could ever hope to know.

The point is that just because someone has a different worldview then you and they don't know certain facts, that does not make them stupid.

It seems to me that your dad must care about you a great deal or you wouldn't be living with him and he would not have done years of back breaking work to support you, so why not focus on that instead?  I am sure it will make you feel better.

Yeah how dare he work hard to put a roof over your head.  Never mind why he has the job or anything like that, anyone who works hard to support their family is a bad person.

If we are all to be judged based on what knowledge we have then I would again point out that there is bound to be a person out there who finds you stupid.  Again try to remember this and maybe it will help you in future.

I am not saying you are a bad person or trying to attack you but one skill I had to learn last year was to look for the positive and not focus on the negative, and while I don't always pull it off I do think it is good advice and it has gotten me through so hard times so i am just trying to help.

Your father sounds like the typical under educated hard worker that used to be common place in this country a few generations ago.  if you are right and the labor he has done is so painful and harmful to his health then he can be admired for keeping at it and not just running out on his family.  That may seem like setting the bar low but I know what it is like to do backbreaking work and how at the end of the day you don't have the energy to study things like branches of science that do not help you put food on the table, heck my family is pretty much in that spot right now. I know a lot of families where the father just ran out and left his wife and kids holding the bag and I also know families where kids were kicked out once they turned 18 and your father has not done these things and it sounds like he must have paid for you to get an education, even if it was just the school supplies that is a lot more then some fathers do.  Also remember every person is a product of their times and upbringing and people of the future may despise you as much as you despise your father.

Try to focus on the positive and not to have an inflated view of yourself and it may help you be happier in your current situation.

I am only giving you this advice because I am trying to help and it has worked for me.

Hope things get better for you soon.

Just remember before you pass judgment that there are people out there who find your level of education and what you believe to be stupid and they may very well believe you have shit for brains.

Also considering that they have done well enough to put a roof over your head I would say they must have learned something that worked well for them in life.  Light speed isn't something that effects our every day lives and even today it is not a main focus of the schools.

Your parents must be nice people if they are still giving you a home despite your age and the fact that you hate them and have no respect for them.

Try to remember these things in future and maybe you will not get as angry.

What was the logic of the VCR/Blu-ray combo?
Time

Well joke is on Hollywood, because they refuse to release a lot of new shows on Bluray I just got a TV Tuner card and a Blur Ray burner for my computer and it only cost me about $120 total. So I stillmake my own, or at least I did now it looks like my burner died.  Still it cost me just over $50 and it lasted for four years of being used between two and four times a week so I am not complaining.

Oh what were we talking about again?

I have never even heard of DVHS, let alone seen it.

I wouldn't mind being able to still get a VHS player with my Bluray player, but then again I like collecting odd ball movies that never got a DvD release when I find them in thrift shops.  not sure that is what the average person does.

It's an Asus 12x BDR DL drive.  I have tried three different brands and my firmware is up today according to their website.  I even tried installing old drivers on it.

I have used both windows built in burner and all of my software and I get the same message.  The disc burns to the point where windows tells me "Finishing disc" and on the programs it says "Writing lead out" and then I always get the message "Unable to burn disc" and the drive just stops.

To tell the truth after doing some more research I think that it may just be that the burning lazer has died on my drive and I just have to save up for another one.  this drive has served me for four years or so without a problem so it's not the drive's fault if that is the case, I just have to save up for a new drive.

I just find it strange that it doesn't fail until writing the lead out.  Then again I am not an expert so maybe the drive has to do something different when burning that that is what is failing.

Any way I am going to try hooking it up to my dad's computer tomorrow and that should tell me if it is the drive or windows.  I feel kind of stupid for not thinking of that a month ago.

Thanks for the help.

Okay my computer has started doing something really weird and I can't find any answers on tech support sites so this is my last hope.

I have a bluray burner drive on my windows seven computer and it has always worked fine but lately something weird is happening.  It burns CDs and dvds just fine and it still reads Bluray discs without a problem but for some reason no matter what program I use it refuses to burn data to bluray discs.

Now normally I would think the burning lazer died or something but what is happening is that it is burning data to the discs and when I take them out I can see where they have been burnt but for some reason the computer is just giving up and refusing to burn the final step onto the discs so they can be read by a computer.  It just gives up and says an error happened as soon as it tries to close the discs and leave me with a disc that has data on it but it can't be read by anything.

As I said this happens no matter what program or type of disc I use, I have tried three different types of discs that have never given me problems before and none of them work.

I have tried reinstalling the drive, updating the drivers, updating windows 7, and reinstalling all my burning software but nothing works.  Even using the data burning program that is built into windows and never lets me down doesn't work.

This has been going on for more then a month and I am out of ideas and it is a big problem for me since my computer is my DVR and most of my blank discs are bluray discs and I don't have the money to buy new discs or a USB hard drive right now.  My hard drive is starting to fill up because I have no way to get video files off of it.

If anyone has any idea what is going on and can help me I would be very grateful.

Thank you for your time.

I never said I wanted to murder my family. I said sometimes I wish they were dead; that is not the same as wanting to kill them. I was just angry when I wrote that; I would not be an asshole enough to say say that in front of my parents' face or follow through on that threat. My family sometimes say stupid things that piss me off, but we're not dysfunctional or anything. Wishing they were dead, in hindsight, was a terrible thing to say, even though my feelings act otherwise.

As I started this thread, I usually try to contribute to everyone's distress to at least some extent.  However, I must admit that you are so negative that I am at a loss for what to say.  You really have such a pessimistic outlook on life and anything you disagree with that they only advice I can offer, and I say this without any insult intended, is that you need professional help.  You may need counseling to address such a negative outlook on life and to learn better coping skills with your situations.  We all face challenges, many far worse than yours.  But people learn how to cope with and overcome them.  You seem to prefer to wallow in misery and share that misery with others when you could take the bull by the horns and solve your issues on your own.  If you need help, there is no shame in getting it professionally.  I don't mean to be rude, but sometimes people need a slap in the face to change their thought processes.

I can only echo what Ender just said.  It really sounds to me like you are in the same place I was in and I and everyone else for years kept thinking I would get over it and learn to cope on my own and in my case it led to disaster.  Please at least consider getting some help before something bad happen.  I am not saying you are a bad person just that just because nothing has happened yet it does not mean nothing will happen if you keep going down this path.  Please consider getting help for your problems.

I will be praying for you.

I wasn't saying you were a bad person, I just know what it can be like to have huge mood swings.

I was depressed for years and I kept saying that I wished I was dead, but I never thought I would go through with it then last year I did try to kill myself and no one saw it coming, least of all me.

I just don't want to see anyone else go through what I went through because I know what it was like.  I was not judging you.

Sorry if I miss understood your post.

And the housing issue wouldn't be a problem if all houses cost at least a million dollars to purchase in my area. Just to be able to buy a house I would have to move to another state, commute several hours a day from another city, or find another job. I would have to make a down payment of several hundred thousand dollars, which would take several years or even decades if you make 30k a year and don't spend your money on rent, insurance, bills, gas, and food.

Your state doesn't have any housing under a million dollars?

Go rent an apartment.

I wish I could , but the rent's ridiculous too.

Some houses in CA are under a million dollars, but they're in the places like Fresno or Bakersfield.

You are not alone buddy.  I know just how you feel.  Before I lost my job I was looking for a place to rent and while prices are nowhere near as sky high here as they are where you live they are pretty high.  Most places here costs around $600 a month to rent and that was without utilities and one room.  The trouble is that because most businesses these day cut hours so much everyone I knew including myself only made around $600-$800 a month and unlike in past decades the landlords today will not let you have room mates because they think they are losing out on another renter if they let more then one person rent the same place.  So getting out of your parent's house is harder then it seems.

What is worse most people who have never been in this situation don't understand and think people like us are just lazy and refusing to grow up, I would like nothing better then to grow up and that is one of the reasons I need meds for depression.  There is nothing worse then the way some older people look at you when they see you are nearing 30 but have not been able to find a job that pays the bills, I don't think older people really understand what it is like today because the world worked differently when they were kids.

That is not to say older people didn't have problems but people lasted longer at jobs in the old days and there were not as many laws forcing thing on you, not to mention there is a lack of good jobs.  Back then when you were hired for 40 hours a week you got 40 hours a week, now adays I know some people who are hired for 40 but only get 12-20, that just barely pays for the car and gass they need to get to work.  I don't know if the situation is better in states that are not fire at will, like Delaware, but here my brother the assistant manager at a subway and he can't afford to move out because he only makes just enough money to pay the bills he has right now.  He has whipped three stores in the area into shape and works insane hours but they will not give him a promotion or pay him more and he has been looking for a new job for other a year but no one is hiring.  What is more back in my dad's day he was able to work three part time jobs, but now adays most companies have a policy that they fire you if they find out you have second job, because they want you focused on working for them.  The trouble is that once they cut you down to 12 hours a week that means that unless you find some sort of under the trouble job that pays cash that you do not report to the IRS(thus risking prison time)you only get that 12 hours of work.  Oh and it doesn't matter how well the business is doing, the subway my brother works at brings in about half a million bucks a week, and the wal-mart my mom works at makes close to two million and they always have long lines but they cut people's hours so executive bonuses will be higher. Again I don't know if this situation is different in other states but in Delaware they can fire you and not even give a reason so there are no unions and all the employers treat their workers like dirt.  Unless you go into the military when you turn 18 there are very few options.  I wish I had been on my meds at that point so I could have gone into it but I wasn't so I couldn't drive, let alone pass the fitness tests. Everyone I know who is my age and got somewhere in life had to go into the military to do it.

I know it seems like a lot of people don't understand and give you useless advice but I understand and know that sometimes you just need to vent and not have people give advice so feel free to vent to me if you need to even if you have to PM or email me to do it without being given advice, I don't mind.  I know where you are and I want to help.

Please consider getting some help so you don't feel like murdering your family any more.  I'll be praying for you, hope things get better soon.
