*sigh* I miss the old days when he was just the hero timelord fighting the villian/monster of the week.

Have to say that as a casual watcher and non-fan I agree. There's something oddly atonal about the concept and the way it's currently being presented. Much as I usually support it, I'm not sure Doctor Who is meant for truly serialized storytelling in this fashion.

FanFiltration's point about the music supports my theory on the tone clash, actually. I gathered with some friends for the premiere of this last episode and lost interest midway through, opting to hang out with the other skeptics outside. When we heard the score at times through the windows, it was like they were watching some big epic movie. I'm not sure Doctor Who fits that at all. If anything, I'd say it should be scored like theater cues - coming in or fading out as appropriate to get people's attention, but never omnipresent underscoring the way it is in the show currently.

Then again, I may just have issues with the fact that budget limitations keep the show from properly conveying "epic." My suspension of disbelief wouldn't be as hard to maintain if the tone matched the low-quality of certain visual effects. Though I will say, I enjoyed what I saw of Capaldi as the Doctor. I will probably tune in from time to time.

Again couldn't agree more.  I am burnt out on The Doctor going up against some big enemy that is a threat to all of time and space every single season. The whole string pulling villain is just played out for me and I would just like to see the Doctor bumble into messes on alien planets for a while now.

Oh and the music is way too loud,I can't hear half the dialog any more and I have great hearing and an amazing sound system so you know that is bad. It reminds me of in TNG when Rick Berman fired Ron Jones and had all of his scores replaced with wall paper music that was always there and always loud.  it didn't ad anything,in fact it distracted from what was happening on screen.

Things need to be toned down and the formula needs to be broken ASAP.

Oh disagree.

Rose was awful to the poor guy. Everytime he tried to move on she would turn up again with her wonder friends to rub his nose in it.

He rang true, the Doctor and Rose however were smug and uncomfortable to watch.

I was a bit miffed by the signals sent out by having Martha and Mickey both split up from their mixed ethnicity relationships and end up together. Sure it happens but we don't get enough positive examples of this sort of thing working so having them both fail and end up together left a sour taste.

Rory is sort of Mickey treated right by both Doctor and writer.

The cartoonish aspect of Mickey in that episode felt more like a spoof of JNT Doctor Who than a genuine use of the same concept seen in the first two Auton stories.

I couldn't agree more.  In fact when I saw Martha and Mickey together I turned to the person watching with me and asked "Why are they together, because they are both black?!" that just felt so weird.

I am glad they finally got it right with Rory.

(* Yeah not really as Transformers4 has taken twice what GOTG has, but it's nice to dream)

Not in the USA it hasn't.

I blame you "rest-of-the-worlders" for this one.

My researches seem to suggest this is mostly down to T4 taking $300m in China alone...

...GOTG hasn't even opened in China yet! (or Germany, Italy or Japan) so if it did more or less the same in those countries, that would add another $400m to the GOTG total. Plus it's still playing.

Maybe I was right and Michael Bay is dead after all!

 We can only hope.

Then again for some reason brainless movies that give me a headache seem to do well in China so who knows how this will turn out.

I didn't like it.  The plot was nothing but bits from old Moffat scripts, the new Doctor was never given a chance to stand on his own two feet either being overshadowed by the other characters or the last Doctor, and Clara was written as a fan girl on the internet and came off as just being mad that the Doctor is not a pretty boy any more,I can't believe this is the same character who jumped into the Doctor's time stream and saw him in the last moments of the time war,I will have hard time liking the character after this.  i liked her before but I think the spoiled fan girl act broke the character beyond repair. Oh and the story was the most slow paced in the series history and I have no idea what the new Doctor's personality is or why he is so depressed.  i swear Marven the paranoid Android has a more cheery out look on life. This new doctor has one note and that is suicidally depressed. This is the first Doctor in the history of the show that I didn't like by the end of his first story. I am saying this as a Moffat fan and someone who has defended him in the past but i think it is time for him to go.  His female characters have lost all personality,he is out of ideas for stories, and he has reduced the Doctor to a depressing bore that I really don't want to spend time with because he seems to suck the life out of every scene he is in and every person around him.  Again i am saying this as a Moffat fan but i think it is time for the guard to change.

I was excited by the idea of getting an older Doctor again and after the events of the last story I thought the Doctor would have a new lust for life but instead he has just gone down the same depressed path that the series has been heading down the past few seasons.  I wouldn't want to travel with him,in fact I wouldn't want to spend five minutes with him because he is such a depressed wreck he makes me want to slit my own wrists.  The Doctor is supposed to bring out the best in people, not leave them wondering what the point of life is.  This depressed Doctor may have stood a chance if the story gave us some hint as to why he is depressed but it didn't,he just won a major victory and got a whole new set of lives and all he does with them is mope.

Maybe the series it's self needs a rest and I hate saying that but right now it feels tired and depressing.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't watch Doctor who in order to feel depressed and have the Doctor tell me how pointless life is.  I'm sorry I know I will catch flack but for the first time in history I didn't like a Doctor and I really found the whole story to be a depressing bore that went completely by the numbers and had no sense of energy or excitement to it.  I am not even sure I will watch next week's episode and that is a first in the history of the show for me.

My rating for this story is 1/10.  Sorry I am a fan of Moffat's work and I really wanted to like this but nothing in it worked for me.

Yeah I cared about the characters and their fates.  Also I think the combat in Star Trek has always worked best when it is about characters trying to outthink each other and it remembers that people's lives hang on every choice made and little mistakes can cost lives and this movie had that in spades.  it was also very well acted unlike every other fan film I have ever seen and I will say it again I was more invested in this movie then I have been in any Star Trek movie or Sci-Fi movie in a long time so that twenty minutes were better and it looks like they are going to get their money so I can't wait to see the rest of it.

JJ THAT IS HOW YOU DO STAR TREK AS AN ACTION MOVIE! Make it about real characters, real polotics, real strategic thinking, about the real cost of war and make your characters adults and fit the action into a compelling story about them. This is the best Star Trek anything I have seen since DS9 left the air, great work and I hope to see more. That was in a word amazing. It puts every big studio sci-fi movie or show I have seen in the past five years or so to shame. That was just great!!!!

Random Thoughts

Same here.  I think it was Frank Miller who ruined him for me with All Star Batman and Robin.  Now we are getting a whole movie where he is going to beat the snot out of Superman just because he is more popular right now?  Not interested.

The same thing happened with Wolverine with the Xmen.  I used to like him but since he took over the "team" and every story is now about him and how awesome he is he has become boring and I have lost interest in him.

Hopefully more and more people will start to feel this way about these characters and this fad will burn it's self out soon.

Underrated Sequels/Prequels
Time

I liked Lana and thought she and Clark had more chemistry then Louis and Clerk so that is in the win pile right there.  With Louis I got the idea that she put up with Clark but loved Superman. With Lana I got the idea that she liked Superman okay but Clark was the one she really enjoyed spending time with and she respected him so the relationship came off feeling a lot more real then the Louis and Superman relationship. Lana didn't feel like she was just a schoolgirl with a crush but a real adult person.

Oh and the film has the best line in movie history.

"I ask you to kill Superman and you can't even do this one simple thing."

Yeah it's an underrated movie.

I almost never come to this thread, but I did today because of Robin Williams.  Very sad news.

Do you mean THE Robin Williams or is this another one I have not heard of?  I have been avoiding the news lately because it is too depressing.  if this is the Robin Williams I am thinking of then this only confirms that the only news we get these days is bad news:(

Video Games - a general discussion thread

Well this is good news for anyone like me who after reading the behind the scenes info on the last Dragon age game and what happened behind the scene on ME3(He was the one who locked the writers out of the room and then was so rude to even the most polite fans who tried to offer advice on how to fix it. He also went on a crusade to have anyone banned from the bioware message boards who reported a bug. He had me banned from a the tech support site because I was posting updates on a bug that was crashing the game and asking them to fix it). Yes I know it says he choose to move on but that is corporate speak for he was given the choice to leave or be fired. After two years and most stores still not selling out their enitial shipments of ME3 I can't say I am surprised. Heck the average price of a copy of ME2 is still $20 while the average price of a copy of ME3 is $10. I think that says it all. Good riddance I say. This is a real victory for people who want writers to write scripts and who don't want to pay $80 for bug filled games that are never patched. This is the best news I have heard since Lucas not being involved in the new Star Wars movies.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/08/10/mass-effect-3-director-casey-hudson-leaves-bioware/

I mean what kind of person has someone banned for reporting a game crashing bug to the tech support board.  I mean isn't that the point of that section of the forum and when a game cost $80 don't we have the right to report bugs and ask for them to be patched?

I am dead tired but for some reason I can't fall asleep.

I had the same problem last night.

Yeah I hate that what is more it's awful when you are in a house full of people because you can't do anything productive to take your mind off of the problem because that would make noise and wake people up.  All you can really do is sit and think about how tired you are.  I really hate that.
