Merry Christmas! (2014)
Time

DuracellEnergizer said:

For Christmas, I got the gift of another 24 hours taken off my life. In other words, it was a bland, empty day like any other.

I know what you mean, we all just keep getting older and our lives don't move forward an inch because we are completely powerless to move them forward.

Not to mention cops kill one guy so in protest people kill two random cops who had nothing to do with it. This may be the most depressing Christmas ever.  I really wish I had been born at any point in the past because the modern world just sucks.  It's nothing but death and depression.  The one thing I wanted for christmas I didn't get, a heart attack.

In the meantime, let's laugh at the fat fuckhead by looking at a couple of photos:

JEDIT:

Why is a husky sodomizing poor Doraemon?? Although he seems to be totally ok with it.

Kim Jong-un smokes a cigarette while visiting a baby home and orphanage in Pyongyang. The facility has over 250 rooms for nursing, education, physical exercise and treatment as well as outdoor and indoor wading pools, parks and various amusement equipment for children.

He looks like a parody character from Saturday Night Live more then he looks like someone who would exist in any real sane world.

Madder and madder.  Him and Putin sound like they're right out of a Monty Python sketch. One of those written by Cleese and Chapman, to be specific.

Putin invited him over recently. Who knows if he'll accept? Not sure who's the master or the apprentice in that scenario. ;)

Can we get some good comedy writers together to write a movie about that visit?  It sounds like it could be the most entertainingly insane thing put on film since The Room.

Kim Jong Un is a strange person. Most dictators usually are. The guy looks like an evil Pugsley Addams to begin with. Only Pugsley had a better haircut.

Wow!  Can't believe I never noticed that before.

He looks like he is just a spoiled kid and he could be bought off with some G.I.Joes or something like that.

Still That has to be the strangest thing I have ever heard anyone claim. I mean is he afraid people will see him in a negative light if they think he has to use the toilet like the rest of us? Because I for one don't care what his bathroom habits are.

I have now seen both the DvD and Bluray release of this movie and to my eye they seemed to be using different prints of the film.  The Bluray version doesn't look too bad, in fact it looks better then the DvD for brightly lit scenes, but in dark scenes the DvD version looks better. Also at some points you really can tell the Bluray picture is at a slight angle and there are a few scenes where things take on a greenish tint and that doesn't happen with the DvD.  As for which version you should buy I guess it depends on what is important to you because the Bluray doesn't look bad but for someone who is OCD about the look of movies these little details nag at me, I have no idea if the casual viewer will even notice the difference.

Does anyone know how to convert a Region 1 disc into Region 2?
Time

I don't know how it works in the UK but over here every DvD player I have ever owned converts PAL to NTSC on the fly.  If you use DvD Shrink to remove the region coding and burn the file to a blank disc it should work.  If that doesn't work this completely free and easy to use program will convert the file created by dvdshrink to a PAL MPEG2 file, it will even let you select the frame rate.  It's a great program that runs pretty smoothly, the only complaint I have ever had is that when you get one of the settings wrong the error message is in chinese, but everything else is in perfect English????  Still that is a minor point when this program does so many things well that other programs I have had to pay for don't do at all.

Terrible DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art
Time

Sometimes redoes are not too bad.  The John Alvin covers for the star wars laserdiscs are not the original poster art but they are still nice covers.

The cheap cgi Photoshop jobs i do find pretty much unforgivable.

Yeah cheap photoshop jobs are what I hate.  I am not saying they have to use the movie posters, just that I would like the covers to look nice and photoshop jobs just don't look right for older films.  The James Bond Blurays that look okay still feature photoshop jobs where you can tell the older actor's head is being cropped onto a photo of someone else and blurry backgrounds that just don't fit the feel of the films.

Die hard may be the best paced and structured action movie of all time if you ask me.  I am not saying it is the best but if you want to learn how to set up an action movie so none of the plot points seem like they are coming out of left field and you don't want you movie to drag at all, watch Die Hard because it is a perfect example of how to do those things.  It is also a great example of how to shoot and edit action scenes with energy while still letting the viewers see what is going on. As far as straight forward action movies go it doesn't get much better then Die Hard and I enjoy watching it every year.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

Yeah they are around, but since my great aunt died none of my extended family want to drive the half hour to an hour to have a family dinner any more.  When I was a kid and my Grandparents and great Aunt were alive we would have big family dinners complete with my grandfather setting up a giant train track under the tree, I miss that now.  That together with the fact that I never leave the house make the Holidays feel kind of empty and lonely now, it's just not the same.

Also it doesn't help that I just watched Christmas vacation today and that brought back memories of my childhood.

Well, TAS could still bring it up to three.

Has anybody ever done an edit of that scene, where one of the bulbs burns out at a key moment? ;)

I have never seen it if it has been done but i would love to see it now.  You know that would make a perfect little skit for Robot Chicken:)

"Damn it!, Now I have to change the bulb. Oh and wouldn't you know it?! Some forgot to buy light bulbs when they went shopping, Why do I even bother making a shopping list if none of you dumb asses are going to read it?!"

Can't remember hearing anything lately, but once the Blu-ray version is available, are there already some volunteers lined up to burn copies for those who are unable to do so themselves?

I'd be willing.  I have a really fast dual layer burner and and I huge stack of blank bluray discs.

Once the bluray version is out there and I have downloaded it just let me know if you want a copy via PM.

Great so Star trek is going to get even dumber and the characters are going to be even more like overgrown frat boys then they already are and it is going to be even harder to tell what is happening on screen. No brains allowed in Star Trek any more, they may as well change the name of the series to Meatheads and Explosions. I am just going to pretend Trek died when the final episode of Deep space nine aired and nothing was produced after that, it's better for my blood pressure.

Can I just say thank you again for doing all this?

I mean it when i have not been this impressed by the work done by a fan to restore something since the early days of the Doctor Who DvDs.

When I showed these to my mom she cried because she and her sisters are now living all over the country and rarely see each other and one of the last things they did when she was young and they were all still living in the same house was see the first movie in theaters over two dozen times.  She told me that for the first time at home she was seeing the same movie she had seen all those years ago and she could make out all of the details on screen with her eyesight getting worse.

Yet even after that you are still working to make these even better, thank you so much from both my mother and me.
