A character transcends their actor or their creator. They are what they story needs them to be, provided it fits within what has been established. Just because Sulu hasn’t been shown as gay before doesn’t mean it can’t fit within what has been established. And, while I know when Takei says Gene’s original vision he’s talking about the very specific fact of Sulu’s orientation, I do believe this change is very much in keeping with Gene’s larger vision (unless his vision for an all inclusive Federation somehow excluded gay people?).

Making Sulu gay is an amazing decision. It’s unfortunate that George finds it unfortunate. It very much fits in with the diverse and accepting nature of the original show.

And was Sulu ever proven to be not gay? Don’t see the issue here (it’s not even completely out of left field for the character because of Takei’s orientation). Awesome that Trek finally has a gay character. Beat Star Wars to it!

I was just thinking the other day about how the Yoda vs. Palpatine battle was probably the biggest bit of fan service the prequels did.

When I was a kid, the prospect of it made me quite excited. I had always wanted to know if Palpatine and/or Yoda had a lightsaber, and if so I always wanted to see them duel. I also always wanted to see a lightsaber battle in the Senate arena. So yeah that fight was sort of many dreams come true.

Of course the problem is, these were the dreams of a 9 year-old, so maybe not the best to actually depict on screen. Didn’t help that it’s completely ridiculous and perhaps the single worst choreographed fight in the series with no compelling action/momentum/drama or reason for being.

The commentary should be on a completely different track. Hal’s V4 COD edit has three tracks (the edit, the edit minus added pod race music, the commentary). The first two tracks are 5.1 and have 6 channels. The third track is stereo with two channels. Delete the third track and one of the others depending on whether you want the extra music.

Again, I’m just giving broad strokes. Consult google and FE.org to figure out the specifics of your system if you need to.

Well I assumed the easy way would be to match the opening blast of the main title but for some edits this may not work. Basically, the easy way is just to take two of the same scene from each edit and check the levels. Then adjust the gain of one to match the other (if dialogue is at -18 in one and -20 in the other, boost the second by 2 db). This one simple adjustment should make the levels match throughout.

Also, when I import Hal’s 720p m4v it is like 6 or 7 mono channels instead of one 5.1 channel. Know how to fix?

Yeah Hal is right it’s supposed to be 6 distinct channels. You just have to make sure they are in the right place. I mean, they should be already but there’s probably a way to check the file’s properties to find out (Google if necessary). More likely than not the audio is already ready to go.

It’s mainly just matching audio sources for a suitable surround sound export format.

I’ve been working on a similar project with Premiere (though most NLE’s should have the same capabilities). You should be able to match up the audio with very minimal work (some crossfading is occasionally necessary). If the audio is properly channeled out (and at the same level) they should cut together very well. If not, there might be an issue with the source audio (this is how I noticed Hal’s audio was messed up in the first place).

Well if you’re not going to talk about it in some kind of detail then there’s no point in bringing it up because the conversation is going to be 10 seconds long. Also any type of sexual encounter (excluding rape of course) is an achievement and is something to be celebrated by both genders.

Well the fact that you see it as an achievement is sort of a part of the problem. I see it as more of a side effect of finding someone that you really care about (not to say there’s anything wrong with one night stands and the like). Seeing it as an achievement is the kind of mentality that treats women as objects.

One could go into all the dirty details but then it’s a rather personal thing, right? And not just personal for the individual but for their partner too. Thus where the maturity to show restraint in details comes in.
