Was the one with the Italian audio track yours then?

Btw, messed around with Pulp Fiction. Burned a day and it came out crap(ish). The letterboxing is inconsistent from deleted scene to scene. It's encoded as 23.976 (29.97 internally) so if you can keep the computer from telecining on the fly to get to 30fps while you're adjusting the AR you find that you still have interlacing artifacts(!) On top of it you have to re-encode the video to get to anamorphic and the audio has to be run through BeSweet to change the rate from 29.97 to 23.976. Once you've done all that you DO have what you need, but it's a huge pain in the butt.

I assume the full movie is 23.976 progressive film, but I didn't look. If it's the same funky setup as the deleted scenes you have to use DVD Decrypter, VirtualDubMod to demux and then video using 3 filters save as Huffyuv, CCE conversion, DGPulldown, and BeSweet. Yikes this was complicated. There might be an easier way, but none I found that worked.

Harry Potter Movies: I'd love to see a good extended cut of these since they seem to be sitting on their ass instead of doing a real release with as much footage in it as possible. And now to paraphrase myself from another thread:
I've seen copies of a fan edit of Harry Potter Extended Edition (dual channel english/italian) with DVD deleted footage added back in. It's really done well.
The problem is that the ABC TV version have even more content than the deleted footage available on the DVDs, most importantly this includes transitional elements (and music cues) that are missing from the fan edit, making some of the edits a little hard compared to the ABC counterpart.

Yes I put a lot of effort into this, I sat and compared my vid tape of HP1 with an extended cut from the net. I also know for a fact that there was deleted scenes in HP2 on ABC that I've never seen anywhere else (including DVD deleted content) (including the letter from QuikSpell).

What we really need is someone with digital cable/satellite and a TIVO willing to do a PDTV copy for everyone. Heck they broadcasted in HDTV with 5.1 sound! I'm actually surprised that FoV, BT@Efnet, etc. never did these.

Pulp Fiction /DigitalMan: I'm actually not bad with the ripping, anamorphizing, etc. The deleted scenes would also need to be re-encode. I'll take a swing at it this afternoon 'cause I'm bored. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hal9k: 2 things you might want to try. I have a crappy Maddog DVD drive at the moment that has questionable compatibility so here are some trick that might help.

After first putting the disc in the drive, run Nero InfoTool and let it look at the disc. For some reason even if windows couldn't identify the disc, Nero will and until you remove the disc (or reboot), it'll run fine.

Another thing that can help during playback problems is DVDIdle: http://www.dvd-idle.com/dvd-idle.htm
It makes your drive read ahead and cache the data.

Hope that helps

Ok the initial shock has (almost) worn off.

So in your process to recover the stars (hey that sounds like a great movie title), you've got what sounds like a temporal re-noiser.

Wouldn't the process in theory allow you to improve the quality of the whole movie's capture?
Just an idle thought.

I agree, the audio on a .vob could be demuxed and a corrected one remuxed and just the one vob would need to be redistributed. (The de/remux is easy enough but the average person might be lost).

ADM: You want extreme? I've written, thrown away, and trash picked (several times now) an edit script for Matrix 2 & 3 that gives the movies a happy ending. The continuity is a bear and it's a huge project. I have great respect for you and everyone who actually pulls off a fanedit.

Good capture cards - recommendations?
Time
It's been several months, I'd like to revive this thread.
I'm looking to do a preservation project from VHS.
The vcr is a few years old and has both composite and S-video out (although the tapes are not SVHS). The VCR has digital tbc/nr built-in which really does nice things for the picture.

Anyway, I don't know where it falls in the whole composite vs. s-video comb filter thing.

Currently I've been capturing with a GeForce4 TI 4200 from eVGA. I know I can probably do better, but I'm not sure where.

I guess the questions are: would I get better results using s-video (and theoretically the VCR's comb filter)?
Should I just get a dedicated capture card, if so what do you all recommended now?

So for fear of prolonging a conversation that is starting to seem off topic:
Are you allowing your capture hardware/software to IVTC or are you using a decomb/GreedyHMA plugin? I think you said you were using Avisynth so probably the plugin filters.

I'm just trying to get my mind around how you deal with the 2/5ths of the frames that only exist as interlaced, since deinterlacing them is damn hard to do well. You would have to reconstruct them correctly somehow without introducing artifacts.

Again, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but all I have to go on is other video guides.
I'm starting to be remarkable impressed with what you guys have done. (More than before.)

So, which edit of Ep1 is everyone's favorite?
I've seen a couple and had mixed feelings.

I'm now getting ready (as soon as I fix my ratio elsewhere) to grab ADigitalMan's Vergence of the Force and I was curious what everyone's opinion was on it.

Btw, off topic I know, but has anyone seen the fan edit: Matrix deZIONized? It has me intrigued, and I'll definitely be adding that to my watch list.

I suppose I stand corrected.
I was under the impression from most of the "conversion to DVD" guides out there that if your source is interlaced you do more damage to the quality by de-interlacing (which is never perfect) and generating a progressive DVD.
It is also unnecessary since the final output device will most likely be a television and therefore an interlaced device.
It is considered preferable to capture, and encode retaining the interlacing and to only use progressive if your source is true film (which a laserdisc is not).
I won't argue (although it does sound like I am) since you guys have done more of this than I have, but I find it hard to believe that so many guides (from reputable sources) are wrong.

Now I'm confused. While I understand what you are saying, and it's damn cool, aren't DVD's by their nature interlaced (at least NTSC ones)? Hence the Bob/Weave filters in software based DVD players.

Or are you saying you took the Laserdisc, deinterlaced it to get the original frames and then reinterlaced it when encoding the dvd? If so, I'd love to see the AviSynth script you used.
