The "Farsight" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
So for fear of prolonging a conversation that is starting to seem off topic:
Are you allowing your capture hardware/software to IVTC or are you using a decomb/GreedyHMA plugin? I think you said you were using Avisynth so probably the plugin filters.

I'm just trying to get my mind around how you deal with the 2/5ths of the frames that only exist as interlaced, since deinterlacing them is damn hard to do well. You would have to reconstruct them correctly somehow without introducing artifacts.

Again, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but all I have to go on is other video guides.
I'm starting to be remarkable impressed with what you guys have done. (More than before.)

Star Wars - The Edits and DVDr releases thread
Time
So, which edit of Ep1 is everyone's favorite?
I've seen a couple and had mixed feelings.

I'm now getting ready (as soon as I fix my ratio elsewhere) to grab ADigitalMan's Vergence of the Force and I was curious what everyone's opinion was on it.

Btw, off topic I know, but has anyone seen the fan edit: Matrix deZIONized? It has me intrigued, and I'll definitely be adding that to my watch list.

I suppose I stand corrected.
I was under the impression from most of the "conversion to DVD" guides out there that if your source is interlaced you do more damage to the quality by de-interlacing (which is never perfect) and generating a progressive DVD.
It is also unnecessary since the final output device will most likely be a television and therefore an interlaced device.
It is considered preferable to capture, and encode retaining the interlacing and to only use progressive if your source is true film (which a laserdisc is not).
I won't argue (although it does sound like I am) since you guys have done more of this than I have, but I find it hard to believe that so many guides (from reputable sources) are wrong.

Now I'm confused. While I understand what you are saying, and it's damn cool, aren't DVD's by their nature interlaced (at least NTSC ones)? Hence the Bob/Weave filters in software based DVD players.

Or are you saying you took the Laserdisc, deinterlaced it to get the original frames and then reinterlaced it when encoding the dvd? If so, I'd love to see the AviSynth script you used.

I have been talking to someone who has generated a DVDr of his own from his laserdisc edition of Song of the South.
Can't say what the quality is or really much detail at all. He was going to start a divx torrent but I'm trying to convince him to torrent a DVD image.

It'll be posted on Demonoid.com in the next few days I believe. PM me if anyone wants details.

Ok CowC, I have to ask, I know there are heated debates over this, but why did you choose CCE over Procoder? Many argue that CCE produces excessive mosquito noise.

I ask because I'm getting ready to do my own (non-SW) project and I was ready to go with CCE. That was before I did more research on it.

For image priority are you referring to Quantizer Characterisitics?
Also what version of CCE?

Slightly off topic here, but this is an off topic thread to start with.

I am planning, once I get my DVD burner to do a preservation of the mid-90's TV series VR5.

It had a single crappy VHS release that skipped an episode and had a different soundtrack (to save money).
I have OK vhs copies from their original broadcast (and the unaired episodes were sent to me from Canada). I'm going to take them to DVD for my own purposes either way, I just wondered if there are other's interested in these if it ever gets finished?

How to convert AVI to DVD files?
Time
My $.02 on DivxToDVD:

It appears to use a single pass constant quality compression for the video. The average bitrate of my final DVD was 3560kbps. This would be ok if you had a VHS source, but a good Divx is better than that.

It picked a 160kbps AC3 rate (2 channel source), which I probably would have gone a bit higher myself but not critical. Does anyone know if it uses a higher bitrate for 5.1? If not, that would be bad.

Ease: Fantastic, nothing really to do but pick the file and hit go. Probably one of the easiest I've ever seen.
Quality: Not bad, you ARE recompressing a file so you make allowances, but I probably would have favored a multipass encoding if the source was better.
Price: Good AC3 and MPG2 encoders can be really expensive for the good stuff. This is free (for now), you gotta love that.

Overall, if you're useless with this sort of thing I'd give it an A, if you know what you're doing and have no problems with "the long way" it's a C+.
It hasn't implemented joining multifile Divx, and it doesn't seem to be able to handle multiple audio streams, let alone subfiles.

How to convert AVI to DVD files?
Time
Advanced of converting PAL->NTSC. (I'm using it to take Divx to DVD as well).

Much harder, but better quality:

1) Demux & convert audio (use software of choice, although BeSweet is popular and free there is a flaw in AC3 conversion that lowers the volume. No fix and this has been a problem for awhile.)
When converting, do NOT use Pal->NTSC, just convert the audio to change encoding.

2) Convert Avi -> DVD at correct NTSC resolution (720x480, etc). Leave the frame rate alone!
You now have PAL frame rate video, PAL rate audio, but NTSC resolution. I recommend AviSynth with CCE, but TMPGEnc is fine.

3) Use DGPulldown to convert from 25->29.97 frames. It takes MPEG2 video elementary streams, and applies pulldown flags to change it to a different legal MPEG2 frame rate. (Actually there is a somewhat confusing way of doing this directly in TMPGEnc.)

4) Author it. You will see little to no slow down in the film/audio. What it really is doing is changing it to 29.97 but it's really 24 fps NTSCFilm internally.

It's what I've been doing, but I'm a stickler.
I will try DivxtoDVD though, it comes from a great company (they make BlindWrite!).

.: The X0 Project Discussion Thread :. (* unfinished project *)
Time
Ok, I've been following X0 and a bunch of threads here for awhile now.

What I would love to see is a comparison of the different versions that will be created from X0.
As I understand it there will be discs from MeBeJedi, Zion, and Laserman (?) all from the X0 capture.

What will the differences be and is it worth you all working separately from the same source instead of continuing to collarborate through to the finished product?

Cowclops really gets the last word, but that doesn't stop me from dropping my $.02.

What you all need to realize is that there are a multitiude of transfers out now. They all have their own names that most people didn't know until they knew it was the version they wanted.

Once CC v2 is out the old "TR47" one is pretty much going to fall by the way side. As long as people know that the edition to own is CC v2, it won't matter that it ever had any association with the previous TR47/CC v1. This is a stupid arguement.

Help Wanted: re the Leia welding footage from ESB
Time
Hey nobody here is flaming the X0 project. It is bloody amazing and I'm naturally impatient.

I will be lining up whenever MeBeJedi and Zion have their releases done, whenever that is.

In the mean time I want the best of what I can get. In my mind that is Farsight's discs.
If I can fix a few seconds of missing footage myself to make it better, so be it.

.: Moth3r's PAL DVD project :.
Time
I've come to this thread late, and I apologize if this has been resolved, but there seems to be occasional talk about an NTSC version of Moth3r's set, and how hard it would be.

Since I just did something similar lately, here's a proposed method if someone wants to try it:
1) Use DVD decrypter and make separate direct stream audio and video rips.
2) Use DVDPatcher on the video file to convert the header from 576 lines to 480.
3) Use DGPulldown to change the flags from 25 fps to 29.97 (it's actually 23.97 fps NTSCFilm internally)
4) Remux audio video.
5) Reauthor DVD (easy if you just want the movie and lots more work if you want to convert the menus too).

There will be no slow down as a result (DGPulldown is great), but your DVD player may need the ability to actually play PAL to some degree (at least video with 576 lines). Compatibility will probably vary.

Just thinking out loud.

Btw, some fantastic clarity to your DVD Moth3r.
