Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

If you can get the a graphic format of the subtitles (ifo/sup, idx/sub, etc.), you can upscale them with BDSup2Sub to HD sizes.

The program allows you to resize with various filter methods (from bilinear & bicubic to Lanczos3 & Mitchell), retime, change frame rates (good if you're using a PAL source) and more.

Output formats include BD SUP.  This way you don't have to mess with OCR.

Trying not to get off subject, but 4k is considered the limit of detail on film.  That has to do with the grain (individual particles in the film that make up the picture) that while physical bits are pretty much the analog equivalent of the pixels.

You could digitally scan for more detail, but you won't get anything more out of it.  So 4k is the end for digital transfers.

All they can do after that is to find some lossless codec to eliminate the loss from digital compression.

That said, I'm glad I haven't actually got around to burning the v3 discs yet.  D_J keeps surprising me with what he pulls out.

@Sharkiesf - FYI, 2000p is techinically about 4096x2160 (depending on the format and is referred to as 4k because it has 4000 lines of horizontal resolution (instead of naming it by the usual vertical resolution).

4k in theory is the limit of data that can be extract from a film print.  Some manufacturers will be bringing 4k HDTVs to market this year (and showed them this week at CES ( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2012/01/ces-4k-tv-sets-make-their-debut-minus-the-hoopla.html ).

BluRay players that are 4k capable and can upscale 1080p to 4k should appear in 2013.

Mind you I don't think Dark_Jedi will get anything reasonable trying to hit 4k from the GOUT source. ;-)

Need some suggestions for a comic edit... (Ken Burns style?)
Time

The Middleman TV series ended before its final episode was ever filmed.

Javier Grillo-Marxuach created a graphic novel of the final episode, and at Comic-Con held a table read of the script.

I did create a custom DVD with the table read and custom English subs (based on the script) to fill in anything that is drowned out or unintelligible.

Still, I have been toying with the idea of creating video of the comic (probably without any animatics), and syncing it to the audio of the table read (plus some likely audio enhancements).

That said, I realize I have no idea how to actually do it.  I'm assuming After Effects is the tool, but I wouldn't know where to start.

I'm open to suggestions.  (Heck, I'm open to volunteers to do this project so it doesn't suck.)

They did a simple 4k scan of the nitrate negative.  They did no cleanup work and no 8k as for other films that they have done.

It was simply a way to preserve the negative so when it goes bye bye like steamboat willie at least they have the digital files.

Is there any point doing an 8k scan on a 1.37:1 35mm?
I thought 4k was the limit of detail for that stock and 8k is used for wider formats.

It's why I was occasionally forced to use the full re-encode setting.

All the way back to my first fan edits, I remember previewed edit points within Womble sounding different than exported clips.
To avoid re-encoding I'd do a lot of trial and error test clips until it sounded right.

Anyone else have a reason to use the full re-encode setting besides volume fluctuations?

The Mentor DVD appeared to be a DVDr recording of a standard definition BBC broadcast... but I couldn't swear to it.

I'm thinking there isn't an available HD master for anyone to broadcast on TV.  But Disney is working on it.  (I'm not saying they'll release it, but they are making an HD transfer.)

Interesting article: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/t/314907/disney-s-restoration-of-dumbo-and-efforts-to-preserve-their-film-library

What's important here:

This project has been used to get 4K scans and new prints to preserve live action classics like Song of the South (no plans to release)...

At least they aren't pretending it doesn't exist.

Doctor M said:  If you only let Womble re-encode audio at edit points (as opposed to fully re-encoding), you can get weird volume fluctuations at edit points.

Here's why: Stream copied ac3 leaves the dialog normalization level untouched.  Re-encoded segments have the normalization re-set to -31db (regardless of what you tell Womble to use as the audio source reference).

Is this the only reason why the received wisdom amongst Womble users was to check the re-encode the whole audio if any part needs re-encoding option?  I used to run into problems with players choking on DVDs made from files exported from Womble, so I always used to check this option, along with Gop size compliance for DVD recording and use CRC protection.

Although I haven't tested the update, I'm told that the dial. norm. bug has been fixed.  Incredibly, they just didn't know about it.

Um, yeah.

Is it possible that, instead of encoding to ac3, the output would be 6 (or 7, or 8) mono wav files?

[EDIT]: Having tried a lot to get it right, I just end up with an ac3 file with FL, FR, LFE and three empty channels. Something doesn't work here. I'm using the latest version of ffdshow...

[EDIT 2]: I got it. ac3filter needed some tinkering first...

Honestly, I've been on the fence with this.

Doom9's original guide (which is sadly out of date) outputs to mono wav files and then lets you re-encode with your software of choice.

The advantage is you can then do DTS or more modern flavors of encoding.  Also it wouldn't matter what version of ffdshow you are using.

Besides, I've got to assume that ffdshow's on the fly encoder can't be nearly as good quality as dedicated encoders.

I think I may write an appendix that explains that method.

Also, you shouldn't need ac3filter at all.

Welcome to the 'request a MySpleen invite' thread.  Sigh.

I understand 112 pages are a lot to read, but is it too much to ask people to read the first post (the one that says PM Dark_Jedi for an invite)?

TBH I haven't grabbed these yet (just haven't gotten around to it), but with the wave of one-post wonders popping in just to grab an invite has me feeling uncomfortable about d/l'ing anything from MySpleen anymore.

Sort of defeats the point of a private tracker.  I think I'll wait to find it on a different outlet now.

Ideas Wanted: for a ...Sucker Punch as a straight action movie edit -- SPOILERS
Time

No matter what angle I looked at this movie, I hated it.
It failed to work on any level, but the action scenes were cool.

Try taking your idea down a few notches.  I think you're expecting to be able do too much with too little.
Try just cutting the asylum bits and maybe the death scenes and then seeing if you can make it make sense from there.  IMHO cutting in bits from other films NEVER works in a fan edit.

If you really want to fix this movie, build a time machine, go back in time, smack Zach Snyder in the face, and tell him to do another draft.

The Aluminum Falcon: The method I was talking about there was described in detail on VideoHelp.com.

Supposedly it works great for some people, but after trying it on 3 stand alone plays, I had 3 failures.

I really don't recommend that method unless you know your play can do it and you don't intend to play the final DVD on anything else.

D_J is right about the better way to do it and how to handle the delay.
