Star Wars: Deleted Magic (Released)

Her eyes were hurting so she couldn't read "the notes" onscreen .... I wound up pausing the film a lot to explain to her about the guy who was originally cast as Wedge, about the violence that got cut out, about the Trench run, about the Wampa door and Luke and Leia kissing and Luke's blue saber in ROTJ and Blue Harvest and all that ...

Um, looks like I'm going to need a commentary myself. How about a 2nd audio track in the future?

Okay, this took longer than expected. I'm going to skip the torrent bit. I have a server running that should be able to handle the load for today. After that there should be plenty of seeds to torrent with:

May 19, 2005 George Lucas will be releasing what we can only hope will be
his final butchering of the great Star Wars legacy. In anticipation of the general
disappointment by the fan community, L4ndst4nder has already set things right.

Removing further midichlorian references, tightening up of edits, removal of slap-
stick-y antics, all alien and english dialog, and any scene with Hayden Christensen,
Jar Jar Binks, Natalie Portman, droids, and the character soon to be known as
General Grievous Mistake.

Opening crawl have been made less complicated and darker by their absence, and
some deleted scenes have remained deleted to keep the movie from getting too slow.

I hope you all enjoy.

Further news from TheDigitalBits.com

Next, we've followed up with our Universal sources and have now been told that director David Lynch's participation in the Dune: Extended Edition isn't a done deal yet. It IS the reason the title was delayed, but the details about Lynch's involvement are apparently still in discussion. So we're going to suggest that our previous post is best considered Rumor Mill-worthy for the time being, until things are more official. We've amended the earlier post accordingly. I don't want to get anyone's hopes too high, but I have to tell you mine are pretty well into the stratosphere at the moment. Let's all cross our fingers on this one, because Lynch's Dune ranks right up there with Ridley Scott's Blade Runner at the top of the list of films that most deserve revisiting by their directors on DVD. We'll keep you posted.

So we wait...

Actually, my real question is that I'm a bit unclear.

What are going to be the differences between your current version of DM and your final (or next) version?

Can't wait to see this, but I'd rather not watch another work in progress. I get mad enough at movie companies for their re-re-re-releases.

Also, rewatching the first 'cut' from the DM website I was reminded that some of the subtitles were on the screen too briefly, has that been fixed?

Talked yourself into it eh? I thought we were all talked out of it.

I'd at least wait to see what Lynch does, he may yet redeem the film. If nothing else we might see more footage in 16x9 and maybe some new/cleaned up effects shots.

I know Amazon does list a previously released 2 disc Theatrical/S.E. DVD as an import (probably Pan and Scan) if you're determined.

They will have "fmv window" style chapter select screens, and will generally work like a professional DVD even if the animation isn't quite as cool as say, the Lord of the Rings dvds, it will nonetheless not be static junk with text that looks like it was scribbled in poop by a 3 year old. I'm about halfway done with the menus for A New Hope.

Excuse me, I think I just drooled on my keyboard.

Honestly I've always liked David Lynch's version (preferred in the Smithee form), until I read the books. Then I had real problems with it.

The Sci-Fi channel miniseries IS close to my hearts, I have the expanded version on DVD and have seen it many times.
My real problems with it are:
The painted back drops make it look like a stage production.
Fayd will ALWAY be Sting to me.
It doesn't have Patrick Stewart, Dean Stockwell, Kyle MacLchlan or that score by Toto, need I go on?
No face masks or anything on the stillsuits (is that a nitpick?)
Ok, and Paul was never called Ussle (sp?)

I thought the Miniseries did a great job visually on the whole, with nice effects (compared to the dated original), and was excellent for sticking with the story.

The real bummer was I felt the follow up series was soft. I can understand cast changes, but I couldn't handle costume and effects changes, you need to keep uniformity.

So neither is perfect and I do love both versions for their own strengths.

Anyway, the point is really that David Lynch isn't bothering to do the much needed work on his movie. With an estimated 4-5 hour original run time, you KNOW he meant to do more if he hadn't got turned off to the project.

I think that's the question on everyone's mind... is there an ETA?

Originally set with a May 10th release date, a U.S. release (depending on the source either 2 disc or DVD18) with both the theatrical and the extended versions
Dune Extended Edition (@ Amazon) is in the works.

Anamorphic, DD (some sources say DTS as well), Never-before-seen footage of the film including fight scenes and an alternate ending.

That's just a trove for an editor...

Actually, I rewatched an old VHS from SciFi channel of this yesterday (Alan Smithee version). I didn't realize how integrated the stupid Weirding module is, and killing with a word and all that crap.

It would damn hard to pull off the epic battle scenes since all the Fremen are using them.

Ok, maybe I'll just try to make myself like the Sci-Fi channel miniseries a bit more.
