I’d much prefer the alternate take people have done (sorry been too long … was it Dominic?) that has Rey NOT saying Skywalker and “just Rey.” The “Skywalker” Saga is over and she’s doing her own thing.

I think it was poppasketti who did the work on it. But agreed. I personally also would cut the Ghosts from Tatooine. She’s just Rey. That’s it. If, for canon reasons she calls herself Skywalker later, we can pretend it’s for paperwork reasons. Like Han :p

It you’re going for “whole Skywalker family” why not add Shmii and Padme? I mean this sort of seriously, because Anakin has as much importance to Rey as Shmii or Padme would, and everyone else got the Skywalker name from Shmii. In an edit that keeps the Force Ghosts AND keeps Ben alive & convincingly adds him to Tatooine then I would be on board with Anakin being present. I just don’t see his presence being necessary otherwise, as annoyed as I was that he wasn’t in the ST at all.

I’m curious how your “Ben Lives” change will look in the final cut. Is it simply that we don’t see Ben die or is going to integrated into the final scenes in any way?

Since the Anakin/Ben convo will be the final Ben scene, it works fairly well to leave it up to the viewer as to what happens after. I’d love to have Ben show up on Tatooine, but I kinda like the open ended nature of his Kef Bir/Endor scene.

How are you planning to create the needed lines (video and audio) for the conversation between Kylo and Anakin?

For Ben someone made me the needed line using an AI voice synthesizer, and for Anakin I found a voice actor who does voice work that sounds like Hayden. It’s really excellent stuff.

The Anakin footage is from RotS, but ghostified. It’s not perfect, but it works and I like what it brings to the scene more than I’m worried that Ben’s line of sight doesn’t match where Anakin is for one shot.

Love a lot of these ideas, and especially agree with the title 😉 . Wondering how you’re going to pull off the Anakin content? Where are you getting that footage from that makes it look like an actual part of the movie?

Thanks! A number of my ideas were inspired by what I liked about your edits. And the title, well there really is no other option imo.

For V1 I’m starting with some mockups that some VFX artists did you can find on YouTube. I’m not too concerned about it looking 100% perfect for V1, but for V2… we’ll see.

Legacy of the Force - A WIP Rise of Skywalker edit

Yes. I’ve started planning out my changes to TFA and TLJ which will be based on HAL and Acbagel’s edits.

But I decided to start with this one cus I watched joshuabri’s No Palps edit and it kinda made me love the movie. So the goal of this edit is to build out the No Palps idea with elements like Rey killing her Parents (while also giving Anakin a meaningful moment in the ST) and then go back to 7 & 8 and adjust elements that ape the OT too closely or just make them feel like they go nowhere.

So in my TFA Starkiller base won’t be a weapon, the New Republic won’t be destroyed, and Han will have left Leia after Ben fell, not because smuggling was so irresistible.

My TLJ will have a Luke who is less despondent. He still despises the Jedi and wants them gone, but for legitimate reasons besides his own personal failure. Better pacing, better use of Finn and Rose, etc…

All to build to a RoS where the conflicts are between Ren, Rey and her fear of the Dark and the First Order and the Resistance. The fleet that shows during the final battle will be implied to be, at least partly, a Republic fleet. Which becomes a payoff from their lack of help in the other 2 films.

This helps it all flow and let’s the stakes build realistically, imo. We don’t go from a single weapon that can destroy star systems, to death star battering ram cannons, to a fleet of canon loaded destroyers. Now the first we’ll see of the new death star-based tech will be in TLJ and it won’t see mass use until the deployment of Snoke’s Exogol fleet, the Final Order.

I’m excited about what I put together for my edit’s new opening.

I decided to start with the amazing shots of Ren on Coruscant with some VO of Snoke that sets Ren on his search for the Wayfinder and Exogol.

Once there as he’s searching the room that normally has Palps in it, he’s thrust into a vision sequence (the Force of Darkness fanfilm) and we hear Snoke saying “The last test” and once Ren kills Vader in the vision Snoke says “The Potential of Your Bloodline. A New Vader.”

And then it cuts to the fleet rising from Exogol with Snoke saying “Fulfill your Destiny.”
Then we cut to a (not destroyed) Starkiller base where Hux gives his “Last Day of The Republic” speech and then there’s a shot of a Star Destroyer + canon arriving over a planet.

Aaaand THEN we cut to Rey meditating.

It helps slow the pace some, keeps the focus on this trilogy’s established characters, implies Snoke knew about Exogol/always planned on using it, and ensures the First Order feels like a threat from the get go.

My issue with your interpretation of Rey in this film is at least partly connected to what you had Luke trying to teach her in FotJ. My idea would be to try and get it across that by the end she’s learned that lesson of internal balance.

The film already contains external manifestation that she’s trying to achieve it, she heals the serpent, followed by using Force Lightning. She wants to take Ren’s hand, but goes to her friends instead. She mortally stabs Ben, then heals him. Her issue is that she’s struggling and I would rather see her work through that struggle and come out ready to build a new order of Force users that isn’t Jedi or Sith, than die because she’s a failure.

It could be accomplished with two pretty simple changes to the Exogol confrontation and two during the finale.

  1. When Rey says she’s here to end the Sith and Palpatine asks “As a Jedi?” change her “Yes” to a “No.” and edit Palps next line accordingly.

  2. Then cut the Jedi from the sequence completely.

  3. Show Rey’s friends on the Falcon with her as it goes to Tatooine.

  4. When Rey is burying the past on Tatooine, cut the Force Ghosts and have her say “Just Rey” instead of “Rey Skywalker.”

With the changes you made for FotJ, plus the theatrical’s concept of Rey confronting her fear, this gives the very clear impression that she’s trying to move beyond the failures of the Jedi, and by the end has succeeded. She’s supposed to be the one who has resolved the Grey through refined Jedi sight, as referenced in the TFA novelisation’s Book of the Whills quote.

However it’s your edit, and those are just my thoughts on resolving Rey’s story.

As for Ben, I’d leave him on Tatooine at the end.

Since you’re talking about lightning, part of how I’ve seen that scene playing out is that when Rey is blasting the lightning back at Sidious the reason it kills him is she’s feeding her power into the lightning. So I’ve always wanted THAT lightning to be yellow.

That would be a lot though, red and yellow lightning…

Anyway, live the red lightning idea.

RL, what do you think about this as a crawl idea for TFA?

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
Led by the Sith Cultist Snoke
the FIRST ORDER has risen
from the ashes of the Empire
and will not rest until Skywalker,
the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

To maintain peace the New
Re and First Order have
signed a treaty of non-interference.
General Leia Organa
leads a brave RESISTANCE
against the new threat.

Desperate to find her
brother, Leia has sent her most
daring forces to search for Luke
on JAKKU, where scavengers and
brigands ransack the remnants
of the old war….

For one, it’s a major way the film apes ANH, but on a more ridiculous scale.
Second, it has no emotional impact. Just adding in the deleted scene of Leia’s messenger being sent there doesn’t do enough to give the audience an emotional anchor. And again, it has no bearing on the later films. The only reference to the NR destruction in TLJ is the crawl and a Hux line toward the beginning. With the NR still intact throughout 8 & 9, the lack of response from allies can be recontexualised by either editing or the viewer as the NR continuing to not help. And the arrival of the fleet over Exogol in RoS could be contextualized as the NR finally sending aid.

And finally, I think the destruction of the NR was a very shallow way that the writers were signaling that they weren’t going to be beholden to Legends material, since the NR plays a not insignificant role in Legends. They then of course still borrowed the concepts of Jacen Solo, a hidden fleet, force clones, and Palpatine’s return… I just really feel like it’s useless and goes nowhere.

Personally I think removing the Super Weapon concept at all, if possible, is ideal. Starkiller would just be a FO base that they assault to rescue Rey and because they might have a chance at killing Ren and Hux. Idk…
