To add yet another meaningless opinion to the thread: any and all DNR work should be an after thought, IMO. Its existence wouldn’t keep me from watching the raw version, so I don’t care if one is made, but if working on a DNR version would hinder any ability to sooner finish the standard raw versions of all three films, I think it should sit on the shelf as long as it needs to. And from the looks of things, most of the film, regardless of Tech or Eastman source, is probably going to look well managed enough for everyone here to enjoy anyway, even if it gets a little chunky in some Tunisia shots or composited shots.

Anyway, the point is, as long as I (and other grain lovers) can still watch a finished 1080p version with zero DNR done, then I’m sure we’ll all be really happy with your wonderful work of love. I’d also just like to thank you, Williarob and DrDre (and everyone else involved in all this); it’s gonna be great!

Evil Dead II (1987) – ★★★1/2

Loved it again!

I was a little disappointed though, because it felt slightly less coherent than the first film, and it didn’t build an atmosphere about itself as well as the first film did either. I read and hear about how it’s the perfect blend of horror and comedy, and I would have to agree for the most part, but I didn’t feel it was quite there all the time.

I also felt that the opening sequence (not the narrated segment with the title card, but the recap afterwards) hindered the film. It was a little too abridged, and felt like the least coherent and most rushed part of the film. If they didn’t want to create a less-abridged remake for a recap, why didn’t they use further narration, or just do it without a recap at all and just cut into the film on the first-person-view shot rushing up to Ash in the morning, since that’s where the new story begins anyway.

Aside from my nitpicks, though, I really enjoyed it, and now I can’t watch Army of Darkness for a while because I can’t afford it yet. *sigh*

The Evil Dead (1981) – ★★★1/2

I loved it quite a lot.

Spoiler area, I suppose:

I was liking it throughout the beginning of the film; it built atmosphere very well.

When it came to the plant-rape scene, I just felt very disturbed, and though it was an effective scene, I felt like it went on a little too long. I mean, listening to a woman scream and pant just becomes disturbing in a not-so-scary way after a little bit.

I think the film is at its best from when Ash cuts off Linda’s head to him being attacked by Scott. As the evil spirits mess with him, and he continues this descent into madness, it’s hard to tell what’s happening to him and what’s just him going insane.

I can’t wait to watch Evil Dead II now. I think the idea of it being horror-comedy rather than straight horror will fare well for it. I’ll have to wait till Friday to watch that, though.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

On Halloween, I ordered The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II because I’ve never seen the Evil Dead films before, and II came in the mail today (they were shipped separately).

Well, my dad found out that I had Evil Dead II, and to my surprise, he freaked out. In hindsight, it actually isn’t that surprising, since he has always been unreasonable when it comes to entertainment standards for people who aren’t himself, but I simply wasn’t expecting it at the time. So, he took the disc from me. Now I’ll have to find out where he put it and hide it somewhere myself. It’s just so annoying to have to deal with this crap.

I’m 17, I spend half of my days on a computer/television, and I purchased a film that I was interested in watching with my own money. Does he really think that I haven’t already seen whatever it is he disapproves of in there? And he gave the whole “you’re not watching that in my house on anything I own” speech, but who says I was going to watch it at home? I mean, I would have watched them at home sometime, but that’s not my point. It really killed the mood after we finished watching The Iron Giant, too.

It’s also kind of a bummer that I won’t be able to afford Scream Factory’s Army of Darkness release until around Christmas, so I’ll probably end up waiting a little while after watching Evil Dead II, but I suppose I can live with that.

The Iron Giant (1999) – ★★★★

I love this film. After having ordered the Signature Edition Blu-ray (not the collector’s box, though; way too expensive), I watched this film for the first time in years, along with the rest of my family. I didn’t put on the Signature Edition, but rather opted for the theatrical version that we know and love; this is because I’ve already looked up what the two new scenes are, and they are as follows:

Spoilers.

The first is just a brief conversation between Dean and Hogarth’s mother in the diner. It really doesn’t have much
purpose.

The second is the Giant’s dream sequence, that occurs during the night while he is sleeping in Dean’s junk yard.
It consists of visions of space, exploding planets, and several Iron Giants walking across lands in full battle
mode destroying things. It’s a massive spoiler, it ruins the pacing, build up, and reveal of the whole film.
It effectively ruins the film (for anyone who hasn’t seen it before, obviously).

So, I really wasn’t interested in putting that on. Anyway, if you’ve never seen it before, I highly recommend checking it out sometime, and don’t watch the “Signature Edition” version.

DrDre, the video sample you posted is not nearly as good looking as those previous screenshots. The “final grading” feels way too orange/pink overall, and removes the slight mint-green feel that I think is almost essential.

Ha ha you all think your really cute. You must think your really Superior huh. Here i am just asking a simple question and all you do is criticize me. your horrible star wars fans treating other fans like that what did i ever do to you guys sorry for living sheesh jerks.

I wasn’t criticizing you at all. That was a completely honest post, and Dreamaster’s post was also completely honest as far as I can tell. Everyone who has posted since Dre put up his video preview seems to agree that it doesn’t look very good.

Oh man! This is so cool!

I do think this is a big step up from the SSE. This is much shaper (the Eastman prints are perhaps even sharper than the Technicolor), more detailed, will have more consistant colors, and won’t have any of that light streaking that our scan of the LPP had. If I had to put a number on it, I’d say 75% better than the SSE at 1080p.

DrDre said:

Well, I’m sold. This will most likely be my favourite version of Star Wars upon it’s supposedly eventual 1080p release.

Thank you, Williarob and DrDre. You guys are doing great things.

Alien (1979) – 4/4

I love this film. It’s so wonderfully atmospheric, and the cast is amazing.

My only gripe with it is the jump-cut shot from fake Ian Holm head to actual Ian Holm head. They really could’ve done a better job of that if they just bridged it with a different shot in between. But that doesn’t really matter, it doesn’t distract much at all.
