Info Wanted: Do I Have The Best OT Preservation DVDs out there?

No, because it's not true to the original. There are shots on that disc that were modified for the 2004 SE, and they weren't replaced with the original video.

According to the people that released it on MySpleen, all of the Special Edition shots in all 3 movies were deleted. Replaced with the original video from the LD rips.

They're wrong. All of the SE shots were not deleted. I'm sure others can provide you with examples. The most glaring is an SE shot in the Battle of Yavin.

Now this comment I can't wrap my head around. First of all the OT isn't going to be $18 next month. That's just for 1 of them. So you're looking at over $50 for the entire OT, since Lucas is forcing you to buy the SE versions as well. On top of that, the video quality has been confirmed by LucasFilms themselves as being no better than anything you can find from what has been released here. No thanks.

Sorry I was wrong about the price- I thought you were just talking about Star Wars. But your comment about the video quality is patently untrue. The September DVD's will blow the other preservations out of the water, except for the XO project. Possibly.

No, because it's not true to the original. There are shots on that disc that were modified for the 2004 SE, and they weren't replaced with the original video. And the colors are screwed up. And the encoding is pretty lousy (I don't know about Empire and Jedi, though).

So I'd say no- pick up the official DVD for $18 next month, which contains the actual original movie.

Info Wanted: Did anyone do a preservation of the 'Behind the Magic' DVD?
Time

I was just wondering if anyone did this- put all of the stuff on the 2-disc Behind the Magic set onto a DVD, with the DVD menus exactly the same as on the CD’s. If not, that would be an awesome project for someone smarter than I am

It would probably take too much time, though. There’d be so much involved.

The Film Industry
Time
I thought this would be a good topic for discussion:

How would a film director get into the industry, and somehow get into a position where he's in complete control of what he's doing (cinematography, music, and so forth) and actually start making great movies again. I know that popular taste has changed and all, and that movies have been seriously dumbed down lately. But how do you get into the position to make something radically different?

I'm talking about Alfred Hitchcock/ 70's Spielberg type stuff. Stuff that's indisputably great without resorting to popular taste or stupidity. Is it even possible to make movies like this any more? I think we're due for a renaissance.

Star Wars CD Cover Art Thread

I think the guy had done a generic set (ie. could be used with any preservation effort or even the retail discs), a set for the splitscreen trilogy and one for Deleted Magic. The generic ones imitated the style of the crawls, with yellow text on a black starry background. They were pretty cool. Have a look in the cover art thread and the torrent and if you can't find 'em within the next few days I'll try and find them on my discs and upload them for you.

Cool- that sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. thanks!

Star Wars CD Cover Art Thread
Time
I was just curious about something- has anyone made any covers for any of the projects and fan edits that are out there- for CD cases instead of the full-blown DVD cases? For someone with a lot of discs and not as much room, this would be great and it'd conserve a lot more space. I'm looking specifically for covers for the split-screen trilogy, MagnoliaFan edits, ADigitalMan edits, and Deleted Magic.

I just wondered if this had ocurred to anyone else, or if anyone else had a need for this. I mean, the full blown DVD covers are nice, but you have to buy cases, buy the photo paper, etc. And it takes a lot of ink as well.

Thanks!

Why LFL is actually cool (I know we need some reasons right now)...
Time
i bought the Behind the Magic set, and it was one of the best purchases I ever made. I was fascinated with the cantina sequence from the lost cut, Greedo with a British accent, etc.

Unfortunately, for some reason it doesn't play on my machine ever since we switched to XP. Did anyone do a fan preservation of this? Replicating all the menus and everything?

This would make an INCREDIBLE fan preservation disc.

Saber fighting as kids....
Time
I thought it'd be cool to have a thread to find out... how many of you guys played with those Hasbro lightsabers they used to make, when you were kids (if you're that young).

I used to duel constantly with my brother (and friends occasionally), sometimes choreographing it and sometimes not. My brother would always provide the lightsaber noises

The "original crawl" on the new DVD is NOT the original crawl! Screenshot inside!

Okay just saw the trailer for the OOT DVD. They showed a clip of the new DVD "original crawl". I was looking to see if it was truely the original crawl, if it was formatted correctly. Mysetriously, the clip on the trailer cuts off just as it is about the get to the first line formatted, which is the third line in. Uh oh. What are they hiding?

Then I took a closer look at the screenshot. "The Star Wars logo looks funny--shouldn't it have receeded by now??"

Sure enough, i took a look at the Empire of Dreams original crawl footage--it is not the same.

THE UPCOMING OOT DVD CRAWL IS JUST A PHOTOSHOPED VERSION OF THE EPISODE IV CRAWL. And, 1. how do you know the empire of dreams has the original version? 2. How do you know that there weren't 3 slightly differently formatted crawls for the 3 theatrical versions? Did you know that when creating the opening crawl it would have been composited together? Therefore isn't it reasonable to assume that they would do this composite each time they made a theatrical master? And as they had to make 3 different masters, there could be 3 slightly different versions? And so in doing so isn't it reasonable to think that in some instances the SW logo will be more faded faster then in other instances?

There is no solid evidence that this is a recreated crawl. Also the percieved difference could be due a simple difference in cropping (though by looking at the stars it does appear this is not the case)
.
Stop jumping to early conclusions and complaining about every grain.

No offense, but you don't know what the hell you're talking about. The Star Wars logo in '77 wasn't "more faded faster" in one release as opposed to others. The 3 theatrical versions were exactly the same in terms of video.

And we're not talking about a "simple difference in cropping".

Therefore isn't it reasonable to assume that they would do this composite each time they made a theatrical master?

Absolutely not. You really shouldn't assume...

Vertigo mono track (Released)
Time

I’m a big, big fan of the movie “Vertigo”. And I got this DVD after it came out: Vertigo

This release had a new audio remix, with new, loud sound effects. It wasn’t the movie Hitchcock made, however similar. Then I find out that they finally released it with the mono track, but it’s packaged in an $85 dollar set (Masterpiece Collection), and most of the movies in it are already in my collection. I already bought the movie, anyway.

Pirates of the Caribbean Two

I have to go against the crowd on this one, and say that I thought POTC II was a complete dud. They missed everything that was great about the first one- even Depp's performance felt canned somehow. The whole CG Davy Jones thing was silly, especially the CG hammerhead guy. The whole thing with the heart was ridiculous. There wasn't much of a plot, and it seemed like it was playing down to 11 year olds this time around. There was no subtlety whatsoever of the first film. No sense of pacing at all; it dragged and dragged. I couldn't understand a word the fortune-teller was saying. And it was just mindless CGI and action without any reason or suspense.

The first one was pretty good, but POTC II made it look like Raiders of the Lost Ark. I for one was very disappointed.

What I heard is that Kershner not working on ROTJ was a mutual decision because Lucas wanted more control over the movies, and Kershner was displeased with the lack of freedom as a director on Empire.

And yes, I also heard Lucas was irritated with Kershner going over-budget.

Where is that quote where Lucas says something like, Kershner went in a different direction than I wanted, or that he ruined his movie. It's not really a well-known quote, but I remember it...
