Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I was thinking about the unzoomed cockpit shots. Could you combine elements so that the vast majority of the frame was blu ray footage and only the edges were GOUT or, eventually, the 35mm scan? You've done similar in-image splicing before with the Mos Eisley flythrough. And in this case the viewer's eyes are naturally drawn toward the centre of the frame so they're not likely to notice the edges.

Oh wow, the moment I downloaded the AVCHD is the moment I learned that all of my blank DVD-Rs just won't write anymore. My disc drive won't even recognize them. In any case, I was able to extract the video file and it looks great, and it's reassuring knowing the MKV will look even better. God, the revised Cloud City walkthroughs look so crisp. Great work, Harmy!

Guys, it's .002% of the picture. Not that rounded corners normally matter, but in comparatively brief clips where your attention is focused on literally every other part of the frame, they matter even less.

Complaining about that is the saddest Goddamn thing. Just crop that .002% when v2.0 comes out. Or just, you know, rethink your priorities in life.

If we're going to start altering the film to recreate the original theater going experience why not lose some of the clarity of the picture and add in dirt and scratches to more closely approximate a print of the film that's been running in the theater for a while?

Dude, he's trying to recreate the film as it was shown in theatres in 1980, not some print that's been lying on a shelf for over three decades.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)

I don't want to pile on, but this is getting a little too ridiculous. Is there a reason you guys can't upload to a higher quality video streaming site like Vimeo? Or do what Harmy does and put up chunks of uncompressed video for download?

I imagine you guys are doing a bang-up job restoring this, and you've proven this before with the Mos Eisley bits for Star Wars Despecialized, but the current quality you're showing us is comparable to a Twitch stream.

The bottom line is I was expecting pen marks, dirt, hair, splice marks, reel changes etc.... Bottom line is this is years and years old, I expect a terrible shape.

Someone took care of this.

I have a 35 mm in the can of the THING and the color is very washed out after sitting in the cans

Seconded. My local theatre shows a 35mm print of the Director's Cut of Alien that looks worse than this, and it's only from 2003.

In place of "crappy", I would probably use degraded.  In place of "a highly manipulated" I might use "an offensively decorated" (referring to the cheesy CG junk).  That might sound more professional--and more insulting to the SE.

Sorry, just thought I'd throw my two bits in.

But in that case you're just including another unprofessional-sounding remark. "Highly manipulated" is more objective and more fitting of a professionally done documentary.

Hey Harmy, seeing as you'll likely be getting a lot of the despecialized footage from Team Negative1's 35mm scan next time around, how do you think you'll handle things like Anakin's eyebrows or, in the case of ESB, Lando's lips? Will you transpose those elements from the newer sources or will you replace the entire face or frame instead?
