Info: Superman II Donner, and III & IV extended edits
Time
I also think the best edit would be a hybrid, without Superman turning the earth around, and with Lois remembering at the end. If people want to take the next two into account, that probably wouldn't be the right editI, but I think with this kind of end, it would truly be the two part epic originally conceived. I'm wondering why Lester's ending with the kiss wasn't left in the Donner cut. After all, he was trying to come up with a new ending upon his sacking, so he probably would have come to an ending similar to that.

I think that Singer had a very difficult job on his hands, and handeled it about as well as he could have. For one, the movie had the task of not being a franchise reboot, but more of a "Superman 5" film. But if it were to directly continue from the eighties films, then there would be lots of people having trouble getting it, because lots of people who had never seen a Superman film would be watching this. So the charecter had to be reintroduced to the world. But it also had to be a follow up. To me, that seems like a hard job. I think going down the homage route was a good choice. Those scenes from the original movie introduced the world to Superman very well, so if it had to be done again, why not update them? Obviously, it would have been more original and probably more enjoyable to have a totally new movie, with a few little homages here and there, but when you have the job of re-introducing the charecter AND making a follow up, I think they did a very good job. And now with that out of the way, I think the next movie can be totally kick ass, one of the best Superman movies yet, as long as its original.

What versions of the SW saga do you own (OT, PT, preservations, etc)?
Time
Boy....some of you have very impressive collections. Here's mine.

Star Wars 9/12 Release Tin:
Includes the three films' "bonus disc" with theatrical versions. I've also inserted Musical Journey in the SW case and the 2004 Bonus Disc in the ROTJ case. Might try to get myself a copy of Building Empire to go in the ESB case. The 2004 versions are not present.

I've also got the three prequels.

I've also had the trilogy on VHS, then the 2004 set. Sold the VHS in 2004, gave the 2004 DVD's to my cousins in 2006.

So Lucas could undermine the OOT even furthur. He could easily have left the "Disc One" title off there. That's the only differance. Even a retard would figure out which one is which. But it HAD to say Disc One so that people would know what disc was more important.

ANH screening with modelmaker Lorne Peterson...WHY ARE THEY SCREENING THE SE??

I'll go with this one as the best analogy to the SE screening to honor the model work.

Some of Sebastian Shaw's performance was eliminated. And what remains was tinkered with. Hey, his eyebrow movements were part of his performance.

Clive has nothing left in ESB. And Prowse never participated in ROTS.

Absolutely. Sabastian Shaw had a short, but excellent and moving preformence. Tweaking his face with CGI alters his preformence. Eliminating him completely from the final scene shows that Lucas had no respect for the man.

But honestly, I think Lucas doesn't have respect for anyone that worked on any of his movies. The best movies are big collaberations where lots of people with lots of talents do thier best to bring a collective vision to the screen. Lucas's vision was the main vision for Star Wars (1977) but lots of other people had visions that went into it. Ralph McQuarrie's artwork fueled much of the modelwork and charecter design. The modelmakers themselves had a huge vision that they brought to the screen. But once the film is done, Lucas just selfishley says, "It's mine. I can do what I want with it. My precious..." and does whatever he wants with it.

I recently purchased the Peter Jackson's Kind Kong extended edition and watched the 3 hour documentary on making the film. It was a huge, great collaberation, and as much as the crew praises Jackson, Jackson prasies the crew moreso. It's the same on his LOTR documentaries. Jackson is obviously proud to have had that kind of collaberation, proud that he was part of it, and constantly thanks everyone for making such a great movie.

But when I watch Star Wars documentaries like Empire of Dreams, I see interviews edited down to just praising Lucas, and Lucas praising no one but himself and the "saga." I get the aura of a slave owner from him, like he just expects all his cast and crew to just do whatever he expects, and he doesn't have to mention them when talking about the final outcome of the films. Jackson's documentaries have tons of footage of other people, cast and crew, talknig about thier parts, obviously not as much as him (he's the director; more time to film later for documentary) but everyone gets a fair share of on screen time to show everyone thier part of the film. Where's the Star Wars documentary where we see modelmakers showing how they achieved it? Where are editors talking about how they edited it? Where's cameraman talking about the tough shots and how he accomplished them?

Lucas takes his films when thier done, and from that point on, they are his and no one else's and he can do whatever he wants to them. A director has that right on paper, but morally, directors need to share their films, and their success, with their crew. It's sad, because Lucas wasn't always like this. Back when the movies first came out, he didn't claim the films to be soley his own. But its so different now. Empire of Dreams even says Lucas wrote the script for ESB. It doesn't even mention the real screenwriters! That has got to be one of the greatest injustices.

I think its lucky Peterson is even getting to do this book...it was probably edited by Lucasfilm to add Lucas praise every other sentance.

Glad you are back Darth_Evil.

Nice to see you too.

How can you say that replacing his shots with CG does not take away from his work? Of course it does. If tommorrow, someone went into Lord of the Rings and rewrote a few passages, does that take away from Tolkein's work? Gaffer Tape is right about it only being in a few scenarios, but even one would be an insult to most people, I think. But like I said earlier, we don't know how he feels. But it is safe to bank that he didn't like his work being replaced by CGI. I'd have to agree with Number20 on this. This is probably him trying to sell his book, and not wanting to affend Lucas.

I know I would not even do this event if they were screening the SE. I've made some home movies using stop motion, and if tomorrow someone came in and redid half of it with CGI, then asked me to talk about the film in front of a crowd, but only screen the CGI version, like hell I'd do it. Get it Gomer? There's no earthly way he can be happy about this, and if he is, then he's nuts. But there's no way of knowing, so its a total moot point anyway.

Yup. I've been eagerly awaiting this perfect set all year, and when I heard this I was dismayed. But Warner is really stepping up to the plate on this one. Not just replacing the discs, but admitting they made a mistake. George wouldn't be looked upon in the same view if he could just step up to the plate and admit it, saying "My Bad...sorry." I really respect Warner for this.

Has technology accelerated that much?
Time
It is definately amazing how far technology has advanced in the last 20 years. Hell, in the last 10 years its amazing. In 1996, DVD was not big at all. VHS was the video format, but 10 years later, VHS is completely dead. DVD is at its peak and hi-def is coming onto the field. It's amazing the video quality we see nowadays. If I went back 10 years ago and showed someone a DVD, they'd probably think they were high or something. But the most shocking thing would be that we would be acheiving it in 10 years.

The new Star Wars DVD's aren't horrible, in fact, I enjoy them a lot and am perfectly satisfied with them. Does that mean they are state of the art? Not even close. We should be getting a brilliant hi-def master with a remastering fit for a film like Star Wars.

Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...
Time
This really sucks. I read the news the other day on The Digital Bits and I almost didn't believe it, mostly because I didn't want to believe it. I think this is comparable to the Salkands firing Donner on Superman 2. The Hobbit just shouldn't be made at all if Jackson doesn't direct. I don't think it would even be accepted. If it is made without Jackson, the only way I'll be going into the theater is if McKellen and Holm return in thier roles.

Yeah, I bought the Tin for 60 bucks. Now I feel totally ripped off...oh well. The family is leaving on a road trip Thursday, so I think I'll be missing out on the Black Friday sales anyway. Don't you just hate it when life does that?

And I'd laugh my ass off if Best Buy announced tomorrow that they were dropping the price of the PS3 to 300 dollars for a day. LOL....People would still be paying 3000 online anyway...

This is fucking ridiculous.

I'm done with it.

JamesEight, you are an asshole and a moron. I don't need to go into a rambling explanation about it, because his posts speak for themselves. I can say whatever I want, but he will just keep saying the same things, that I have no reason for hating Gomer. I gave him reasons. Not good enough. What a hypocrite. He will go against anyone against Gomer, and then bash people for doing the same thing on the other side of the camp.

Gomer, you are a troll that has completely ruined being on the forums. I can't believe the mods haven't gotten rid of you. It's ridiculous. The mods have closed many a thread for getting off topic, but for some reason they don't ban someone who purposefully derails threads. Quite frankly, it baffles me.

I'm leaving. I'm not coming back to the General Discussion thread again, until maybe one day all this is cleared up. You might see me from time to time on the Fan edit boards. If you wish to contact me, I will check my PM's from time to time. I will not be giving out my e-mail adress, unless someone PM's me and wants it, and I trust them. To all who I got along with here, I hope you know it was a great few months on the forums. Despite some of its members, its still the best forum on the net, IMHO. I'm sad to go, but I can't stand this anymore. Like I said, if this all clears up, I'll come back to this board again. Until then, Adios Amigos.

Yeah....whatever. I've actually made lots of good points about this.

Yea? Where? All I've seen you do is talk about what a BANE ON THE UNIVERSE'S ASS that Go-Mer is and say you want to keep making topics about him in order to get him banned. That's a "good point" only to six-year-old boys.

I've said many times, he's not a troll for having different opinions, but for derailing every thread to that topic and shoving his opinions on everyone.

Except that he doesn't. That's just your unsubstantiated fantasy. I've pointed out many topics that Go-Mer hasn't derailed or spammed even though they would be PERFECT targets for him, and Go-Mer has pointed out even more such topics. Yet you just casually ignore this.

I am not the kind of guy that bashes people for having different opinions on things like movies.

Except that that's exactly what you're doing while at the same time pretending you're not.

Why do I even bother? Go-Mer has facts on his side. I have facts on mine. You have nothing except yourself and a bunch of people who are willing to agree with you out of hand simply because they don't like different opinions. Me and Go-Mer have presented facts again and again that show your general interpretation of him to be flawed (if not outright wrong) but you never listen. All you do is say, "shut up Go-Mer" again and again. That, if anything, is proof that it is YOU and those like you who are unwilling to listen.

So there's no point to this discussion at all.

For once, we agree on something.
By any chance...are you Gomer's doppelganger that flames people? It seems like a likely conclusion with that post.

FYI, it's lame and makes you look foolish to take someone's whole post and analyze it sentance by sentance. \

Figure out the facts before you judge others. Here's an excerpt from another post of mine about Gomer.

Originally posted by: Darth_Evil

If anyone watches South Park, you might remember a very funny epsiode called "All About Mormons." In it, Stan meets the new kid on the block, who is mormon. He goes over to the family's house for dinner, and they are all cheery and laid back and no matter what anyone ever says to them, it bounces right off. They act all passive and happy to make people belive in mormonism (which is the stupidest religion on earth next to scientology.) At the end of the episode, Stan stops being friends with the mormon kid, and the kid tells Stan how great it is to be Mormon and that he has all he ever wants, but Stan can go suck his balls. The other kids think that the mormon kid is cool. So, basically the mormon family is getting South Park to convert to mormonism just by flaunting it all over the place, not telling people to be mormons or being mean to them because they are mormons.

Sound a bit like Go-Mer, doesn't it?

Go-Mer, you have not once told someone off for being an OOT fan, or not liking the prequels. But every time we express our views, you flaunt your love of all things Lucas in our face, just like the mormon family on south park. And then you try and say everyone should be able to have the best version of version of the film they prefer. But you don't really believe it. You're just trying to convert us by acting all calm and cool and trying to make us think being a "saga" fan will make us all happy and cool.

If you still don't get it, Go-Mer just pretends to care about the OOT preservation. He acts like he's on our side, while at the other time singing the praises of Lucas. These things totally contradict each other, and he tries to pass that off by saying he respects everyone's opinions. And he's never outright put down someone for liking the OOT, but that is his strategy. And with each and every last post he makes he is proving my point.

THIS IS TROLLING. The only possible way you cannot see this is if you are actually Gomer's doppelganger, like I suggested above. No one on this board is bashing Gomer simply because he has different opinions then me. I want him gone for my reasoning in the above excerpt, and for facts that others have brought up. He has gotten rid of the fun of this site. It used to be a laid back place with everyone getting along for the most part, and where we could chat with people sharing our views. Yes, I do get annoyed with Gomer having different views. But I can tolerate it if he would just be a normal member, instead of posting 24/7 and trolling like he is. I liked this site much better when everyone was on the same page.

And have you noticed that I'm not the only one expressing dislike for him? Why don't you flame the others disliking him. Why not do that? Do the others have longer posts, thus, better points? Well if this post isn't long enough for you, then I don't know what is.

You're acting totally childish, singling me out and flaming me, when at least twenty other posters have expressed similar contempt on this thread alone.

Gomer, there are two things I think you are missing the point on SW message boards:

1. Thinking George Lucas reads this shit. If you are here to defend ol Georgie cause you think it will hurt our cause, I think you are wasting your time. George Lucas doesn't read message boards, nor do 90% of SW fans either. I am the only one of my SW friends who post on message boards, and they think I am a little wacky for talking about movies that essentially done with via May 2005. They have moved on and just love what they love of the SW universe, and sure we still talk and analyze, but that is all it is. What we say here has no barring on whether the O-OT will be anamorphic next time, cause I find it very hard that George Lucas clicks on TFN & OT.com every night and thinks, "What are they saying about me now?"

Most artists or athletes or even actors, don't read this stuff for a reason, they don't want to know. I live in an area with a very popular sports talk radio and all day it is constant bitching and whining by callers on whether my sports team suck or not. And numerous athletes have said in interviews that they don't listen cause they just don't want to hear it. The reason the O-OT got put on DVD was partly cause of this site, but not the message board part, but just the petition and letters and emails the fans wrote in during the years, and Lucas finally gave in. Superman II (Donnor Cut) is coming out on DVD in 2 weeks because of the same campaign by fans who always wanted it, but not because the Superman Message Boards said, "Fuck Richard Lester, we want the Donnor cut!!!!"

2. Changing Peoples Opinion- I hate to break it to ya Gomer, you aint changin anyones opinion. People have their views of the 6 movies, and I have rarely seen someone do a 180 after an explanation and say, "You're right, TPM is great!"

The PT are movies just like anyone else, and it comes down to whether you like them or not, and no new defending of Lucas or rationalizing the turn is going to convince anyone now, the movies are over with, everyone has watched them once or a couple of times, or even 10 times, and made their judgement. The reason this won't change over the years like other movies like Shawshank Redemption, which tanked and is now a classic, is because people saw these movies opening night, they saw them on DVD, they waited for these movies for years, so it is not like someone here just discovered the PT movies and still has to watch them. I didn't see Shawshank til 1999, and what a movie I missed for 5 years, but I saw the PT movies opening weekend, big difference.

I don't know what to tell you Gomer, but for me I just come here to talk to fans of my ilk, and that is what I like, and as I said earlier, if it is boring, then goto ORS, that is a site with good fireworks. Sometimes people just want to talk with fans who love the O-OT and thats it, and in the same vein bitch about the PT and how good it could have been, without anyone telling me it was great, and how great the SE are. Message to you Gomer, if I loved the PT and SE, I wouldn't be fighting for the fricking O-OT so damn hard, so can you understand what I love and what I dont'?

Wonderfully said CO. You're a very logical thinker, I must say.

But all that typing won't get through to Gomer. It goes in one ear and out the other. Or bounces off at the retina. He'll never listen to any of this, sadly.

Great points, CO and Palpatine.

And I'd like to say, I think we forced Go-Mer into a corner with his line "it's not my fault I was banned on four different sites." With that track record, I'm surprised that he's allowed to sign up anywhere. (I know it doesn't work that way though.)

CO and Palpatine's points were great. There are sites for every kind of fan, and this is for OUT fans, and is a laid back community. Until Gomer showed up, and changed the entire General Discussion Thread in 2 months. Now if that's not trolling, I ask you what is.
