It's not illegal on MY end. I didn't make them. And I own the 2004 versions as well, so its all perfectly legal I think.
And if Lucas ever cracked down on people having bootleg copies of the OOt, he'd become the world's biggest hypocrite. Saying that they don't deserve to be films and that they were just an early, unfinished version. He's disowned them. So if he cracks down on bootlegging of the OOT, he'd be showing an amount of care for the films, which he has repeadedly stated he doesn't have.

Yep. Those books aren't exactly hard to read. I don't go to the midnight parties, but got my copy of HBP at 8:00 AM at Wal-Mart, had it done by dinner. OOTP took a little under two days to finish. (I had to break for meals and sleep. Darnit!)
I agree. The pacing of the PT was horrible. Anakin's turn to the dark side in ROTS could have have been much better executed with some better editing, in my opinion. And someone needed to take a stand and cut out some of the damn podrace in episode one. It just went on and on for ever.
I'd buy another set of Star Wars if it was in Hi-Def with the OOT and a plethora of bonus features. But not if the PT is with it. I don't need those pieces of shit too.
Originally posted by: TheSessler I'd like to get into Kenshin, but that is a hell of a lot of manga to buy.
Try collecting all 42 volumes of Dragon Ball. That's 14 more volumes than Kenshin has... Now that I have all of Dragon Ball, I am trying to get into Kenshin, but its a big commitment if I like volume one to get 28 volumes. My shelf space is already being eaten up by my ever-growing collections of One Piece, Death Note, and Yu-Gi-Oh, which will have 38 volumes at completion. (Don't call me a nerd for liking Yu-Gi-Oh. It's really good in manga form. Even the uncut anime can't live up to it.)
You're right, but still, Lucas could simply view it as "people wanted the 2004 editions again." We know he'll twist it in any way he can. But hopefully you're right.
And I would be planning to buy them, but money is a bit of an issue. Plus, I already have had a VHS set, the 2004 dvd set, and a bootleg set. Two out of the three were gifts, and I just don't want to keep spending money on Star Wars. I'll admit that, while Star Wars is a great trilogy of films, there are movies out there a like more, a lot more in some cases, and it seems silly to keep spending money on the same film when it isn't even my favorite. My favorite movies I've only had up to two copies of. (A VHS and DVD version later.)
Let me clear up the DBZ manga thing. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are two seperate manga series here in the states, but in Japan, they were originally just Dragon Ball. The japanese anime split them up, and the american anime split them up as well, so to avoid confusion, Viz just put Z on volumes 17-42. I'd also just like to say when you do own all 42 volumes, you have to have a helluva lot of shelf space.
Favorites:
Movie: Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) Book: The Lord of the Rings Game: 1. Super Mario 64 (DS or N64 Version) Manga: Death Note (Dragon Ball being a close runner-up.) TV Show: "24" tied with "House M.D."
Originally posted by: Jobel Of course if people don't buy them, Lucas will just take that as an indication that nobody wants the OT.
And therein lies the catch 22.
Exactly. However....there's another catch. Lucas is supposedly doing this as an experiment to find out which version people prefer. However, as any fifth grade science teacher will tell you, when you set up an experiment, there are some rules that must be followed, like having the experiment be fare. If you want to find out what food a frog prefers, you give it two different foods at different times. You don't just shove them down its throat at the same time.
If you didn't get my metaphor, to have a fair experiment, Lucas would have to package the OOT and the 2004SE seperately to see which sells better.
So, back to my starting point, catch number two is, even if this set sells better than any DVD ever sold, Lucas will just take it as people just wanted the 2004 edition again, only with new packaging and a second disk.
(That's why sending back SE discs is a good idea.)
Ok, that doesn't make any sense. There were no asian women in that scene. Just asian looking CGI aliens.
And I'm going to test this theory about having this guy never post here again. Here goes.
The water opera was just plain silly and used to show off CGI and a scene that needed none. (I won't comment on Asian women...I'll get flamed because I'll be viewed as racist no matter what I say.)
I think that John williams was at his best with ESB. Great score, and in my opinion, the best he's ever done. (Though I loved the score to the first Harry Potter film) I also agree that the level of music indicates how good a Star Wars movie is. ESB had the best music, and was the best Star Wars film.
But Williams isn't my favorite composer. He reuses the same tunes too much. Using tunes many times isn't bad, but Williams can't always pull it off. My favorite composer of today would have to be Howard Shore. No score will ever outmatch that of the LOTR trilogy.
Anyway, Williams was at his best with the OT. Sadly, the next version of Star Wars will probably have the whole score replaced with a Gungan chorus.
I hope no one actually believed that. After all, anyone can post a review on B&N.COM. Hell, I could go and post a review that the special edition will never again be released and the OOT is getting a high-def remastering with five discs of bonus features, but that doesn't make it true.
Yep. Exactly. I relate Star Wars with Luke Skywalker, as do millions of individuals who grew up with his adventures. The people who grew up on Star Wars always would relate Star Wars with Luke, because he was the hero of the OT. Anakin was introduced as the protaginist in the PT.
BTW I don't conisder the Star Wars saga to be about anakin. After all, he's only a cold heartless villan in the OT, until the very end. I conisder Star Wars to be about the struggle between good and evil--played out in the stars.
...... serves as proof that George forgot how to write. The most fundamental rule of writing, or any art for that matter, is to remember your audience.
Exactly. George couldn't ever decide what his audience was, so he just wrote what felt good and was done with it. TPM was a huge mess because we had Jar-Jar's antics on one side, and Qui Gon and Obi-Wan's chats and duels on the other side. AOTC felt like he was catering to women who like chick flicks for most of it, and then near the end switched to action loving eight year olds. And ROTS was for action loving kids for much of it....for people who like chick flicks...and for whoever likes Jar-Jar he gave a nod to.
Eh, I'll be sticking with my 4-Disc extended edition releases. Those had some great bonus features (five years later and I still haven't watched em' all) and the extended editions were GREAT. I consider them the only versions now, they were such a vast improvment on the theatrical cuts.
And out of curiosity, has anyone ever made DVD covers of the 1995 VHS faces set? Believe it or not, those were my favorite covers and I'd love to see them on a DVD cover. Could someone post a link?
Don't worry. It wasn't snooty. And Ithought the Laserdisc and VHS faces sets had the same covers, but I guess I mean the VHS ones. Thanks for the link. I'll try sorting through it all.
I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me how to make DVD covers. Programs, dimensions and so forth. (Maybe some price comparisons on needed programs too.) My plan is to try and take the faces covers from the 1993 VHS and Laserdisc releases of Star Wars and make them into DVD covers. I've never done anything like that before, so any help would be much appriciated.
You're probably right. I'm definitely going to try Best Buy. Target just doesn't seem to have good prices anymore, though I'm betting that I'll be buying from Circuit City. I rarely buy new DVD's anywhere else now. Circuit City almost always has the best price on new releases at the standard 13.99. I'm not willing (usually) to pay the 16 dollars or more that Best Buy and Target have. Just too much for a DVD. But 13 is good, I'm betting that's what the september releases will be.
This is why ROTS might be my least favorite of the prequels. It gets worse everytime I see it. The best scene is Anakin vs. Obi Wan, mostly because its a fight with ZERO dialouge, until the final scene, in which the dialouge is quite good. While AOTC gets absolutely nothing accomplished other then balndly setting up the romance between Anakin and Padme, and the clone war. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Episodes one and two should have been one episode. Anakin's turn would have been in Episode Two, and episode three would have connected the two trilogies. (And Oh yeah, Irvin Kershner would have directed all three with Lawrence Kasdan writing the scripts on all of them.) Anyway, back to why I like ep. 2 the most. I think I like it the most because it is easily the most watchable. Unlike ROTS, it doesn't decline in quality each time I see it. It's stayed firm at "pretty bad." I would like TPM the most...except for the horrible dialouge and whatever kid they got for Anakin. I can't ever watch TPM now because that kid Anakin was a horrible, horrible actor. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor made the perfect jedi pair, thier dialouge being the best in the series and Qui-Gon being a very good charecter. But the quality of thier partnership doesn't make up for the Gungans and Jar-Jar. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a Jar-Jar hater. He's harmless. But he does give me a headache. TPM also feels the most like a film, as there wasn't so much damned CGI. But still, I think I might like AOTC the best.
But wait....reading back through my post....I realized that TPM, even with an overdose of Jar-Jar and the stupid can't-act kid....it IS the best of the PT. The pros. outweigh the cons I guess. Strike what I said earlier, I've changed my position. TPM would be my favorite PT film. I also forgot to mention that "Duel of the Fates" is my favorite lightsaber battle next to Darth Vader vs. Luke in ESB.
Originally posted by: Gaffer Tape Ahh, those BTTF discs are so perfect. If only Lucasfilm could take a note out of Universal/Zemeckis/Gale's notebook.
Yep, those WERE perfect. And dirt cheap too. I got them right when they came out, and it was under thirty bucks at walmart. Not only were they the absolute original films, they were anamorphic and looked GREAT. Not only that, it had great bonus features. Instead of just making a new documentary and leaving the old ones in the shadows, they gave us the old featurettes and the new ones, which was really fun to watch, because it showed how the filmmakers have changed in the twenty year gap between featurettes. If only George Lucas gave Star Wars this much dignity. I remember seeing so many featuretts and documentaries growing up, and I don't believe I'll ever see them again. (Though Empire of Dreams is really a very good documentary.)
I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something about "It'll all come out in the end. Now we'll see what the fans really want." I've revised the letter to hold this line.
With regards to your comments that sales of this set will show what versions the fans really want, I am returning this 2004 edition disc that I recieved in the recent release to help you with your calculations. I only wanted the original theatrical version.
I would have preferred that the Original Version DVDs be in a 16:9 anamorphic format, but since this is all that's currently available, I guess will have to settle for non-anamorphic for the time being. I do, however, hope that we can see a remastered, anamorphic version of the film(s) in the near-future, preferebly on a hi-def format.
But I would much rather watch the Original Version DVDs in a non-anamorphic format than watch the Special Editions in an anamorphic format- so I give my DVDs to you. You may do with them what you like.
I hear that they're going to use the original theatric prints and do a painstaking frame-by-frame remastering! This is gunna be awesome! I can't wait! Thanks for notifying me, Sir States-The-Obvious-Alot.
Whoa, the original poster got it spot on. That's EXACTLY how I felt. I thought it was great in theaters, but find it cheesy and laughable now. What the **** was the point of Grievous anyway? How did he serve the movie? His voice was horrible too. The first 25 minutes drag horribly, and also have horrible dialouge. It was only worth it to see what the clone wars were like, though it was executed badly. Also, I agree that the turn scene was poorly done. It wouldn't have been if Anakin had not questioned himself, just turned in that instant. There should have been no questioning, no akwardness. Just Anakin turning to the dark side.
I'd pay up too two hundred fity, seeing as I'll be trading in my GameCube for it. Also, it looks like an awesome system, with the virtual console and the new controller. What I am not willing to do is pay the suggested price of sixty dollars a game.
