I agree with everything you said Bingo, apart from your new-found optimism for the prequels. I'm not sure they can really be made to work. The performances are almost uniformly stilted (as they are in Jedi, save for Ian McDiarmid and Frank Oz) and I just don't see how any amount of tinkering can imbue sufficient emotional depth into films that are all so totally devoid of it.

But yeah, your others points are commendable.

Info Wanted: Should ADYWAN re-edit the prequels?

ChainsawAsh:

I'm interested to see what he's going to do with them, but I don't really care too much, to be honest. I don't think they can be made into films worthy of the Star Wars name, no matter who's fixing them.

You said it. I'm sure he'll make as good a stab at it as anyone, but those movies would take more work than I think is possible with available material.

Although, given the time frame we're looking at for Ady to get around to the prequels, the Blu-rays will doubtless be out and probably more deleted footage. Maybe not, but by then it's a possibility.

These movies arent just 80's movies anymore, there a part of a saga. In 20 years, these movies will be considered as a saga, not classic 80's movies

I don't know why you guys are so afraid of adding CG to an alredy strong plot. Cleaning things up would greatly enhance viewing and make them feel new.

That's not what I was saying. I was saying that no matter what you do, these movies will always look and feel like they were made when they were. There is absolutely no getting around that, it's beyond the ability of any fan editor, any editor period, to change the feel/style of the movie with the available material. The only way to do that is to totally reshoot it.

As for adding CG to an already strong plot, well, you said you'd like a pretty CG scene of Luke adding. Well, for what? If it doesn't add anything to the plot, it shouldn't be included. If you don't get that, then there's no point discussing it. The point I was making was that CG or any FX are totally pointless if they aren't necessary to the story. Us seeing Luke travelling across a desert might be beautiful, but it has to be necessary to the plot. And it isn't.

Ripplin:

They could've easily said 'holo-tapes' or something like that

Well maybe it's slang for just that, like 'droids is. Lucas certainly tried to get a real-world thing going in the original Star Wars, so I'm perfectly happy to accept that. And as I was saying before, tapes are a lot less archaic a storage material than people think. A reel of the best digital tape holds a hell of a lot more material than any disc of equivalent diameter, so there's no issue for me.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I think that line in Empire is incredibly good, and in retrospect it's really quite obvious that Vader really is Luke's father, and that Luke knows it. But back when those movies came out, it wasn't seen that way. Just as the "other" Yoda speaks of to Ben is clearly Leia, retrospectively, because she senses Luke calling for her and she rescues him. But again, the debate in fan magazines raged on for three years about those two questions.

So why remove them, just because you know the answers now?

3PO going to Jabbas palice could do with a futher re-do. Maybe put the droids on a narrow path leading upto the palice . Add a few hundred foot drop on the left hand side (even i can do that) and it makes the entrance more precarious (as i suffer from vertigo)

Again, what for? It has absolutely no bearing on the plot whether their journey to the palace was easy or not. The only reason we see them approaching at all is to establish the Palace and inform the audience what the situation is. Adding something like you suggest is distracting from the function of the scene.

Shanerjedi:

Add Ben on a speeder and have him give that dragon call and then have him swoop in do a CG backflip off the bike, and then whip out his saber and start taking out Tuskens.

Now you know as well as I do that some people will think that's a fantastic idea.

But you've got me thinking and I'm going to go back and improve some classic movie entrances in a similar fashion...

Remember the brooding, shadowy entrance of Max von Sydow in The Exorcist? Not any more you don't. That old fella is gonna come flying in over the rooftops on a speeder bike up to those gates, grinding that engine and scaring the shit outa that demon. No mysterious entrance for Father Merrin any more, no sir. Now we know he means business.

Mary Poppins? Umbrella? Haha, oh no, no, no, no, no.

Ghost:

Could Luke and Bens conversation be moved to later in the movie somewhere?

You can try putting it at various points in the movie, but it has to come sooner than later. Either at the start or roundabout where it is already. If it can be made to work, then the beginning would help sell Luke's plausibility as a Jedi.

The only way Luke on a speeder bike would make sense is if he and Obi-Wan have their conversation in Ben's hut. Then from there have him ride a speeder bike across Tatooine. With a lot of editing, that could be an ok possibilty.

But I would rather have a pretty CG scene of Luke flying in and across Tatooine.

Wow, I'm feeling a rather big generational gap between the two of us.

I think I'm gonna agree with Ghost on that - and I hope that me being a 19 year old guy has nothing to do with that :)

It probably had a lot to do with that, but I don't mean that to patronise you. In the 19 years you've been growing up, movies have changed a lot because of CG, and in many ways it's for the worse.

Like any tool, CG can be used effectively and it can be used unsuccessfully, but too many filmmakers have dumbed down to ONLY showing pretty CG stuff, at the expense of character, story and so on. Movies that use CG only to augment those essential qualities are welcome, those that don't are, for a lot of people, unwelcome. What good are beautiful images within a movie if all they are doing is wasting time? Beautiful CG I can appreciate, but when it's getting in the way of a story, I don't want to see it.

I dare say nearly everyone in this industry I've ever worked with feels the same. And also the deep frustration when their work is rendered dramatically impotent.

Angel did a mockup and Dave did a video version.

This is very rough (as per, and hopefully someone else out there could do a better version) but along with the obvious light fiddles and replacing of the plain Janes with some aliens you may notice some badly cut and pasted generals of yesteryear in here.

I'm really too busy at the moment to do it properly but I thought the idea deserved a mention :

Return Of The Generals

Is it me, or are Ackbar and the other Mon Calamari just being beamed down?

Shanerjedi:

I think we should give him a BMX bike with off road tires. Then have him flying off the hills doing jumps on his arrival. That would be cool.

Forget this pathetic arrival of an ominous person walking alone in a dark cape and hood up to the palace. Ditch it. Add more FX!

For the love of - oh, I get it. :-)

Well, BMX's are a bit '80s and we run the risk of them fitting stylistically with the rest of the movie, so you'll have to come up with something else. How about a hoverboard? He could surf the dunes on his way down to Palace in a scene which is strikingly beautiful and dynamic and yet utterly dramatically redundant.

I'd like to see any future edits do something about "stolen data tapes."

I'm not sure what one could or should change it to, maybe just "stolen plans," but as advanced as they are, they probably wouldn't be storing information on tapes.

It's the only thing aside from the old CG Death Star in the briefing that was fixed for Revisited that jumps out to me as seeming dated.

"Tapes" does sound rather archaic, but I kind of like it because it plants Star Wars exactly when it was made. I think too much modernising will ruin the movie, because no matter what you do, it's always going to look like it was made in the 1970s.

And who's to say they don't have some super hi-tech form of tape? Even though we have mega-capacity discs these days, digital information is still stored on tapes a lot of the time. When a movie is shot digitally, for example, all that information is actually stored on tape, not disc.
