If you liked the play, you might like the more contemporary and quirky movie version from Baz Luhrman titled "William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet" which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Daines, and John Leguizamo.

Hahaha I've seen about half of that verison and it is so cool lol.

Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis (Released)

One look at the massive cityscapes in the film, and you realize George could have done Coruscant before there was CGI.

Wait, did the guy find any of the lost scenes?? I read up about this movie the other day ago and now I'm very interested in it. And Coruscant was going to be in ROTJ but for some reason they cut it out lol.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
In Dark Helmets editing thread ADM (I think) mentioned about in Ep. 3 during Padme's funeral to somehow altering her hand to make it move a little (like in Romoe and Juliet the 1968 version) so that it looks like her death was fake. This way it clears up the whole I remeber my mother fuck up and it makes Padme's and Anakins love story more dramatic and saddening.

That's a nifty idea, it would have to be ever so subtle and people would have to rewind to see if the're seeing things.

Her hand movement would definitely be a cool touch. It would give Vader's story a huge sense of tragedy and perhaps a tragic gravity similar to ROMEO AND JULIET (I recently watched Baz Luhrman's movie version, and he had this exact hand shot for Juliet!)

I think I'm with ADigital Man in the limited skills department, though. If I feel really ambitious, I'll try, but I've just started using Adobe After Effects.

Like DarthRichard said, this would be a really cool idea to submit to the SW Saga Edit thread by the StarKiller Ranch crew if you're interested. If not, I might recommend it.

ADigitalMan, what software were you considering using for the hand movement?

I never thought of that but ya it does give it that Romeo and Juliet feel to there love story. Hey I jsut finished reading that in my english class too lol.

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!

Did you seriously just ban OCP from the boards because he doesn't agree with you?

I know I haven't been around here for years like some people but what the f*** man? Is that fair to ban someone because you don't agree that he thinks DVD is better quality then laserdisc? Look I really don't have a lot of pull around here but who the hell are you to ban someone because they don't agree with your precious XO Project?

No he didn't ban him cuz of a disagreement, OCP was sending nasty pm's and doing other things in other threads also.

ONLY if it's a DVD-9 and 16:9 though! Only for comaprison reasons for the 2006 Official O-OT DVD release of which I'm assuming will look better than ANYONE'S laserdisc transfers including the XØ Project since LucasFilm has direct access to the actual film elements and believe me I believe wholeheartedly that's what their using.
From my understanding, laserdisc has a different black level compared to DVD. So, from what I can tell, what we've been seeing from the laserdisc preservations is that the contrast has been boosted due to the black levels. Sure, calibration would work perfectly but I'm having more time believing the new 2006 set will be far better than what we've seen since as stated before, they'll be derived from actual film elements instead of an inferior format.
Neil S. Bulk is just spouting b.s. that they're using straight off laserdisc transfers. No, they've been quietly working on the film transfers since they have more time since a film isn't coming out and it won't be as rushed.
I'm going to flat out purchase the 2006 release and I'm cautiously optimistic that it's going to blow all the other laserdisc derived projects out of the water in terms of clarity and opacity. Figure that alot of people could rework their various fan-edits into using the 2006 O-OT DVD's and have seperate "mastered from laserdisc" and a "mastered from DVD" releases...
I can't wait to buy the DVD's come September!

And by the way, Han doesn't shoot first anymore. He's the only one shooting.

I sure hope so. They changed the press rlease again on sw.com, it no longer says state of the art 93 and now says see Star Wars before the epsidoe number was added. I think they are using the film stocks. But anyways I'm still super excited for hte X0 project anyways.

Heh, I'd pay for a shirt like that. You never know, in a few years, George Lucas may digitally remove Alec Guinness from the original trilogy and replace him with new footage of Ewan McGregor.

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!

okay, ive said it at least twice before but it has gone to no effect i see.

WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT VIDEO? NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE VIDEO WILL BE LIKE! LASERDISK RIPS? WHERE IS THAT MENTIONED IN THE NEWS RELEASE??

Seriously. People are talking about LD rips as if it were fact. Was there a second press release i missed??

Jim Ward said the video will be from 1993 and inferior to the Lowry-restored 2004 release. Duh!! How does that translate to "we are taking the Laserdisk masters and putting them on dvd"? Were that the case, would it not make sense to use the 1995 THX release??

I'll tell you what Ward's comments MOST LIKELY mean. When the SE was first being worked on, the first thing they did was return to the original negatives, and it was found that they had deteriorated quite a bit, and so they began restoration work to clean them. When that was done, the newly-cleaned OOT prints were handed to ILM for the CGI additons. What year was this?

1993.

Did i hear complaints about the image quality in theaters in 1997? Hell no. But Ward is correct--they are inferior to the 2004 Lowry-restored prints. There may be a bit of dirt and scatches. But still. It looks good. Had Ward not informed us that the transfer will be from inferior 1993 prints we would have all assumed that we were getting Lowry-restored OOT's that look as good as the 2004, and then we would have seiged Skywalker Ranch in september when we discovered this was not the case.

The Lowry 2004 editions are the SE. They did not even touch the OOT for this--their starting point for the digital restoration was the 1997 SE print with CGI additions. That is why they must use the 1993 OOT master that they made for the original SE.

This is all of course unconfirmed but it is the only logical explaination. Time will tell and until we know more--KNOW ANYTHING, in fact--about the actual video we will have to shut up about. Dolby 2.0? That was what the films were originally released. I for one am pleased that we get this instead of a phony 1990's DD 5.1 mix.

There is so much complaining here about NOTHING that it is making me sick. We got what we wanted, and more i might add--the original theatrical edition of Star Wars has never been available on home video. So what the fuck is everyones goddamn problem?? Yeah, this should have been out years ago, and yeah i dont really want the 2004 disk with this, but so what? I mean thats not a big deal for gods sakes. At with a suggested retail price of $30, meaning it will actually be sold for $20-25 (no one sells for the ACTUAL retail price) I'd consider this the dvd bargain of the year.

Fuck.

YES! I totally agree everyone here to STFU until we get more info in probably 2 monthes or something.

Poor OCB. Now I see the problem. He's desperate for attention and kudos for his release.

Sad, really. No one likes an attention whore. I was hoping the days of DanielB and AWK were over, and now one of our own has turned to the Dark Side.

I know it is a shame that we have a new troll here. But AWK is here as Andy_K_250 or something like that.
Anyways on a good note, I have so much respect for you guys and what and undertaking you are doing *tips my hat off you to guys*. And I can't wait to have the whole XO trilogy on my shelf one day .

Hey. I am assuming AWK was a flamer or something. I'm not AWK. I think if you search my posts, you'll see that I have never posted anything inflammatory and, aside from maybe being less schooled in a lot of the technical aspects of these projects, I've shown nothing but support for everyone here. If I did something to offend you, please let me know. If you were just grabbing a name that starts with A at random, that's cool, but please don't malign my reputation here (what little I have).

Sorry Dude it jsut that AWK made a shit load of usernames like that, and then the OOT anouncement came and your came. Sorry to jump to conclusions. Please forgive my irrational judgement.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Originally posted by: Trooperman
Hi, folks. I still can't believe that Lucasfilm is releasing the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. This is ALL THE MORE REASON to finish this edit. Before, there weren't any official releases with the original logo, stereo sound, and so on...and now there will be. This edit was already meant to fit with the original versions, and now that they are being released in much the same format as mine will be, the quality will be consistent and the completed set will be wonderful.

However, this announcement means that I am definitively setting the release date for Shroud of the Dark Side in September of this year. That way, I will be able to purchase the original movie on DVD and rip the logos for complete consistency and great quality. The film will be practically done this summer, I'll be working on subtitles, extras, and such, and come September, I'll just be able to plug in the opening and begin encoding for DVD.

The dubbing for Anakin is practically done- I have completed all the scenes except the conversation with Watto and the conversation with 3PO/Owen. I'm also going to rerecord the "departure from naboo" scene, as that was a bad recording day for me (the takes didn't come out well). Know, though, that I'm archiving all of this material should I ever need any of it for any reason (documentary, an alternate take for a future version, a 5.1 mix, etc.). All of the original ADR recordings will go into storage untouched.

A trailer, huh? I didn't even think about a trailer! That'll be fun!

It will be! I'm thinking of doing it in the classic style, with a narrator and the actor's names appearing on the screen along with their close-ups. "Starring EWAN MCGREGOR", "HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN", and so on.

"...At least Phantom Menace had some structure to it. However, this editing has been great because now, I really understand the deeper reasons as to why it was poorly done."

Interesting. I would like to hear more!

Well, I realised that the lousy cinematography had a lot to do with it. All of the subjects are pretty much placed in the center of the screen, which is bad style. The music was hacked, and the colors were artificial looking. Also, the very fact that there was so little chemistry or interaction between the leads that I was literally able to rerecord all of the lines and insert them without a hitch is really sad.

Very good stuff, but that use of the 'Mars' track during the battle. It's such a famous piece of music in it's own right it seemed very out of place hearing it in a Star Wars film to me. In the same way I wouldn't expect to hear a Beethoven track.

You know what, that's a very good point. I was afraid someone was going to say that! This will probably be jarring to people the first time they hear it. Then again, so will the snippets of "Raiders" music, for some people. Everyone has a different musical background, and therefore this edit will hit different people in different ways; some will be thrilled the first time, and some might be utterly distracted by music that is very familiar to them. I like this piece so much, though, that I'm reluctant to remove it. Because by the second viewing, or the third viewing, people will be used to the better version, and it seems a shame to remove it because it's so famous. Very good point, though.

Talk to you guys soon- I still can't believe the great news!

-TM

Great to hear more news on this wonderful edit that I can't wait to see but I think waiting on the new release to see if the old LFL logo is on it is not a good idea, cuz then what if they put the new logo on it. Possibly release a v. 1.0 of this edit and then wait to see the new set and if it has the old logo then do a v. 1.1. Just thinking out loud lol.
