STAR WARS: Episode I - THE ANCIENT LORE [Episode I Remade /Proj started: 2014] (WIP)
Time

Good news on V2 Andreas (more familiar with you from fanedit.org 😄)
Your edit is still my go to for Episode I, reguarding changes for v2 my original review on fanedit hits most points I had…

"When it comes to watching Episode I I’ve personally avoided watching it for so long I barely remember the film and as such also avoided the many fanedits over the years for fears of bring back those bad memories. As its been so long I finally gave in and watched Andreas edit and I’m glad I did.

What drew me to this edit was the reimagining of the narrative and using other source material to expand on much needed character development while omitting offensive scenes throughout some examples SPOILERS like expanding on the trade federations backstory to strengthen their motives, allowing the villains more screen time to give a sense of peril and also better introducing Dookus character to the storyline and reintroducing Jar-Jars as a member of the Jedis original crew sent from corusent. Is this film perfect? no. can the few issues be fixed? yes, quite easily.

The main issues are really only technical ones like Mauls sabre changing orange in some scenes, although you get the narrotive point better with Dookus hologram throughout it still looks out of place in some scenes eg Jedi council scene @ 00:56:23 and some clunky subtitles one example of this is during the original films opening scenes on the trade federations ship which is now shown later in the film when Qui-Gons using his sabre to melt the bridges blast doors these are the new lines:

Nute Gunray: “close the blast doors… Were you born stupid?”
Rune: “this guy just wont give up!”
Nute Gunray: “shut up, your encouraging him” – encouraging? Should read something more like "shut up, stop & admiring them!

Also something out of place is the heavy metal rift first heard at Tattooine when entering Mos Espa and the Maul scenes which brings you out of the Starwars film. Lastly Qui-Gons close up death scene @ 01:27:56 repeats itself but not sure if its intentional though.

Overall a very good edit from Andreas and a definite improvement over the theatrical, looking forward to the improvements version 2 of the Ancient Lore will bring."

That shuttle shot is very well done and was something I thought needed tweaking when watching first time as Ties don’t actually land ever in starwars. Whole thread about Ties landing with some convincing theories why they don’t…

Also I’m all for naming Mustafar in the crawl helps ground where we are and its something that should of been in from the start.

I don’t think that I’ll revisit TFA and TLJ after this (and fixing a video glitch in TFA:R V4), even if you all keep coming up with cool stuff. I have revisited them once each following TROS to tie into it in appropriate ways, so I think this will be it for those two.

Thanks Hal so glad to hear this I feel that both edits are at there best now, Do what Lucas could not by not revisiting whats already been done 😉👍

Hi Hal,
Would it be possible to cut down Finns over the top moment down when he’s escaping in the Tiefighter with Poe and shoots the turret… “did you see that, DID YOU SEE THAT!”… unfortunately we did 😬

Also maybe consider dropping the Han shoots behind at Mas castle battle without looking scene, I know its referenced somewhat in ROS but does it need to be here still and will it still be about in a future edit of ROS 🤔

But hope ultimatley you edit stays intact as is for v5 😉🤞

Just wanted to lay out a few of the options I’ve heard floating around regarding Rey’s story in the movie, as well as share some bigger thoughts regarding Ascendent.

So, these are some of alternative reveal options I’ve heard so far:

  1. Rey Palpatine (Original)
  2. Rey Nobody, Palpatine saw her future and ordered to have her killed/taken.
  3. Not Palpatine’s biological grandchild, but created her through the dark side, like an anti-Chosen One.
  4. Rey Nobody, but she killed her parents. (Remove connection with Ochi).
  5. Rey Nobody, but Kylo killed her parents.
  6. Rey Nobody, and the main conflict deals with destiny and visions of her future.

I like option 3. Not Palpatine’s biological grandchild, but created her through the dark side.

As this mirrors the belief I have for what the “chosen ones” are initially for, created by Plagus/Palpatine for over many lifetimes to serve as a vessal for him to transfer his spirit essense when the times right. This also connects the previous movies using the same logic, Anakin, Rey & countless other “chosen ones” is how Plagus has been kept alive… “I Am ALL SITH!”

Palpatine Clone
Now Palpatines confirmed to be a clone and also explained is the decaying snoke appearance in TFA & TLJ as not being able to hold his powerful force spirit for long hence the tanks of other incubated snoke bodies.

This would explain all his talk in RTJ about strike me down with all of your hatred as doing so would let Palpatine take over whoever does kill him while angered with his dark force spirit akin to 1998s film Fallen. Going further would it be right in thinking Palpatine always had this ability “which some consider to be unnatural” and that Darth plagueis and Palpatine are one in the same. This would explain the statues in snokes throne room and the relationship with those attendence aliens from the unknown region also in snokes throneroom in TLJ as well as Exegol cultists. How this may shape into an edit of ROS erm… I’m still thinking over 🤔

Possibly emphasize that the cultists on Exegol are the key reason that the emperors spirit was able to reinbody itself and without those cultists hes not coming back.

There are evidently a few spots that couldn’t be perfect. The reason is because somehow I pulled a boner and lost the original recording, forcing me to carefully resync the old track as best I could.

Also, “pull a boner” should come back into the vernacular.

I see, would’nt worry thats nothing compared to the boner that disney pulled when attempting to make a coherent sequal trilogy 😄

Very interesting listening to Hals commentary track for TLJ and Hal describing Snoke as habitually an emperor clone which was recorded before any ROS revelations.

Unlike TFA v3 commentary used for TFA v4 which synces fine TLJ commentary track recorded for v2 does have syncing issues with v3 in snoke throne room battle onwards also no sound for a few minutes in places. All the same rather have this unsynced commentary track then nothing.

I was thinking about the ‘3 lessons’ thing:

It’s actually ok that it’s left at 2 lessons on account of the breakdown in the relationship between Rey and Luke.

It’s not necessarily a continuity error, she just elects to leave to face/redeem Kylo before Luke got the opportunity to deliver the third lesson.

Neither Luke or Rey were expecting Rey to be in active communication with Kylo and the developments and revelations that arose as a result changed the landscape of their relationship and so the plan simply changed?

I know thats not what was originally planned hence the existence of the deleted scene, but it still works…’from a certain point of view’ ? 😃

Those valid points are how I do view the current version of TLJ and it works very well for how that versions story is told.

stevepaynter said:

With the incredible editing Poppa has been doing with other scenes recently he could probably fix those issues in the 3rd lesson deleted scene 😜.

It would be great to see that under an altenative version of TLJ edit with light use of caretakes akin to return of the jedis yub hub/special edition ending versions about. I also understand that its hard work doing these edits and the idea of an alternative version of the same edit must be off putting to make.

Yeah, just resynced it to match the length. I must have recorded a little segment somewhere specifically for V3.

I see, just finished listening to it I find these tracks very insightful v3 is ref quite a bit thoughtout parts but its not an issue, also great that it was recorded prior to the events of Rise of Skywalker as you hear your hopes along the way before what we know now about the story. Last part is the best just before the credits roll stating that maybe episode IX theatrically might not even need a fanedit when out. 😋

I like what ROS offered but I’m liking more the idea of listening to another commentary track on how episode IX story was tightened and fixed by the fan community in the near future. I’m off to listen to your TLJ commentary track now 😀👍

Thanks Hal

Hi poppasketti,

While Hals Legendary edit has always been my go to for TLJ myself and a few others have been keep to see the third lession scene reinserted back in.
This will also mean having the caretakes back in the background to a degee but the lession conveys so well to Rey and us the audiense that Jedi of old would rather meditate over “their” force then get involved in other peoples problems. This strengthens beliefs as to why Luke is in isolation and his reasoning as to let the Jedi of old end.

Lukes 3rd Lession
Lukes 3rd Lession Clip

Hals stated he does’nt have any interest in an alternate version of TLJ Legenday with this scene and caretakers but would this be something you’d entertain?

Hey, Bud

Not to speak for anyone else but I think the decision across multiple edits is that the amount of work required to complete the abandoned VFX on this sequence in order for it not to seem thrown in or bolted on as an after thought is too much for many editors to justify the time/trouble?

I could be very wrong, and it’s certainly not my place to pass comment but that’s just what I’ve gleaned from similar questions being asked previously?

I am curious though and just as a means of having a conversation, what is it that you prefer about HAL’s TLJ? Not that there’s anything wrong with that view! (I really am just being curious?)

Hal’s TFA: Restructured is my go to cut of TFA

I really think Hal fully unlocked the magic within that movie.

However, Poppa win’s it for me with his TLJ Rekindled. I know his project started on the foundation of Hal’s Legendary, but I really feel he’s found his rhythm with this project now and it’s really starting to take on a life of it’s own to the same extent as Hal’s TFA and hence I don’t think I could go back to the original cut now.

Hi smpearce1981,
In answer to your question personally Hals Legendary v3 edit ticks all the boxes for what I want when watching TLJ albeat the as stated unusable 3rd lesson scene (can see my prefered versions below). I’m not knocking poppaskettis version in any way but I’m happy with what Hal offers with v3 having also intergrated some of poppasketti changes found here also I like Hals method of being less is more and leaving what he can untouched and only editing magor issues. I’m actually rewatching TFA Restructured V4 again at this moment but with Hals commentary 😋.

I have a question though this is going to be obvious once pointed out to me but what is actually unfinished in the 3rd lession deleted scene as I dont see any wires, placeholder vfx or green backdrops in the scene which makes it unusable in an edit? 🤔

Info Wanted: Star Wars - 4K77 v1.4 [DNR] With Color Grading Available?

ChainsawAsh said:

It’s because the v1.0 DNR version is basically an entirely different “fork” from the v1.0 No-DNR version with an entirely different base color grading, so any color corrections which are done to one of them can’t be applied to the other.

If Williarob pops in here, he can explain better than I, since he’s the one who did v1.0 DNR in the first place.

There is a new version in the works which uses DrDre’s new reel-by-reel color grading that should finally give us a new DNR version and bring DNR and no-DNR into parity so future updates to one can be applied to the other, like 4K83.

Thanks ChainsawAsh thats the kind of info I was looking for, good to hear a color grade DNR is a future posability still as I find the DNR is done perfectly in ANH Tattoines sandy landscapes were far too grainy 😄 with non-DNR.

So DrDre’s color grading technique is the way forward it sounds like, look forward to seeing it at some point.

Thanks FreezingTNT2,
But I think your refering to Star Wars: 4K77 v1.0 [1080p] [DNR] without Sanjuro_61 color grade which is the one I reference here. Was there a 4K77 DNR version which tackles the overblown contrast levels ?

Contrast Example Ref Here:

Wondering why we have Star Wars: 4K77 v1.4 [No-DNR] with color grading by Sanjuro_61 but not a version with DNR.

Its a shame as the high contrast found in the only DNR version about (4K77 v1.0 [1080p] [DNR]) works well while on Tatooine with the twin suns kind of explaining the alien planet like brightness but once off the planet the blinding contrast really messes up the rest of the film.

Why did Team Negative One make the DNR version with such high contrast levels 🤔

From what I understand the standard tie was designed to only land in hanger bay racks so to stop troops deserting but in Moff Gideons case he has a modified tie able to land and take off without a hanger bay.

Having said that it seems tie fighters maybe able to land after all if you keep your eyes open in the future. 😉

Someone suggested cutting the light skipping thing and I don’t think this would be a bad idea.

Was me and yep its just not needed

The scene of Rey and Kylo fighting over the transport on Pasana, I think the wide shot needs to be altered to make them feel farther apart. The way this scene is paced makes it feel weird as to why Kylo doesn’t pursue them, or why Finn doesn’t try to shoot Kylo.

Exactly what I thought when I watched it why did’nt Kylo persue 🤔

Speaking of Pasana, a few other ideas:
Does Lando really need to be here? I felt the scene of Kylo commanding local troops to get there, and then a Stormtrooper being right there in the next shot felt so weird! I really think you could cut straight to Rey telling them Kylo knows they’re there, and then stealing the speeders.

The first order trooper did seem to pop up out of nowhere and as you discussed here makes more sense.

This might seem unnecessary, but I think it would be interesting to regrade Pasana to make it Jedha. I know it may seem unnecessary, but both planets were filmed at Wadi Rum, Jordan, and if Ochi hunted Jedi relics, it makes sense for him to go to a Jedi planet like Jedha. You could create a new shot of the planet with a big chunk blown out of it, maybe with a ring around it. Having a ring or debri field would make sense since the crew hides in an asteroid field immediately after leaving the planet. Maybe they hid in the asteroid field hoping the First Order would leave. It would help explain how the Knights of Ren knew where they were as well. Again, it may feel unnecessary but I think it would make the planet more interesting and give the location more history.

Sounds great but is that too much of an undertaking ?

After they wipe 3PO’s memory and they’re about to board the Star Destroyer, 3PO says something like, “Whoever this Chewie is were saving, this is madness!” This line feels lazy to me. I think it would be funnier if 3PO could have a line that played well off of the gang just rushing off the ship and blasting everyone in their path. Something that makes you think they’re gonna be sneaky or something, and then BLAST BLAST! I also think 3PO should not have his memory restored.

3PO got his memory back wa to which also do we NEED 3PO back at this point ?

I have no idea how to alter it at this point, but I think the whole Goonies-style “lining the dagger up with the Death Star ruins” feels so strange! Why would Sith loyalists make a brand new dagger with the coordinates of the wayfinder’s location in wreckage that could easily collapse an no longer match the outline of the dagger?

Hehe very true, at least we did’nt have Palpatine rip his robes off screaming HEY YOU GUUUUUYYYSSS!

When Han and Ben have their conversation, I think it would be interesting to overlap Han saying “Ben” with Leia saying “Ben”, to imply Leia is speaking to her son through Han.

Also Hans a memory/ghost here not a force ghost so when he touches his face somehow stop Bens hair fom moving with Hans touch also maybe add an echo or some distortion to Hans voice and blur image slightly to show hes a ghost/memory.

In my opinion, there is just not enough context to explain how or why Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter. Palpatine had a son? It just feels super convoluted to me. If removing this idea altogether would be infeasible, I think Rey being created by Palpatine would make much more sense. Anakin was implied to have made by the Force as a reaction to Plagueis and Sidious’ growing power. Sidious said Plagueis had the power to create life. If this was true, and if all the Rule of Two Sith have been in fact one Sith, then Sidious would know this too. Maybe Rey was made by Palpatine to be the perfect vessel. She was supposed to be what Anakin failed to be.

Rey being another “The Chosen One” created by Palpatine and how we now understand the Rule of Two Sith would make sense here.Palpatine’s granddaughter will be explained later via comics/books at a later date no doubt.

But despite my problems with the film, I think there is hope in the fact that now we have the whole picture, all nine films. Pessimism isn’t in the spirit of fan editing, because we find ways to turn problems into solutions. If the long-term consensus of this film turns out to be rather poor, I do believe we can turn this film, and the whole saga, into a really spectacular series of fan edits. I’m really hopeful about the future of these films!

Me too, the force is stong with this one 😉

Spoilers Within
I managed to avoid all TV adverting and the internet theories/leaks and watched the teaser and first trailer once so went in with no pre conceptions and I walked out of the imax cinema for the most part enjoying what I watched.

Most of the dislikes for Rise of Skywalker at the moment seem to stem from not getting enough backstory for events and charactors witin its 2h22mins timeframe but no doubt all will be explained in time through books/comics/Tv shows ect.

I know I’ll be a minority but I liked what it had delivered with most of what it did right but heres a few fix ideas:

From what I interpreted it to be the reasoning behind the rule of two now is if the apprentice/chosen one is strong enough to kill Palpatine then Palpatine would then take their body and soul hence asking to “strike me down” also explains his quote “I am ALL Sith!” from past apprentice he possesed maybe. With that in mind when Rey did strike him down it would be good to show Palpatines yellow eyes fade from her when dying when he is losing her as a host. (host idea is similair to 1998s Fallen thinking about it).

Remove the lightspeed skipping thing the falcon does at the start of the film… 😬
Han Solo: Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that’d end your trip real quick, wouldn’t it?

Less of Poes love interest side story with the helmet woman which never leads to anywere.

Less of what seems to be Landos daughter and first order deserter again charactor doesn’t lead anywere except for just adding a female Finn.

Cut R2D2 uploading yet another all important message he needs to deliver to the Princess.

not sure how to fix but Kylo landing a Tie on Exogal, Can’t those things only land in docking bay racks?

After first watch these stick to mind the most.

Then moments later we see her walking off with the Tattoo back on show 😬

Also maybe cut a few shots when the team gets attacked by the flying creatures, seriously how many times did they miss close range shots, I know it was dark but… really!
