Is the new one OK?
It's okay until somebody finds a glitch ;)
It's going up in a.b.starwars -- use the same delay offset as before (1.017s or whatever it was)

I don't recall Belbucus ever announcing the new version, or even mentioning it.
It's certainly wasn't a "Version 2" kind of affair, not even v1.1 . . . more like 1.0.1 if you will.
Perhaps he thought the changes were so minor, he just didn't bother with an announcement.

When I first noticed the CRC was different, I wondered if it might be data corruption in the first file. So I asked Moth3r to double-check then new SFV.
Now after seeing those waveforms, it's obvious Belbucus must've done those changes purposefully.

hairy_hen noticed the screenshot yesterday was only a few samples long, might be difficult to even hear it.
So here's a couple more examples with slightly longer duration.
As before, old one is on top, newer one on bottom of each screen.

And ABC asked: Does Audacity suck? Well, I haven't stopped using it yet :)
If it makes unsolicited changes, then that would suck.
I haven't witnessed it personally, although I am NOT trying to discount your own experience.
I'll watch closely, and keep it on a very short leash in future. Thanks for the warning

It looks like Audacity.
Audacity yes.
But the file is on DVD-ROM drive where Audacity cannot change it.
In the past I have used EAC's compare function. It is a useful tool but only 44.1kHz, not 48kHz.
In this case I've used a UN*X-style 'cmp' to compare the files and locate the differences (the equivalent to FC.EXE on a DOS command line.)
A very dumb program, not capable of parsing WAV files, it only tells which bytes are different.
Then I do the maths to convert byte offset into time code.
Audacity was used only for making the picture, nothing else.

Looks like the file ~400 days on a.b.starwars is the older version (2006-09-23)
so I will post the 'new' one (2006-10-28) tomorrow...

so I am going over the '93 PCM tracks.

Might want to look/listen extra close at the spots I've listed below.

Belbucus sent out two distinct versions of '93 ANH "DC48 DVD.wav"
Here they are:

Mallwalker said:

; Archive: DC48 DVD.zip
; Length Method Size Ratio Date Time CRC-32 Name
; -------- ------ ------- ----- ---- ---- ------ ----
; 1395131276 Defl:N 1163562866 17% 09-23-06 09:16 71be2bb2 DC48 DVD.wav
;
DC48 DVD.wav 71be2bb2

; 1395131276 22:24.17 2006-10-28 DC48 DVD.wav
DC48 DVD.wav DD2C9343

As you can see they're about a month apart.

Here's the spots where they differ:
0:28:14.971
0:30:42.752
0:40:12.188
0:40:39.558
0:50:25.887
0:50:26.912
0:50:31.533
1:28:17.739
1:42:23.807

And here is a picture of the first difference

Again, dark_jedi might want to pay extra careful attention to those spots in '93 ANH

maybe an upload error or who knows what.
I hope not, considering I was the uploader back in '06 :)
Actually I have received that file twice on discs Belbucus sent me. First in Fall '06 then again in Summer '07 when mono restoration was finished. The two discs are different brands with different dye recipes. It's the same file on both discs: same timestamp and same CRC, which I've quoted above.
(And the file posted to usenet ~400 days ago has the same CRC as well.)
So I'm quite confident saying it left Belbucus' studio that way.
Belbucus is a pro, and a human pro at that.

Now this reminds me ... there exist two distinct versions of the ANH file "DC48 DVD.wav" which have different CRC.
I shall pinpoint where the difference(s) occur so we can all have a closer listen....

I got a set from ChainsawAsh and I downloaded the GOUT audio alternatives from the newsgroups and all versions I got have this error, but it doesn't matter now, I already have it fixed, and as I said above, no more having to add delay either, straight up PCM already sync'd to the GOUT.

It's great that you got it fixed
...but I still wanted to hear the error just to satisfy my curiosity.
Funny thing is I can't seem to find it.
I did hear a high-pitch sound after "Shields up" but thought it sounded like Ben Burtt sound effect.
Wish I knew exactly what to listen for, or exactly when.
Can anybody pin it down to a mm:ss.ff type timecode or range?

Save Star Wars Dot Com

Do you mean the quote from JayArgonaut regarding Lando's line?
IME that's describing a difference between the THX mix vs. its predecessors,
not a difference between 1478-80 & 1478-85.

So I'd forgotten about the UK PAL 1478-80, which shares the same catalog number with it's domestic counterpart. That confuses the discussion.

The NTSC 1478-80 pressed by Pioneer in Carson, California has copyright (c)1986 (not '85) and it Shirley contains a digital track. I'm holding it now.
I've got a hunch that's the one d_j captured too.

As for the actual contents of the PAL 1478-80, that's still up in the air it seems...

Man, I sure hope he doesn't request the print get destroyed afterward. I recall - was it Adywan? - someone mentioning a local theater having to hand over a print they showed for the 30th Anniversary.
My thoughts exactly.
Hope they have a car waiting by the back door, and another waiting at the side door ready to whisk it away in case any goons turn up.

Over the weekend as time allows I'll double-check the entire usenet post from twenty-some days ago against my copy.
I'll glady supply to anyone who wants the SFV file segaflip posted five years ago, which I expect to match the one on usenet now (I'll confirm it).
I'd post it right here and now, only I've been under the impression Jay & Moth3r don't particularly want this place to become a hash repository

What's next?
Who's our paradox liason? AvP is the first name pops into my head, but it doesn't mean he's the only one...
Please note: I'm not pointing fingers of blame at AvP or anyone else, just wondering who can get it fixed?

Damn man, why are you so harsh? That's two personal attacks now. Who the HELL said that once I get a good copy, I wouldn't share it?
I didn't say it.
I'm aware you've been sharing stuff; I saw your "Removed" thread before it was.

JediTray said:

I had to scan each rar individually, and QuickSFV said they were all "good." Which of course is NOT the case.
My idea was to check the VOB file(s) inside the RAR archive, or inside the ISO as the case may be, not checking the RAR parts.
After all, you've already downloaded the RARs twice (3 times?) and gotten the same bad video each time, right?
On my disc VTS_05_1.VOB contains Soundtrack!. That's the file I'd be checking first.

Chewtobacca said:

Perhaps there is a problem with the usenet upload of 3.

I've grabbed the VTS_05_1.VOB from usenet twenty-some days ago.
It has the same SFV as I got from usenet five years ago, which I posted in my first attack.
From that VOB I ripped the Soundtrack! cell and PM'ed the link to Tray last week.
I think he'd agree it's not corrupted in the same way his other copies were.

Based on Tray's experience over multiple downloads, I wonder if teh paradox version might be corrupt (inside the RAR parts).
I'd like to see it replaced IFF in fact it is wonky, but Tray's future torrent won't accomplish that.
Just as Tray suggested (s)he doesn't wish to (re)learn usenet at this time, I don't wish to install J-download at this time.
If somebody could get me the links to RAR parts (not DLC) I'll do the comparison.

I might be having a ROTJ bonus disc coming in the mail, so I can finally put this to rest.

So sad to hear it.
Was hoping you'd spend some time to learn QuickSFV or some such.
Betcha we could've tracked down the problem with your corrupt download
and fixed the source, if necessary, for the community's benefit.
But as long as you're getting yours....

Oh yeah, I had an ulterior motive too.
The idea of SFV's from your original Gonzo discs makes me drool.
