I think it’d be neat to have two “fixed” versions of the TLJ Yoda scene for fan editors to use as sources - one that fixes the mouth to be ESB/ROTJ puppet-accurate, and one that additionally “fixes” the mouth movements a la Adywan’s ESB:R.

If I was any decent at that kind of stuff I’d do it myself, but sadly I’m shit at animation/motion graphics type stuff (that was the only film/video class I failed in college).

Yeah, the ESB:R Yoda is very nice. I don’t know exactly how adywan pulled that off, but once I’m working on Yoda’s face I’ll likely experiment with some enhanced mouth movements.

I think he used the puppet warp tool. (Or whatever the After Effects equivalent is called of that photoshop tool. Can’t remember if it’s called something different, but it performs the same function.)

I think he did the subtle movement of the cantina aliens the same way.

So, as one point in my “fix list” I have “fix Yoda’s face”. I think most of us agree that it was great to see the little puppet, but I’ve seen many say that there was something off about his look, which I agree with. I think it’s mostly due to the mouth which looks a bit different. So for my edit I’ll try to overlay and animate the correct Yoda mouth. Here’s a simple test image (original left, fixed right):

When you end up finishing these scenes, do you plan on releasing them for others to use (crosses fingers)

I’m planning on giving this a whirl myself, mainly just as after effects practice, as I don’t get to use AE enough in my day job, but at some point I’m going to attempt a test with both traditional After Effects methods and with that FakeApp software, testing on the brief clip in the Home Video Release trailer. Maybe you could use the same clip for a quick test yourself? Could be interesting to compare.

Reported. I can’t be the only one looking at all these people profiting off of “I’ll send you a link via dropbox” and thinking two things:

  1. What scumbags taking advantage of other’s hard work an ripping off their customers.

and

  1. Maybe I should be doing this and quit my day job, because it seems to be working for them.

Just kidding on the second one, but I am seriously baffled how they’re actually getting people to purchase. I mean, I can kind of wrap my head around the people selling blurays, because some people just don’t want to take the effort of burning them and printing off labels and such, but with decent internet speed it seriously takes maybe an hour or two at most to download these FOR FREE. Why are people paying for a dropbox link to the same files that will likely take just as long?!

The puppet is pretty great otherwise, but the mouth is so important for his appearance. It looks like he lost his teeth.

Hence my argument that a muppet should be used for Yoda, but with CGI mouth movements. In fact, I see no reason the same approach couldn’t be taken with a host of characters that are either animatronics or actors with prosthetics. The Nemoidians are examples of the latter, and while they were lame characters anyway, because of the writing, at the very least they would have looked better if their mouths had been animated.

The issue is not that it was a puppet mouth, the issue was that the mouth was the wrong shape and size comparative to ESB&ROTJ

The absolute best use of this would be to take the face of ESB Yoda and put it over TLJ Yoda.

Quick Photoshop attempt;

I want some of what bottom Yoda’s smoking.

I think it looks to cg

Who is “cg”?
Why does It look to him?
What does It look to CG for? Assistance? guidance?

These are questions we may never find the answers to.

It Looks fake

That’s because it’s a “quick photoshop attempt”.

Here’s a slightly less quick photoshop attempt I made where I overlayed parts of old Yoda on new Yoda:

I think I can make this work in the movie with After Effects rather than FakeApp.

Yeah. Yoda’s upper lip barely moves if at all so theoretically I’m after effects you should be able to just track ESB nose&mouth onto TLJ Yoda’s face and voila.

That is some complicated tracking though.

I recently listened to a Rian Johnson podcast where he spoke about editing TLJ

Why would you use TLJ as a source for editing tips? I don’t want this to turn into a slag off session of TLJ but apart of some question plot decisions (Leia flying), the editing department was what really let the movie down.
Now I liked the climactic battle between Ray, Kylo and the guards but I hated that every time I got invested in it, it cut away. If you are going to cut from a tense moment, it’s best to cut to another tense moment and keep going back and forth regularly to give a sense of urgency. Other wise you should leave it to play out in full, but that is less effective if the situation is meant to be a climax, as it makes it makes it appear to happen sequentially rather than concurrently.

Oh my god, thanks so much for your valuable insight. What would adywan have done without you? Thought that TLJ was good? Try to change ROTJ to be better? You’re a real hero!

The rude sarcasm seems a bit uncalled for.

Agree to disagree!

This just doesn’t seem the thread for someone’s hot takes on a movie that isn’t the movie being discussed here.

He was using said movie to explain his position on re-editing the movie being discussed here. It wasn’t off topic and was directly responding to the discussion. There’s no need to be rude because someone doesn’t share your subjective opinion.

Interesting. I’m sure Ady could do a better, more seamless job of it. I would actually be 100% on board with an extended alderaan destruction sequence ala the bonus scene on the original revisited dvd being incorporated into the movie. Rogue One did a great job of showing the death star firing from the POV of the planet surface and I think it could work great here.

Cutting any of the emperor’s early scenes would be a mistake as he is the primary villain of the film (Vader is a protagonist in ROTJ, not an antagonist. I actually wrote an essay on this in college for a story development course). We need to see the villain being villainous BEFORE the climax of the film so we know him well enough and so we see how he actively is a force against our hero’s mission so we root against him. It’s not enough to have him randomly pop up at the end and act all menacing. As great as the throne room climactic scenes are, they can’t stand on their own from a story perspective.

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit <strong>Ideas</strong> thread
Time

This isn’t really a fan-edit idea as it’s impossible (honestly I should post this in the rewrite thread, but figured it’d be interesting to the regular posters here).

I was thinking about TLJ recently and thought of a couple really simple changes that would’ve had a trickle down effect to improving the whole film.

  1. Rose doesn’t exist. We just spent an entire film getting introduced to three really interesting main characters. Bette to build on that foundation than bog down this film trying to make us care about a brand new person that isn’t very interesting to begin with.

  2. Poe goes with Finn to Canto Bight. These guys have a really fun dynamic that could’ve been interesting to see in action if they were on their little quest together. As it is it just reminds me of TPM when obi wan is on the ship the whole time, occasionally checking in with phone calls but otherwise doing nothing.

  3. Poe and the codebreaker have a history. This could’ve eliminated that annoying video game style briefing Maz Kanata gives via space skype. All you need is Finn talking about how complex the first orders security is and that they’d need a code breaker and Poe says something like “I know a guy.” Then the next we see them they’d be on Canto Bight looking for the codebreaker.

  4. DJ is the guy they’re looking for from the beginning. No need to make things overly convoluted. Just have them looking for DJ from the beginning, but maybe make him (her? i’ll get to that in a second) a bit reluctant to help due to some demons with Poe in the past.

  5. Poe is the one who attempts the suicide run at the end. This moment made zero sense for Finn. However, since Poe’s character arc is pretty much all about him learning to not put others at risk for his own ambition of destroying the enemy (achem, the opening battle?), having him end the movie in a moment of self sacrifice only to be saved and told that it’s not about destroying what you hate, but saving what you love, actually feels like a natural place for his character to end up.

  6. Phasma is tracking Poe and Finn. This is really simple. When Finn and Poe leave for Canto Bight, the first orders sensors see them and Phasma and a small legion of Stormtroopers follow them. This just adds a bit of tension to an otherwise bland b-story. Having the first order hot on their tail while they are already pressed for time presents a number of potentially interesting action set pieces, particularly on canto bight. It also gives Phasma something to actually do.

  7. DJ is a female with a romantic history with Poe. If they really wanted a forced heterosexual romantic subplot like they attempted with Rose and Finn, might as well make it relevant and add some drama/tension to the bland story. If DJ is a female with a romantic history with Poe, that could’ve added an interesting Indiana Jones & Marion ROTLA dynamic. You could also sub her in for Rose in the rest of the movie. Having a natural rekindled romance throughout the movie gives the “That’s how we’re gonna win this; not by killing the things we hate, but by saving the things we love” line that was just awkward in the original some actual meaning and earned emotion.

Like I said, I know it’s not really appropriate for a fan-edit thread, since this is something that should’ve happened at the writing stage, but I just thought you guys might be interested in reading my thoughts and ideas.

I actually realized while doing some test image-sequence exports, that I have Neat Video 4 for Premiere, which has pretty awesome auto dust busting (unlike Neat Video 3, which I have for AE), so together with Warp Stabilizer, I can do all the auto cleanup and stabilization that will be needed, directly in Premiere and won’t be needing Avisynth at all 😃

I actually didn’t know neat video was available internally for premiere. This is awesome information for my day job haha

Apparently someone is selling Harmy’s Despecialized versions at Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con.

Harmy's Despecialized Blu-ray

$30 a piece

While this is irritating, it’s kind of par for the course with conventions. You could report the seller to the people in charge of vendors at the convention, but in my experience, they’ll pretty much just ignore you. They’re pretty small fish to fry in the grand scheme of things. Bootlegs at conventions have been going on since the earliest days of comic con.

It bugs me how many people want to strip all humor out of Star Wars.

Yes, The Last Jedi had some attempts at humor that went too far. But instead of completely taking out those lines, perhaps just trim them a little. For example, the infamous “your mom” joke that Poe makes was too much in my opinion, but I was okay with him joking for a moment saying that he was on hold for Hux. Cut it there.

I didn’t mind “big ass door” or Luke winking. I will say that I thought his brushing off the shoulder wasn’t really appropriate, but again — don’t take out all humor. Give us a good balance.

Personally I think the humor level in TFA was just right most of the time (except for “so who talks first”).

That line literally ruined my first viewing of TFA. Yuck. Broke my suspension of disbelief in an otherwise incredibly great scene.

I think I’ve come around more on that movie since, but Marvel Humor is the worst and TLJ is filled with it.

I disagree. Marvel humor is fine, in marvel movies. It just doesn’t always fit in Star Wars.

Wacko idea combining both movies:

Why not let Rey go to training before the whole Starkiller thingy is even introduced. Make it a mellow entry to the story where the villain (Kylo) still stays mysterious. She arrives and starts her training after retrieving the lightsaber and having been confronted with Kylo once.

Fast forward 5 years. First order has built starkiller base. Rey is in full training mode. Now, somehow mix together the ship chase and the starkiller thing and the planet being destroyed and rey and kylo having their first lightsaber fight and things suddenly make much more sense. She now has had the training to justify holding up against Kylo a little.

Not sure about the details (would like to include Snoke etc. as well) but that can still be worked out. Lots of stuff would obviously fall away.

That’s an interesting idea. I wonder how well it’d work in practice.

I’m itching for TLJ blu ray to come out so I can see how well a lot of the concepts in this thread work.

I wish Luke, Han and Leia would still be seen together in the ending.
Since it’s much more sad in hindsight in The Force Awakens, since that would be the last time they were together in a main movie.

Why not have the Ewok celebration, the planet celebration, the shot of Han, Luke, and Leia together, and finally the ghosts and then Luke by himself, in that order. That way, everything can still be there.

So, Luke just left Vader’s body chilling on Endor somewhere while he partied with his buddies?

By the way, I was able to download “Star Wars” successfully from the site Ulzo.to.net, but ESB and ROTJ downloaded differently. Where when I extracted for Star Wars it came out as “mt2s” file and worked well with VLC. But ESB came out as “ESB_DESPECIALIZED_v2.0_AVCHD.iso” and I was unable to extract it. And ROTJ came out as “ROTJ_DESPECIALIZED_v2.0_AVCHD.iso”. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m using a mac. But programs that I’m trying to use just aren’t converting it/extracting the files. So any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What is your goal? To burn to disc or to just watch on your computer? If you’re trying to burn to disc, you’ll need dual layer dvds and those .iso files cal just be written directly onto the disc through disc utility.
If you’re looking to just watch from a video file, you’ll want to track down the mkv versions which should play fine in both VLC and Quicktime.

I guess I have a slightly different take on this. I’ve had Harmy’s files for years, and don’t see the harm in paying for pressed discs with menus, artwork, etc. I don’t have the skill set or equipment necessary for making nice pressed discs with kick-ass artwork and animated menus.

If there are any members willing to hook me up with a set of physical Harmy discs for the cost of materials and postage, by all means contact me.

The harm: Lucasfilm/Disney only leaves us alone because nobody is profiting and they don’t see us as a threat to their revenue. If they start to see people selling these projects, they may crack down on us harder. It’s also just morally messed up to profit off of other people’s hard work they are providing for free.

Skill: it’s not hard to do. Just need to take a few minutes to learn.

Equipment: really not expensive nowadays.

There may be members willing to do that, but again, I think it’s worth the time and small investment to learn to do it yourself.
