Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)
Time

Yeah no problem 😃 just thought I’d throw it out there in case you wanted to use it.

If anyone’s interested I may put an mkv of my 1981 despecialized on the spleen in case someone wants it but doesn’t necessarily want my final blu Ray disc with all the bells and whistles. This uses towne32’s version as a base with a few scenes color corrected by myself and a recreated 1981 crawl/flyover spliced into the beginning.

What is so wrong about gay romance being in Star Wars?
Time

Romance just for the sake of romance should be avoided in general. For han and leia, it was something which developed their characters, and thus served a purpose beyond ā€œwell we need romance so let’s put in romanceā€

I don’t care what gender the people involved in a Star Wars romance are. I care what it does for the story and what it does for their characters’ development. If the answer to either of those questions is ā€œnothingā€, then keep it out.

Ah okay, cool. That’s good news. Hopefully, it is released in 4K then.

One a side note, if this pitch goes well & Mike gets a job, could he realistically be able to do Empire and Jedi in about a year (for the 40th anniversary) while working full time? It doesn’t seem likely that two movies could be done that quickly when the first one took 15 years. So perhaps Star Wars will be released alone or alongside Disney/Fox’s own rushed restorations of the other two movies, as people have mentioned.

Well if I’m not mistaken, part of the reason it took 15 years was gathering funds, developing tools, and finding prints/arranging for them to be scanned.

Here’s what I’m wondering: what is the maximum resolution that can be obtained from a 35mm print? Didn’t Mike say on one of his Vimeo videos that the Blu-ray had more detail than Legacy because it was sourced from the original negative? And so would it really matter if Legacy ends up being released in 1080p or 4K if the detail boost is negligible? Or am I completely wrong about this? (this is a strong possibility)

Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)

I ran into many of the same problems with the same shots in my version. I feel I was able to get the 2.5 Mos Eisley shot you posted working pretty well though. I will post a screenshot of my regraded shot later.

But yeah, the sandcrawler and dewback shots are hell. I have faith that Harmy will get it looking good in 3.0 though.

Info Wanted: Is there an edit of the Original Trilogy already out?
Time

I did one a while back called ā€œThe Star Wars Monologyā€. Unfortunately my computer crashed and broke down, losing all of my files in the process before I was able to give it a final polish and post it on the spleen.

One day I hope to revisit it and start again from scratch, but I have other projects that are higher on my priority list in the meantime.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

Sorry for continuing the derailment of the thread, but given that I feel lucasfilm/Disney/fox would be idiots to not accept legacy, my guess would be this:

For the 40th anniversary they release both a boxed set as well as individual releases of legacy paired with their own (probably rushed and sub-par) restorations of empire and Jedi. It’ll be like the Indiana jones the complete adventures set where they had all the films, but only raiders had the brand new restoration.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I went to a relative’s house tonight for a family get-together because my cousin was in town. My cousin works at Disney, on the software for Disney Movies Anywhere.

I was talking to him about Star Wars, and he told me about how, a week before TFA came out, people in his office there at Disney dragged a bunch of chairs and couches from various conference rooms into one large room and watched all 6 Star Wars movies on a projector.

And when they watched the Original Trilogy, they watched Harmy’s Despecialized Editions. In an office at Disney.

No joke.

He also said that it was his understanding that an 8k scan had been done of the OUT. I asked if it was from the original negative, and he said he didn’t know if it was from the actual original negative, but at the very least it would only have been within a couple generations from the o-neg, which is certainly closer than the prints our community have been using.

He did agree that a major sticking point is the fact that Fox owns eternal distribution rights to Star Wars (aka. A New Hope), and it was for that same reason that Disney Movies Anywhere (the software he develops) does not include that particular movie in its catalogue.

But, and I reiterate this, he already knew about Harmy’s Despecialized Editions before I said anything. I gave Q2s Prequels and Harmy’s DE to a relative for his birthday on that day (whose 14yo daughter said she had never seen any SW movies), and when I explained the OT was the original versions, my cousin asked if they were Harmy’s.

This totally lines up with what I’ve heard from my people within Disney. Except I haven’t heard that the scans were 8K, but then again I wasn’t told what resolution they were in.

As always take all of this with a grain of salt, but having multiple people hearing similar things from different people within Disney certainly does a lot to boost my confidence.

As for them having watched the despecialized editions, that’s hardly surprising to me. Everyone I’ve ever met within lucasfilm, Disney, etc. all love the original versions as much as any of us. We gotta remember, it was George who refused to release the originals, not anyone within lucasfilm or Disney.

Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)

Okie dokie. Well in that case, disc three will just be an empty slot for the 2011 discs. I will create a label which matches the other discs for those who want it.

And with that, the ā€œsecret releaseā€, a ā€œworkprint extended editionā€ of the film, splicing deleted scenes into the silver screen edition, will be moved to the bonus material disc 4.

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

Back when D23 was going on in August I attended a small panel about the restoration of disney films during which they showed a couple clips of a BEAUTIFUL scan of Song of the South intermingled in the presentation. Ā Of course very quickly everyone gasped at seeing it and got excited, at which point the guy explained that they aren’t restoring it or releasing it, but that the studio wanted an archival scan. Ā This frustrated me to all hell because the couple clips they showed had very minimal damage and would be a very fast, easy cleanup and the colors were gorgeous. Ā The insistence of Disney to not release this film is baffling. Ā It would take maybe a couple of months to get it to a presentable point and would be easy profit for Disney and they STILL have no interest in a release because (to quote the presenter): ā€œWe don’t make the decisions of what gets restored and released. Ā Corporate makes those decisions based on what they think people will buy. Ā Sad, and there are many things I would love to restore, but it is a business after all.ā€

Does that mean, Disney has digitally archival scans of their movies… all of them, without any of the alterations they did? You mean they could easily release proper remasters of their movies, with grain and film quality if they wanted, easily? Does this mean they have kept archival digital raw scans of almost every movie they do? Does this mean there’s a slight possibility that the clean, raw film like quality of these films are all not lost, and preserved?

I don’t know about ALL of them, but they’re at least starting that process. We don’t know exactly how many films they have scanned in high quality and resolution, but we know of at least the recent blu ray releases, song of the south, and a new scan of Bambi, as clips from both SOTS and Bambi were shown at that presentation.

Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)
Time

So I’ve been thinking a lot and I have a question to pose to whoever would like to to submit their opinion:

Are any of you really itching for Disc 3? I mean at the end of the day, it’s just a custom disc for the Blu Ray version that you should all have anyways if you’re going to be downloading this set.

I ask because if not, it would certainly be a lot easier on my end, and on the end of you all downloading, if disc 3 simply be an empty spot for you guys to put your 2011 discs. It would also allow me to forego any possible distribution issues that may arise from simply putting out essentially an untouched 2011 version of the film, and would mean the bonus material disc would be completed much sooner. I can always make a custom label for those of us who want the labels to all match.

As for the ā€œsecret releaseā€ mentioned a few posts back, I’m fairly certain there would be space for it on the bonus material disc, and it wouldn’t be out of place there, as strictly speaking it isn’t an official version of the film.

Also, if I go that route, I’ll just tell you all what that release is and add it to the list of bonus features, no sense in making it a ā€œsecret releaseā€ at that point haha.
