I am not sure why but I find all of this nitpicking entertaining, and I am happy to be a part of it. In my opinion, the best thing to do is to make it look as good as possible without changing what was originally intended. In other words, if there are color channel misalignments on the original negative, fix them. If there are scratches or burn marks, fix them. If there are matte lines, fix them. Fix any artifacts that are as a result of putting the movie together and something going screwy. Just don’t add, change or remove scenes like the SE’s did.

Fixing channel misalignments, yes. Scratches and burn marks, yes. Matte lines, hell no.

Everything on the original negative, keep. Anything that happened as a result of duping the negative or creating various prints, fix.

I would also add that it’s very likely all of that color channel misalignment could very well have happened on the separation masters, and as such, would be very unlikely to be on that ORIGINAL negative (as in the film that went through the camera) but would still be on every print because it would be on the dupe negative, so if the goal is to restore the original negative, then fixing EVERY instance of channel misalignment is the proper move.

Aren’t channel misalignments a product of the Technicolor IB print, not the photography, though? So fixing that shouldn’t be at all controversial. Though I must say I’m not offended by fixing flickering etc. that may have been a product of the original photography.

I believe he mentioned the models were misaligned differently than the background plate, so in that case ut would be on the negative.

In that case some of it would be on the negative, but it’s impossible to tell which channel misalignment happened during compositing abd which happened as a result of the tech ib process, which is why he corrected all of it, just to be safe.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Well Finn’s story arc isn’t really about him leaving the first order, that’s the inciting incident that puts him on his journey, so there’s not a much need to overly explain and delve into what causes him to leave. I like it the way it is. Short, sweet, we understand his motivation, now we can go on our journey. His story is about finding a path and a purpose, not about his leaving his old path behind.

It’s like, we didn’t need to overly explain why Luke wanted to leave tatooine. By all accounts, he had a pretty good life there and just “longing for adventure” doesn’t really cut it for an analytical mind of just why he wants so badly to leave. But we don’t need a whole ten scenes explaining his his uncle is abusive and his aunt is a heavy drinker and he never got picked for the basketball team. One scene of minor exposition in the dinner scene and him staring at the twin Suns longingly. Boom. Now we can start our journey. Because Luke’s journey isn’t about him leaving tatooine. His family dies and now he has no reason to stay.

Similarly, Finn’s journey isn’t about him leaving the first order, that’s just where his journey begins, so we don’t need to overly explain it. I think we can assume he’s been uncomfortable there for some time, then one scene of him reacting to the atrocities of the first order then boom: we understand why he wants to leave. No need to drag the narrative along to better explain something that is only there to be the beginning of a character’s journey and arc.

Harry Potter Special Extended Editions (a WIP)
Time

Thank you for the interest 😃 I have recently watched Sorcerer’s Stone again just the other day and have a lot of ideas for this going forward.

Work is still slow and steady only being worked on in my spare time when I can’t work on other projects, but as work on disc one of my Star Wars bluray set draws nearer to a close, and with the remaining discs being a much easier, quicker task, work on this should pick up soon.

The wand replacement is what is the hardest and the stuff that takes the longest time to get looking right, especially since I’ve been utilizing still images for it; and as such, it’s the side of this project I have not been able to devote hardly any time to with my other projects and real life getting in the way. But I plan on using a small chunk of my tax refund money to purchase some noble collection wands so I have more versatility in the wand replacement for the first two films.

Would anyone be willing to design some slipcovers for the OT in the style of the Force Awakens slipcover? Meaning each film would have STAR WARS against a black background on the front with characters from the specific film within the letters? I think that would be pretty cool to keep them all consistent.

I did one for SW.

The lighter spine is where you glue them.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Yeah but making a movie to retain the rights is different. If they didn’t make a fantastic four movie, then ALL of the rights would revert to marvel and fox would never make another penny off of that property. Fox would never strike a deal like Sony did to share the rights to a property, because they want to retain as much of the profits as they can. In this instance, the rights are already shared. Disney/Lucasfilm holds the rights to the property, and Fox the distribution rights. Both studios stand to make money off of a release, so it’s a much more feasable deal to be made. I doubt fox would pass up an opportunity to make money off of these films, especially when their time for owning the distribution rights to ESB and ROTJ are so limited. They’d want to cash in on those films ASAP.

Shouldn’t be too hard. I’m a bit busy today but I’ll try to knock something like this out tomorrow.

We can call it whatever we want. I call it an empty spot on my movie shelf that needs to be filled asap.

I’ll go with this.

+1 But I compeletly respect what Mikes plan is and understand why the distribution of this won’t be like Depseiclaized.

And I still have no idea why anyone cares about it. If no one will ever see it then who cares what he does? #movealong

Because it’s interesting? Because it’s the best restoration of a film we all love that will likely ever exist? Because maybe someday we can hopefully get it in an official aspect?

No special effects are being changed in any way. He’s not doing what, say, Adywan did in the cantina and manipulating the pixels in the image to make them do things they didn’t originally. He’s simply using multiple 35mm scans to repair damage to the print and occasionally using rotoscoping to isolate elements so he can fix image registration issues.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread

So what if TPM was edited so that the probes that Maul sends are not “probes” but drones that then attack during the podrace. The race is going and then the drones show up and start blasting podracers and spectators. Anakin is able to avoid them with his piloting skills and then this creates a frensy which leads into anakin, qui gon, and the rest of them running back to the ship, leading into the short encounter between qui-gon and maul and them flying away.

It would have to be done in such a way where they already got the ship part, and so the race is purely to win anakin’s freedom.

But I think with some editing and some (pretty extensive) effects work, it could be done.
