Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)
Time

Ok I’ve pretty much finished the next version. Starfield is a bit more consistent now, I used yotsuya’s starfield and TN1’S clip as reference to shift some things around and make sure the moon and planet’s position’s were correct. The matte line has been removed (I thought I had already done this, but I guess that work wasn’t saved or something). All that’s left to do is add some 35mm grain over the beginning portion to fix the issue with the static grain.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I’ve mentioned this before but it is the attention to detail for the aesthetic that I love the most. I had the opportunity at a New Years party to meet the guy who was hired to create all the starfields for the movie. He talked to me about how they wanted him to do it in a relatively short amount of time and he begged for more so he could have time to do it right. He painstakingly painted in every star trying to match the look of the starfields in SW. And that effort was not wasted because the first time I saw the movie I looked at the starfield in the opening crawl and my first thought was “it looks like a slightly more blue despecialized starfield.”

It’s that dedication and attention to detail that’s present throughout the movie that I love. I mean, this guy could have created a perfectly fine starfield in a couple minutes for each shot just using some tools in photoshop or after effects or something, but you can tell everyone involved in the movie has a deep love for Star Wars and wanted to do it right.

Sure, the story is a bit re-hashy and all, but I’d take that over a film made by people just phoning in their work any day.

Navigating folders at all on a mac makes me sad. As does finding if someone bothered to port a piece of software to it. 😃

Oh, I agree, Mac navigation is terrible (you seem to need to inherently know what you’re doing and where things are to simply get around). I think it is already pretty well known I’m a Linux guy.

I guess when you’ve used macs your whole life it seems pretty intuitive. Haha

I don’t think it’s hard, just different.

I think these people are volunteering to do it for you.

Honestly, I would be willing to do my idea for Frink if he wants to use it and can’t accomplish it himself.

Having a random laser blast come from Han and shifting Kylos head slightly to the side is a pretty simple effect.

And given the “ridiculous” nature of the edit, I don’t think anyone will complain if its a little poorly done 😉

Info: Evidence of TFA Changes in Blu-ray?

I think some of the dialogue is a good bit clearer on the blu-ray. There are a number of lines I couldn’t make out after six viewings in the theater that are clear as day on the disc.

I second this. On my first viewing I didn’t hear the Obi wan line at all. Second time I had to really struggle to hear it and only did because I was told about it and knew to listen. On the bluray, clear as day.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

Well, I’ve never had this happen with dts tracks in encore, but maybe there’s just no problem at all. Maybe it’s saying its 3+ hours on the interface, but when you finally burn the disc it will play properly. It’s impossible to know within encore itself since encore doesn’t let you preview dts audio tracks.

Does anyone know if anybody actually tried burning a disc with these tracks from encore? Or has everybody just seen the issue and then assumed it would be all jacked up when burned?

If not I can make a simple bd for testing purposes and see if this is the case. Not sure when I’ll be able to burn though since there was a shipping issue with the new bd burner I ordered and I’m trying to sort it all out.

What i’m waiting for is someone to create a fan edit of the prequel trilogy around 1 hour 45 minutes long, cutting out all the pointless crap and just keeping it fast paced and intense… just like the Tolkien fan edit of The Hobbit trilogy… of course from the HDTV preservation, to ensure smooth playback throughout and 0% noise reduction.

Well that’s certainly relevant to the thread.

Off to a rousing start with this topic!

In my experience, the DTS-HD tracks we use around here aren’t possible to get working with seamless branching. Many software packages report the wrong run times on those files, for whatever reason, and their compatibility seems somewhat limited. But it is possible that Williarob will have better luck.

(this is why my seamless branching disc just has the dolby digital tracks instead).

Has anyone tried simply reencoding them? DTS-HD is lossless, after all, so you won’t be losing anything. But you might gain some well-behaved files as a result. Or is it DTS-HD itself that has compatibility issues?

I don’t think anyone has tried. It would be worth a shot, but it’s beyond my abilities.

I doubt it’s the format itself. DTS-HD should work with these software packages.

Yeah. I’ve used DTS tracks with Adobe Encore before and never run into the issue I’ve had with Star Wars. Hopefully the solution towne32 suggested to me works to get around it though. We’ll see.

I took some time and created a better starfield. I was able to retrieve the brightest stars from the 81 crawl that TN1 included with the SSE. The medium stars are from the TR46 LD preservation of the DE. I included a diffuse field of stars in the background that were the result of some filtering I tried to do that failed, but it did produce a field of very dim stars. I was trying to filter the dimmest stars from the Grindhouse TESB opening crawl. I pulled the planet and moons from an overly of the SSE and the BR (the moons and planets lined up perfectly - so did the stars but I filtered them out). The did not line up perfectly with the 81 crawl. I had to resize each one individually. I cropped the image to to the SSE planet. That is a fair match to the cropping in TR47. I usually work with layers and this one has 4 visible and some other reference layers (such as the full TR47 starfield. I would have used the JSC or the OUTRules, but both share the JSC cropping of the image. I opted for the most complete starfield I could find. Next up, the running background plate for the crawl and flyover.

That looks really great. Would you mind if I used it in my version?

I’m gonna come across as a bit of a dick here so I apologize in advance.

I see very little difference between the TFA shots. Actually at first glance, I thought you had accidentally posted the same pictures twice. Wasn’t until I looked really closely that I could see the very slight change in the skintones. I guess if that minuscule difference is something that really bothers you then more power to you, I just don’t see how it’s a difference anyone could notice or care about on casual viewing.

Ok, I went into the starfield file and fixed both of those issues. I also took another crack at unifying the starfield a little more so the top and bottom don’t look quite so different. It’s still not quite seamless, but I think I minimized it so it’s not as noticeable and jarring. Thankfully none of these issues had anything to do with after effects, so dynamic link just updates the starfield and I’m ready to render the fixes.
