The theatrical colors of the Star Wars trilogy

Color balancing the raw LPP scan used by Team Negative1 for the Silver Screen Edition reveals a similar color palette:

I think this is the best looking (and probably most accurate) version of this shot to me. It’s dark, which makes sense because she’s doing this in the shadows, away from view of any storm troopers. The green is there, but it’s subtle, only peeking through in certain luminances and still reads as neutral overall.

On the Leia Artoo shot. It seems to me that the most accurate and in my opinion best looking correction is somewhere in between neutral and green. With the green only peeking through in the darker areas. That’s also consistent with film of the time, which we’ve found often turns shadows green.

On another note. These discussions of what “the correct color” for certain scenes seems to pop up every time there’s any kind of color correction project. It’s popped up in my thread, towne32’s thread, here, harmy’s, etc. Even in cases where it’s not exactly relevant. Is there currently a thread where the accurate 1977 color timing of Star Wars is the sole topic of conversation? If not, would we benefit from such a thread? Keeping it all in one place and all.

I’d like to see a thread on the '77 colors. Would you care to start one DL?

Looks like DrDre beat me to it:

Weird probably impossible idea, could C-3PO replace both TC-14 and JarJar in the Phantom Menace?

3PO belongs to the trade federation and greets Qui-Gon and Obi on the ship in the beginning (re colored and redubbed with an Anthony Daniels soundalike or Daniels’ voice clips from cartoons/radio dramas etc.)

Then he somehow accidentally stumbles onto one of the federation drop ships and winds up on the surface, saved by Qui-Gon instead of JarJar (would have to rotoscope out JarJar frame by frame and composite in new footage of an actor in 3PO costume). He accompanies them from then on, and his meet cute with R2 is moved earlier to the scene when Padme is cleaning R2 (3PO again replacing JarJar)

I like it, but how do you get them from the forest to Theed? Either you skip Otoh Gunga, in which case there’s no way of introducing the Gungans for the film’s finale, or you need to make up some way that a protocol droid goes with them to an underwater city they might not even know about.

3PO, being an interpreter, could potentially be made to have been to Otah Gunga many times to assist in political stuffs. The gungans can be made to speak another language. There would also be no need for subtitles in that case, because C3PO would just translate.

I think most of us would agree it looks better without the green tint, but that doesn’t mean that’s how it looked in 77. At the end of the day, what’s correct is correct whether one likes it or not. In this case, green is correct. Exactly how much green is up for debate and should probably be informed by surrounding shots.

Could lead to some fun exchanges:

Qui-Gon:
You almost got us killed! Are you brainless?

C-3PO:
I’ll have you know, I’m fluent in over six million forms of-

Qui-Gon:
The ability to speak doesn’t make you intelligent. Now get out of here.

I’ve thought about replacing jar jar with 3po for some time now. I think it would work but would of course take a ton of work to pull off convincingly.

For instance, here’s the entrance to mos eisley.

I have two of this card. One is a bit more yellow than the other, but both are pretty neutral overall. And, at least to my eye, the card overall looks a bit more yellow on the bottom card, even past the borders of the image, which leads me to think this is probably a discrepancy of the printer, and the shot probably looks more like the top card, since the colors overall are more balanced.

I dug through my collection of topps cards to see what this shot looks like on them. Some may think they’re not reliable color references, but they’re in mint condition so they’re not faded and at least can give somewhat of an idea of the colors, if not a 100% accurate picture. In my mind, they’re useful. Unfortunately, this shot of Artoo and Leia isn’t on any of the ones that I have. However I did notice most of the tatooine shots are pretty neutral. Leaning a little toward yellow but in most shots the sand is almost white. I think the harsh yellows we see on the tech prints are almost certainly a product of technicolor, not so much of the original photography.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...
Time

I think Rogue One really needed a crawl. It’s really confusing for anybody who didn’t read Catalyst, and casual fans seemed completely lost. However, I like the idea of things being different than the main saga films. Here’s my idea for the opening.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Play the prologue at the Erso homestead, probably edited down a bit.

Music ramps up. Cut to crawl.

(My quickly/poorly written crawl)
STAR
WARS

ROGUE ONE

The Galactic Empire rules with an iron fist. A fledgling rebel force desperately fights back against the Emperor’s tyrannical rule.

Unbeknownst to the rebels, the Empire has been constructing a space station capable of destroying entire planets, the Death Star.

As the project nears completion, captured scientist Galen Erso sends a sympathetic engineer to warn the rebels of the coming threat…

I think it’s best to then open on Bodhi arriving at Saw Gerrera’s before grown up Jyn’s intro.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)

Finally burned them all woo hoo! Any recommendations cover inserts that would fit a criterion case? Looking to put together an 8 disc set (two 2-disc cases and one 3-disc case) to hold the movies, special features, and documentaries.

Check out ronwlim’s set. Pretty much the best set out there for criterion cases. Some assembly required if you want the full package though.

Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)
Time

Wow it has been some time since an update, hasn’t it?

Well my schedule is still pretty busy out in the real world (schooling and work and bills and yadeeyada), but I have had a little time to work on this in the middle of all that craziness, and my schedule is starting to clear up just a tad. Hopefully that translates to me being more active on the forums than I’ve been as of late.

On to the status of the project. Basically, in the time since my last updates, the entire project has been pretty drastically overhauled. This is due to some things that have changed since I started this project.
One big thing that has changed is that njvc has released his phenomenal blu-ray set for Despecialized. This has affected my project in one major way: a bluray set now exists with extremely comprehensive bonus feature discs, making the bonus discs I was planning to produce somewhat superfluous.

What I plan to do instead is create bonus discs based on those that exist in the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. That is, edit a lot of the bonus material that currently exists into essentially one long documentary, broken up into different sections that focus on various aspects of the filmmaking process (i.e. Writing, Production, Special Effects/ILM, Music & Sound, Critical Reception, etc.) Obviously Empire of Dreams has proven a great jumping off point for that.

I have also completely redesigned the menus. They’re not 100% complete, but they now match more closely in line with the TFA bluray menus and feature movie clips, unlike the previous menus I designed.

Despecialized is still the basis for the bluray, but may be swapped out in the future, as it was before.

The other details of the project are more or less untouched. It will still feature two separate discs for the movie itself, one for the Theatrical (1977 and 1981) versions, and one for the Special Edition (1997 and 2004) versions. The “workprint extended edition” is still to be created and featured on the bonus disc(s).
