What do think of the EU and what do you accept as Star Wars canon?
Time

Many characters, general events and places from the EU are practically "canon" to me. The details of these events and places are not necessarily "canon", though.

The most important characters are: Kyle Katarrn, Jan Ors, Jacen, Jaina and Anakin Solo, Mara Jade, Thrawn, Talon Karrde, Ben Skywalker, Hobbie Klivian, Tycho Celchu, Gavin Darklighter and Corran Horn.

Places: Corellian System with Correllia, Talus, Tralus and Centerpoint Station. Nar Shadaa and Nal Hutta.

Stories: Tales of the [Mos Eisley Cantina, Bounty Hunters, Jabba's Palace]. The Empire became the New Republic after ROTJ, but not all of it: Former Rebels fight warlords and bandits that have snatched what the Empire left behind.

I do NOT consider canon: Dark Jedi (including Starkiller), post-ROTJ Sith such as Darth Talon etc., Yuzhaan Vong, darksabers, Han almost losing Leia to someone else, superweapons, Clone Emperors,  Ssi-ruuk, ...

The rest, I don't care either way.

The Krayt Dragon Call
Time

What Krayt Dragon? I did not see or hear any in that scene ...

... In fact, I didn't see or hear any Krayt Dragon in the entire movie.

... or in any Star Wars movie whatsoever.

From the time I first saw the movie in the early '80s up until the mid-00's, I had always thought that it was supposed to be a Tusken yell of suprise from seeing Obi-Wan. The sound sounded a lot like a Tusken, but in a higher pitch as if surprised and afraid. Either they were generally afraid of strangers walking in on them when they are doing something bad, and/or they recognized Obi-Wan and knew him to be a bad-ass whom they did not want to mess with ... Even worse would be if a vigilante whom they knew could easily kick their asses, and who probably would do so if he witnessed them doing something bad would walk in on them when they were doing something bad.

This is the explanation that makes the most sense to me, and the one that I prefer. Therefore, I would prefer that a fan-edit or a future release of Star Wars either restore the original call or make it sound more like a Tusken.
As far as I am concerned, "Krayt Dragons" are not part of canon.

Idea: Alternate ROTJ Ending Concept
Time

timdiggerm said:

I really love the '97 celebration, but I've never felt that it fit the Ewok celebration visuals all that well. It wasn't until I heard the Ewok-voice version of Yub Nub that I realized how good Yub Nub could be...but it's inappropriate for the Galactic Celebration visuals and the ending is so bad.

I think so too. It is inconceivable that the Ewoks would have sung the Victory Celebration song.

Personally I do not understand how you couldn't find the 1997 music edition far superior. It was even made by John Williams!

The origin of the Victory Celebration was shown a few years ago when an animatic was leaked (or officially released?) that showed the concept for how the new ending in the 1997 SE version was going to be made. As its soundtrack, it had the theme from "500 Nations", which is a documentary about native north-americans' history.

There are some really obvious similarities from this song to the "Victory Celebration" that John Williams was asked to compose.

If I could find it now, I would have posted the concept video itself. It is on "Deleted Magic". 2008 thread.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>

Check it out!

But why cast the Hasbro toy blaster if you had access to a more accurate replica by MR? Must it not have been easier and cheaper to buy Hasbro toy blasters in the first place?

They are also not the completely correct version of the blaster for Empire Strikes Back.

John Williams CONFIRMED for Episode VII
Time

Tobar said:

Here's a great interview they did with him about working on VII.

That is the video they showed at the end of Kathleen Kennedy's talk at CEII.
I chuckled at the way he referred to Kennedy and Abrams as young. Everything is relative...

Bester said:

Great news.  Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Ben Burtt announcement.

In Ben Burrt's panel at CEII, he did not announce right out that he was involved in Episode VII, but it was pretty much implied. He said at least that he is looking forward to future Star Wars work, and that he knew some things that he was not allowed to talk about.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Nerd Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

If I were you I would cut the "Roger Roger" during the battle. If there is a control ship controlling the droids then voice communication is needed only for interacting with people and droids who are not part of the droid army.

The Nerd said:

Only one Podrace lap. Most of all three laps will be included, but the scenes of them going threw the start\finish lines will be cut.

Please tell me that you are cutting out the two-headed commentator.

Jabba the Hutt will not be seen. Why? Because people, including myself, had to wait a long time to finally see what Jabba looked like in ROTJ. He was mentioned in ANH and TESB, but the mystery of what he looked like remained until we saw him. So he won't be seen at all in my edit.

Hear hear!

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

News today: The 3D-converted edition of Attack of the Clones will be screened at Celebration Europe this summer.

News items on the official CEII site

Not that I would see it myself... Not a fan of "3D" -- most movies I have seen with the same projection technology (RealD) have been too dark and there has been too much "crosstalk" between the left and the right eye. Maybe, maybe if it is free of charge and I am bored, with nothing better to do at the convention, but I doubt that would happen..

Help Wanted: The Prequel Edit Problem - remove the music &amp; sound effects without removing the dialogue...
Time

If you have access to multiple language tracks with identical music then it should theoretically be possible to filter out what matches between the tracks -- which would be the music. However, some speech may be lost where the frequency of the music overlaps with the speech and some of the music may remain because of audio compression artifacts. The process should improve the more language tracks you use. I think that this would be better than a typical voice-removal filter.

I don't know if there is a software package that allows you to do this ...

Analysis should be done in some frequency domain, and preferably according to the transform used by the codec ... if the tracks used the same codec, which I don't think that they do.

Am I correct in that for all movies, the English track is in DTS-HD (lossless) and that the others are either in DTS 5.1 or in Dolby Digital 5.1 ? The DTS-HD could be transformed into the frequency domain of any of the other. I have not checked, but I doubt that DTS and Dolby Digital would use the same transforms.

Have you met or seen someone from the Star Wars universe, and props?
Time

I can answer in one sentence: I have been trooping in costume at the opening of a Star Wars The Exhibition, with Anthony Daniels.

I got a few days access to the exhibit, which was nice. Building prop replicas is one of my hobbies. Unfortunately, there weren't too many props from the OT, but I still filled the small memory card on the camera.

You can sometimes meet some actor or some unknown extra at sci-fi conventions, and get his/her autograph for a fee... I have seen David Prowse (who wore the Darth Vader suit) more times than I can count -- signing autographs seems to be the only thing he does for a living. So far, I have got nineteen autographs from actors in the OT on a couple of posters, but I am still missing a few that I really want: "the three", Kenneth Colley (Piett) and Denis Lawson. Harrison Ford and Denis Lawson are known to wanting to distance themselves from Star Wars and they almost never write autographs.

The Hobbit (2014) - Resource and idea thread

strangeland said:

How about putting the 'Erebor' prologue later, giving Throin a badass mystique until his backstory is revealed by Balin.

If any of the Erebor scenes are retained, I think that Thorin's should be cut from them. The fall of Erebor was supposed to have been a long time ago, but Thorin does not appear to have aged a day since then when he meets Bilbo.

He and a couple other dwarves look too human but Thorin can not be easily replaced or ignored. His appearance could only be explained (retconned) as being because he is a young dwarf.

The Hobbit (2014) - Resource and idea thread
Time

I agree on the prologue. There was too much before we saw the young(er) Bilbo.

I would also cut the ridiculous Goblin chase, from the arrival of Gandalf to Bilbo seeing them flee.

I saw the movie with Swedish subtitles and original sound. There were no additional rounded English subtitles for elvish or orchish dialogue, but there were signs when there were cuts between time periods. Language subtitles on DVD and BluRay are usually on a separate track, so I don't think that they will be "burned in".

Discussion: Most Realistic Replica Lightsaber - Recommendations?
Time

I'm sorry but I don't know much about Hasbro's. Of the other two, I would say Master Replicas, Luke Skywalker Episode V.

Icons' is a mix of the ANH and ESB props, while MR's is a version of Luke's lightsaber that we see in the Wampa's cave in ESB.

There are some good pictures of them in Rebel Scum's photo archive:

http://www.rebelscum.com/iconslukesaber.asp

http://www.rebelscum.com/mrlukeesbsaber.asp

Master Replicas also made a FX version of Luke's lightsaber:

http://www.rebelscum.com/mrlukeesbfxsaber.asp

Master Replicas'  replicas of the Anakin's lightsaber in ROTS are good replicas of those props used in that film... but those were in turn a bit different in detail from the props used in the filming of ANH and ESB.

Don't confuse any of these sabers with Anakin's from AOTC, which is completely different.

Disclaimer, though: I don't own any of these replicas, but I have seen and held them in person. My own lightsaber replica consists of a vintage Graflex flash gun and custom-made parts.
