The next few races will go a long way toward determining how things shake out for the rest of the season. Right now Alonso looks pretty much untouchable, but if the new Bridgestones work well, I expect to see Ferrari and Williams make big steps forward.

I know it wouldn't go well with the red Emirates Air colors on the wings, but I really do wish McLaren had used their old-school orange paint job this season. The chrome paint is mesmerizing in studio photos, but the cars are damn near invisible most of the time on TV.

Anybody care to guess where Toro Rosso will qualify at Monaco?

Violence VS. Non-Violence ~~~ Debate
Time
Without evil there can be no good, so it must be good to be evil sometime.

Where I believe we may differ is that it is my opinion, that in order to preserve peace we must always be prepared for war. We must maintain the strongest military on the planet (they must train for war, not dig ditches in Lousiana), and sadly must keep terrible, terrible weapons at our disposal. But as the eagle emblem shows, we must have the arrow in one talon, and an olive branch in the other.

Amen, and well said. I would add that one must be prepared not just to wage war, but to wage it in such a way that the enemy is met with overwhelming force. If a potential enemy is assured of their destruction when diplomacy fails, they are far more likely to acquiesce. Of course, if self-preservation is a low priority (as it is with Iraqi insurgents and other terrorist types), then death becomes less of a deterrent.

Grand Prix - a transfer from laserdsic to DVD (Released)
Time
Mitch, from what I've read the 35mm prints were mono, and the 70mm were 6-track, so a 5.1 remix wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Warner has a very good track record with their classic releases, so I'm optimistic the Oscar-winning sound will be done right.

Suntech, I hate you for the simple fact that you've seen this movie on a big screen. Because it was Cinerama, from Hell's heart I stab at thee. Hmm, I might have to arrange my own big-screen showing some morning...

Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park'
Time
Yeah, Ric, the turnaround can be lightning fast. I can't remember the specific episodes, but there've been a few cases where they wrote and recorded the show on Tuesday night.

As for the premise: "Previously on South Park" (in a nonexistent episode), Chef decides he's bored and needs more excitement in his life. He sees a brochure for Super Adventure Club and thinks traveling to exotic locales all around the world sounds like tons of fun. He boards the club's DC-8 and flies off into the sunset. Then on Part 2 of "Life without Chef," Mr. McAvoy comes back home to the elation of the entire town. But people quickly notice that Chef ain't quite right, with a heretofore unseen desire to make sweet love to the children's rectums. The boys determine that he's been brainwashed by "that fruity little club" and set out to save him. Much hilarity and thinly-veiled slaps at Scientology ensue.

Chef's voice for this episode was cobbled together from dialogue recordings from the previous seasons. There are several instances where, in the course of a single sentence, he will go from a normal speaking voice to a few words of song to a shout. At the very end, his voice is suppllied by Peter Serafinowicz, who was the voice of Darth Maul.

[Cartman] Oh...my...God.[/Cartman]

Wow, just wow. I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. I think they went beyond disregarding consistency when patching Chef's dialogue together and intentionally tried to make it as glaring as possible, and it worked to great comedic effect. After the welcome back scene and his "You bet, goodbye, CHILDREN!!" line, I cracked up so bad I had to pause the playback. And it just kept getting crazier.

I just wonder now, will Mr. Derp take over lunchroom duty again, or will we be seeing more of Darth Chef? "He's more microwave now than man, brainwashed and insane."

For the same reason fishermen put spinning lures on their hooks, and rappers/pimps/NBAers put spinning rims on their vehicles: stuff that sparkles and moves will get the attention of dumb people/animals better than something that isn't so flashy. There are some aspects of Vista that are really nice, and some of the 3D stuff looks like it might have some functional use and be more than just digital bling, but I'm in no rush to upgrade. Hell, I've only been running XP for about 16 months.

A new chip that could end the HD-DVD / Blu-ray battle before it even begins?!?!
Time
Kill Bill Vol. 1 could be a better demo test case than Vol. 2. Like a lot of other Miramax DVDs (Cold Mountain, Hero, Gangs of New York), KBv1 was a nasty filtered mess of a transfer that lost a ton of high-frequency detail when one of the engineers got a bit over-enthusiastic with some of the tools at his disposal. Vol 2, in comparison, looked noticeably better. If there was a clean, unfiltered new tranfer (or at least new post-processing job) of KBv1 for Blu-Ray, it'd make for a much more impressive A-B comparison with DVD than Vol. 2 would.

Of course, I doubt the Disney/Miramax folks picked Vol. 1 for that reason.
