So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...
Time
If these are grabs from a DVD, which their precise resolution suggests, then JPEG compression should be the only quality factor to take into consideration (unless they've been analogue captured, which I doubt), but the DVD menus do look a little bit on the poor side if that's true. There's also a lot more vignetting (darkening at the edges, like the ESB menu) than there should be in the shot of the Star Destroyer over Tatooine when you compare it to various LD preservation screenshots. I have my suspicions that the images have been matted with black after resizing, if they came from a DVD capture, which seems an odd thing to do.

I also don't think the vertical resize can be entirely to blame for the menu's fuzziness.

The DVD menus do stick almost exactly to the 10% text safe area standards, just like the 2004 DVDs, if that means anything.

Info: Original Trilogy in HD screening this November!!

It's not an entirely analogous situation - for one thing, things have really moved on in terms of storage since those days. The ubiquity of today's DVDs, CDs, hard drives and iPods mean it's going to take a lot longer for all details of their workings to be lost in the mists of time - and in this specific case, the digital masters of blockbusters like Star Wars aren't going to lie dormant gathering dust in a basement for 50 years. Even barring George's own oxymoronic brand of perfectionism, they'll be seeing constant use (and constant copying to the latest medium) for decades, if not centuries, to come. If NASA's tapes had had the same kind of use, I'm sure they would have been transferred from tape to disc to hard disc to DVD-ROM over the years.

Another yup.

Trooperman, hopefully you're reading the thread because I've run out of PMs so I'm tagging your answer on to this (and it's mildly relevant anyway). The changes I've made to the credits used copy-and-pastes of characters or groups of characters from the existing credits (which make a better match for the existing idiosyncracies), so I've never investigated which font is being used. Your best bets are probably the Univers, Franklin, and News Gothic families (or failing that, watch Adywan's thread, as he's just asked the same question).

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
I think the idea that there should be hyperspace out of the window is taking things a little too literally. Although there's nothing to explicitly say so, time could have passed between Vader's scene and the next - and if it didn't, maybe the Falcon only made a short (in duration) jump.

If you do fix it, the next space shot (again with no explicit passage of time) of the Falcon is in normal space, so the shot out of the window would have to show the Falcon coming out of hyperspace...

I think I'll leave the jumpy lightsabre as it is - perhaps I'll repaint it in one or two of the worst frames,

As for Han, I think he can shoot as many times as he wants, especially since we never saw how many times he fired in the OUT

Here's some screenshots of some of the new changes (thanks to Sluggo for pointing out the third one):

Really no idea at all. Right now I'm bringing ANH up to scratch for version 3, and prior to that I was only working on ESB in fits and starts. The video for the Emperor scene is hopefully almost done, with just a few details to be touched up (such as one shot where the Emperor's image inexplicably stretches up and down in an almost comical manner, once you know to look for it).

Looks like there'll be yet another DE edition in the future. I've decided to fix a few more things, one being R2's black panels in space and the other being the elevator door that Sluggo pointed out to Adywan (I've done my own version which of course will look quite similar to Adywan's fix).

So, what else is still on everyone's wishlist for ANH? I might even do a little bit of colour correction, as I'm now using the Avisynth method for inserting my changes - certainly the desert can do with some desaturation, as Tellan pointed out in Adywan's thread.

Just don't say laserblasts and lightsabres*

*because I have a new idea for recolouring Luke's lightsabre on the Falcon which won't mean manually painting all of ~500 frames.

This might be an obvious question, but will there be global color correction done this film to account for the 2004 color issues? Was this done with your original edit of ANH? (As good a place to ask as any). Thanks!

Hell no. I'm not that obsessive

I think I've already got a better shadowing of the Emperor today, although it'll never match the original. Mine is the scuffed-up image on the right.

Sorry if it's already been covered, but the comparison shots of Sebastian Shaw got me thinking. Was much consideration given to using a PAL laserdisc as source, or is there just not a good enough PAL player? I'm not just thinking of the ~54 extra lines, but also of the slimey green cast you get on NTSC LD - will there be any attempt to correct that?

ADM, good call - but, to be honest, I doubt I'll find it with the right inflection, and may well have to go for another "yeah" moment - though for "yeah" I could get away with my crappy PC mic. Luckily, I have access to pro recording equipment. There is the "young Skywalker" bit but I couldn't live with that - he has to say Luke!

If I'm feeling generous, I'll post a screenshot of the new improved Palpy scene tomorrow. I don't want to get everyone's hopes up for no good reason, because as with everything it's a compromise between what we'd like to see and what's technically possible.

All I meant about not finishing the project was that I'm only progressing very slowly right now, and there's another DVD release around the corner. Does anyone know if it (by which I mean the SE+ part of the disc) is likely to be identical to the first DVD release, or will they fix the window in Cloud City, as was rumoured some time ago?
