That's what I wondered about, especially after Ady's ESB with the original Emperor. I didn't think stuff like this was possible.

He may have used that German digital broadcast of the 1997 SE, which I've got the Shaw ghost bit of somewhere. Don't forget that the original Emperor was low quality anyway - that was part of the hologram effect.

Another clip (which isn't currently working for me, damn YouTube):

There are two differences to spot (three if you count the fact that I haven't sorted out the sky colour yet).

Would anyone mind giving a rating (a truthful one!) to these other videos? They're the only two of mine that have no ratings, and they're feeling left out:

After a great deal of pain in the butt (and tinkering around with two different third party programs used together), I've been able to successfully rip a crystal-clear, 720p HD video of the ion cannon from Command & Conquer 3's game DVD.

I hope those images aren't representative of the actual video quality (which RS is too busy to let me download) because I don't think you can reasonably describe them as "crystal-clear".

Idea: Suggestion to Adywan for an edit in RTOJ
Time

This has created or at least helped to create the stupid action movie standard

Hint: they're action movies. It's not quite the same having the car/person get out in plenty of time and then having the explosion not quite reach when it finally goes off. Slavish adherence to physical principles and consistent scales don't make a good movie.

There is however nothing to prevent an attempt to fire the weapon on Endor before the reactor gets hit.

Except for the complete lack of explanatory dialogue - plus I think there's enough peril already.

Yum...! On a separate but not unrelated note could this technique be used in shifting Ben's ghost to his house in ROTJ?

If layered 2D sections of the interior set were fed in could that be made to match the camera movements of the live action in 2.5ishD?

Err... you mean on Dagobah after Yoda dies? I don't think there's enough of the interior in ANH to be of use. Oh, and, why?

Thanks Ady.

I've been in two minds about uploading this clip - on the one hand I like to get feedback, but on the other I don't want to be showing off all my changes before release. With that mind, this is my compromise - the new clip, but in low quality:

PS This, like the vane matte, wasn't done with 3D modelling.

If you don't mind my asking, is the only reason you don't want to use DE's technique for the vane shot because you feel you'd be copying him?  Would this be an issue for you, DE?  Perhaps there's a code of conduct among fan editors that I'm unaware of.

For the record I have absolutely no problem with anyone using any part of my edit for their own, as long as they don't try to pass it off as their own work. But, and I suspect Adywan may feel the same way (though I'm not suggesting he would want to use my shot), it would feel like I was cheating myself to use someone else's work. It is kinda hard not to "draw inspiration" (i.e. nick the idea) from some of the stuff Ady's done, though! ;)

I'd also like to publicly thank Adywan for taking the time to help me out with a bit of broadcast HD footage I needed for my edit - thanks!

Because with the amount of motion in the camera, there's no parralax on either the fog or the greebly detail in the background.

It never occured to me that the whiteness at the bottom of the painting was meant to be fog. If I was going to redo this, I might try to tone it down. I won't add 3D fog because there's none in subsequent shots down the shaft.

I'm not sure you what you mean about "greebles", but  I don't think there are meant to be any lumps and bumps in the wall's surface that would be big enough to show parallax over such a small move.

This shot would look way better if the matte was on a 3D mesh and the camera was given a bit of movement-- not to mention that Palpy's lightning looks like crap, and the explosion at the end could stand to be much better if it were re-done.

That's one case where I think the shot is so iconic and dramatic that if any 3D effect is added it should be incredibly subtle, on the order of pixels. More important would be some more interactive lighting effects to bring out the levels of the walkways, maybe they have them throw some extra shadows.

But that's Ep VI, of course, and this is Ady's Ep V thread, so...

As an example, say you're the president of the United States. Your vice president is looking for two droids, and the secret service tugs some car into the driveway of the white house and they inform you the license plate match that of a car that shot it's way out of "Elm Street".

Or, your VP looks for the droids, doesn't find them, comes back, quite probably (albeit offscreen) fills you and your senior staff (of whom the guy on the speaker is quite possibly a member) in on the details, including the fact that he sent a detachment of troops into said Elm Street to look for the droids.
