Yeah but the last real nintendo console in terms of a library of games worth owning first and third party was the snes.  Ever since then they have had a weak library of games if you take Mario, Zelda and Metroid out of the equation.  The wii only has about 3 games worth owning imho and they are easily beaten and then the system is as good as a paperweight, The console is a gimmick even miyamato knows it is and still does not care.

They only wanted to do something different than their competition, but there is nothing revoltionary about the wii, not graphics not gameplay zero, nothing zilch...

Because the PS3 and X-Box 360 are so innovative doing the same thing last generation did, only bigger.

The DS has a better catalog of games at least to me being an avid Rpg fan and gamer another reason why the wii is such a failure.  Perhaps final fantasy crystal bearers will fix that if it does ever get finished, lol.  Or if they put out a real dragonquest game on the wii.

They are making a Dragon Quest game for Wii.

The whole point of the Wii was to attract new customers into gaming. Nintendo can't compete for the 'core' gamer. The Gamecube proved that. It had some of the finest damn games of the generation, and still came in third place. It's a sad fact that the market goes for the violence and the gore, and Nintendo doesn't do that. They needed a pardigm shift. That was Nintendo's stated business model from well before the system was released. They really had no choice. Nintendo is a company that makes things for one industry: video games. They don't have money to burn like Sony and Microsoft. They don't have other divisions to keep them afloat if the games division isn't doing so hot.

Nintendo knows full well that HD will be standard sooner or later. They never intended an 'either/or' choice for the Wii. The Wii does something different; the other two do something proven. They've never been shooting for the same market. Nintendo isn't putting a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to buy the Wii, and there's absolutely no reason aside from finances that you have to choose the 'hardcore' X-Box/PS3 or the casual Wii. Theres no reason that World of Goo (which could not be done on the other two consoles) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (which also could not be done on the other two consoles) should be somehow mutually exclusive.

I understand why you'd be frustrated with Nintendo, and even have legtimate reasons to dislike the Wii, but acting like it's somehow a failure on Nintendo's part is fanboy entitlement at its worst.

I'd say Nintendo's next system will probalby be similar to the X-Box 360 in terms of power, will probably feature a signficiantly larger ammount of internal memory if not a full HardDrive, and still be focused on alternative methods of play like motion control and social gaming.

Whether they focus on the avid or the casual gamer really depends on the continued success or future downturn of the Wii.

I scanned my computer and found no viruses. Perhaps I have some outdated driver, but I have no idea which one I'd have to upgrade.

I've altered IE's proxy settings, only to have them jump back to what they were as soon as I try to connect somewhere. And as I said, when I use a different connection, IE works just fine. It happens whether I'm plugged directly into my modem, or if I'm going through a router.

And I'm not being defensive here, I'd be glad to be proven wrong if it would make my computer work properly. But if I'm really that incompetent and you're really so computer-savvy, please tell me what the problem is and I'll be glad to admit you were right.

Thanks, bkev, I hadn't heard of that...

Edit: Unfortunately, my ISP blocks the IE tabs even in Firefox. -_-

I don't have a solution but an ISP that ONLY allows Firefox, is that even legal? And why do they only allow Firefox?

Of course they don't bloody block IE. Bittorrent possibly, but how the hell can an ISP tell which browser http traffic is going to? I'm calling bullshit on this one.

Call bullshit all you want, it's the truth. Why would I make something like this up?

I know it's the fault of my ISP because I used the same computer with a different internet connection (it's a laptop) and IE works just fine. Now I don't think it's intentionally blocking IE, it's just that Comcast in their colossal incompetence has me on a proxy that happens to stop IE traffic.

Regarding Call of Duty:WAW, it's true that it looks basically like a PS2 game in 480p, but that's less a problem with the hardware and more a problem of lazy developers. Games built for the Wii from the ground up tend to look considerably better.

Sure, it doesn't reach the level of the X-Box and PS3, but I'd hardly call The Conduit ugly.

I doubt it's really due to piracy so much as it is due to the console market being more lucrative (at the moment, at least.)

PC developers have to straddle the line between putting out something that looks amazing and something that will actually run on enough computers to make its money back. The difficulty of keeping up with the latest tech is greater than console gaming, where every game produced for a console WILL (theoretically) run on it.

If by Complex Games you mean RPGs (which all the games Tiptup listed were) then yeah, the PS1 definitely had more of those. The N64 was not the console of choice for RPG connesuiers.

If you're just talking about games that are more than simple button mashers, or mindless action, I'd say the PS1 wins out there, but not by as wide a margin. The problem with the N64 is that even though it has several of the best games ever made, those happen to be about the only games worth playing on it. Outside of stuff by Nintendo and Rare, the N64 library is kind of dire.

Hey, everyone. You might remember last year, shortly before Thanksgiving, my X-Box 360 died. But probably not. Anyway, it has happened again.

As if that were not bad enough, I can't access Microsoft's support website because the website does not display properly in Firefox. Normally I'd just switch to Internet Exploder, but my Comcast (boo hiss) service has a proxy that blocks any Web Browser that is not Firefox.

I tried calling the support phone number and it told me to go to the website. So right now I'm pretty much up a river of feces without a paddle. Or much of a boat.

I guess I'll just wait until I'm using a connection that supports Internet Exploder and go from there.

The visuals look great if you have an older TV to match the older hardware (480i/480p). Even the most gorgeous Wii games look like ass on a 1080p display though. Developers have to anti-alias everything to death to make it look halfway decent. And when you compare titles common to all systems, like COD4, the Wii's visuals are sorely lacking. I've yet to see a Wii title that's significantly better than Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube, but I've seen plenty of titles on the 360 and PS3 that easily surpass it.

I counter with Mario Galaxy. It looks incredible on my widescreen HDTV.  Also, Call of Duty 4 did not come out on the Wii. And no crap the X-Box and PS3 titles surpass it. Nobody is arguing that the Wii looks as good as them. What I'm saying is that good art design and intelligent use of hardware can still make a damn fine-looking game with out the power of the other two consoles.

The Wii controller's accuracy is laughable. The fact that there needs to be a visible target onscreen for gun games is proof of this. You're not actually aiming at anything; you're using the controller to move the targeting sight around the screen. Add the fact that there's no difference in a game's response between the player doing a full backhand swing in tennis and the player flicking his wrist, and you have all the proof you need that it really is a gimmick.

It's still more visceral than pressing a button. Yeah, Wii Tennis kind of sucks, but the motion sensing for Wii Bowling is fantastic. It's not inherently gimmicky, Jay. The problem is that most developers haven't used it for anything more than gimmicks. Good first person shooters and some unusual games like Zak and Wiki make great non-gimmick use of the technology.

And if Nintendo thinks all these non-traditional gamers buying into the gimmick today will fork over the cash tomorrow when they finally release a real piece of hardware, they have another thing coming.

If the 'real piece of hardware' that Nintendo releases in the future still supports the mass-market casual gamers for an affordable price, they'll still eat it up.

I mean this in a completely friendly way, Jay: you're full of crap!

No, seriously. The Wii control itself isn't inherently gimmicky--in the right games, it's a huge asset. And the inferior hardware is still capable of some downright beautiful visuals in games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3.

The Wii's problem is that nobody is taking it seriously right now--not even Nintendo. When the best thing they have for the Christmas season is a rehash of Animal Crossing, there is definitely something WRONG with the picture. Also, Nintendo has been developing new intellecutal properties, or bringing ones over from Japan. Animal Crossing,  for one. Pikmin, Disaster: Day of Crisis*, Operation HAMMER, and all the new Wii and DS Casual IPS. They also brought the Advance Wars and Fire Emblem series over from Japan, and those have been seeing success.

The problem with their approach as of late is simply too much focus on the casual market and not enough focus on avid gamers. And if Nintendo can't be convinced to give a crap about us, then how are they going to convince the third parties?

At least we're getting MadWorld and The Conduit next year.
