Yeah, I prefer the Kotos over the GG busts for sure. Most GG pieces just look "cheap" to me.
You will love the Sideshow Han. It's going to be huge! Vader will be very impressive.
You should pick up Luke now. The flood of them is on ebay and dealers are trying to get rid of their extra stock. It is easily worth the $250 retail price and you can find it for $150 or so shipped now. Go for it!
I cannot stand it when people have nice collections but they are just placed right by each other, giving it a "junky" feel.
Citizen sent me a copy to view on my high end theater:
119" 16:9 screen 720p Infocus 7200 projector Yamaha RXV-2400 Paradigm 7.1 Studio Reference speakers Buttkicker and Bass shakers etc.
I have probably seen over 15 different versions of Star Wars on DVD. Some were VERY bad and others were just ok. I liked Mother's transfer but the audio was lacking. The "wheel" version was also one of my favorites.
I do not consider the SEs or 2004 releases to be "true" Star Wars. The 2004 DVD release had so many issues it made me sick.
Now to Citizen's version.
I am FINALLY happy after YEARS of trying to find a "great" version of the Star Wars on DVD.
Even on a 119" screen, the video is top notch. Both the 2.0 and the 5.1 mix sound great with plenty of bass. The DL version's quality looks like it could almost pass as an official DVD. This is one amazing PAL transfer and I was thrilled when I saw the first demo disc. I enjoyed it so much, I actually helped Citizen out by donating a 200gb hard drive to help him out with TESB and ROTJ. He deserves it!
I watched all of ANH last night and loved it. I finally have a quality version of Star Wars.
I finally got around to watching Citizen's discs on my home theater (119" screen / 720p Infocus 7200 FP / 7.1 / scaler, etc).
In my opinion, this is the best set released so far. The video quality is incredible and the audio is also top notch. I still prefer the 2.0 mix and then I let me receiver convert it to 7.1
There is a small difference in detail between the single and dual layered disc but it's not that noticeable unless your display is greather than 100"....even then the single version is still VERY nice.
Awesome job Citizen! I am really looking forward to TESB and ROTJ.
Your DVDs will be the only way I watch Star Wars from now on.
For kicks and grins I put in my old Dr. Gonzo set to compare as well.
NO COMPARISON. Your version rocks!
Doctor M's is probably second best now and his is still very good.
Let me know if you want more details. I plan on watching more later this week.
Right around chapter 17, after Luke looks at the twin suns and walks back in his garage, the audio goes from stereo to mono. You can even see the video do a slight flicker. It's in mono the rest of the movie.
I just confirmed it on three of my DVD players in my theater room. The signal still says stereo but sound is only coming from the center speaker. Before ch.17, it sounded great.
Someone else please confirm that has a higher end theater. I have a 7.1 system, 119" screen, 720p projector, IIx, etc.
Trust me, ANH's sound is off and this is a shame because this is one of the best releases so far! The video is very nice. I am about to test Empire now.
I confirmed it on my family room theater as well.
I tried various modes with my receiver and no luck.
DVDs can look very nice on a HD set. I have a 65" 16:9 set that has been ISF calibrated and I also own a true 720p projector (Infocus 7200) with a 119" 16:9 screen.
Make sure you have at least a good progressive DVD player if you are watching any DVD on a HD set. It does make a difference.
Better than that, there are some players that upscale the DVD to 720p or 1080i. They look even better than progressive players. Bravo D1 is an example.
Going from DVD to HD on a smaller set (65" or so) is not that big of a jump. However, you can see BIG differences going from DVD resolution to something that is in native HD on large screen projector set ups. I actually now have a HTPC array of hard drives with over 2 terabytes of storage...just for HD material. Got to love newsgroups!
Scalers do work but anything that is native HD will always look better.
I noticed a big difference between Mother's DVDs and all other ones that were released as well. Why? His has more resolution since it was from a PAL source. Scalers and Progressive players can only do so much.
The audio is recorded fairly low and there seems to be a lack of bass (compared to other LD rips).
I will watch parts of it again this week, as I only checked out the first 30 minutes or so. I *thought* I noticed the audio was slightly and I mean SLIGHTLY off at times too.
Now, the video is the best I have seen. Incredible transfer and there is much more detail compared to other transfers. I just wish the audio was from a LD instead of VHS.
That REALLY matters since I am watching this via a 720p projector and 119" screen.
