As I understand it, the idea is to do the best possible transfer of the laserdisc set, rather than try and recreate the original '77 release, in which case I guess they will be leaving it in??

NON-Star Wars Fan Edit and Alternate DVD Covers SHOWCASE

Since I'm a fan of the 'minimalist' approach, here's my custom cover for Ghostbusters. 'Tis very big, to keep the quality (I put everything, legal text, logos, everything but barcode) so it works as a useable replacement cover for whichever edition you have. The screenshots on back are taken from the recent re-release with the (supposed) new transfer, but their quality doesn't seem to be all that great. Anyone who wants to use this can resize it, as I wasn't sure how to without losing the readability of the text on the back. Distribute freely, just give me credit.

BTW, I'd love to see someone give this the "3D" treatment, since I have no clue how to.

Hi Doc,

Nice cover, and I don't know how to break it to you, but that's actually quite a low res in DVD cover terms. Here's a quote from the Star Wars cover thread which states the resolutions people are normally reccomended to work to:

or

Measurements for covers to fit a...

1-disc box set are - 274mm wide, 185mm high, with a spine width of 14mm - 3240 x 2188 pixels at 300dpi

4-disc box set are - 281mm wide, 185mm high, with a spine width of 20mm - 3325 x 2188 pixels at 300dpi

6-disc box set are - 288mm wide, 185mm high, with a spine width of 27mm - 3402 x 2188 pixels at 300dpi

With regards to the 3D look, someone has probably mentioned it in this thread, but I believe the tool is call Imadix or something and its for Windows. You can do a pretty good approximation in photoshop by doing a perspective transform on the spin a front cover, adding a stroke around the image for the DVD Case plastic, and then create your own 'shine' on a seperate layer for the fold in the cover.

HTH and nice job!

RatDVD - Please Use.

But Ell, you must realise this will be throwing away information?!

MPEG-2, like JPEG is already compressed, so the likes of WinRAR and WinZIP make very little difference to the overal size of a disc. The only possible way this could work is my transcoding the file to another format, or by compressing the mpeg frames again like ReMPEG does.

And here is the part of his FAQ where he talks about his magic codec:

Are there any more details about the Video codec you are using?

RatDVD uses a video codec called XEB. This codec is the result from an experimental project I did with some fellows and that does not use any XviD, x.264, etc. code although by the very nature of it contains routines which is similar in function and even to a small extend in output to what you’ll find out there – obviously I didn’t reinvent video-encoding. Since I have been asked here is a small summary of the codec internals:

* It is block based (No wavelets anywhere)
* It has a dynamic GOP structure, P frames have only one reference frame, B frames two.
* GOPs are significantly longer than normal DVD GOPs and always closed
* To avoid drift in long GOPs it has a build-in intra-refresh mechanism
* It has intra prediction significantly more advanced than MPEG2, but not quite as flexible as H.264
* It uses an integer transformation that approximates DCT
* It uses a piecewise linear adaptive quant. The Quant level is determined for each macroblock by a simple psycho visual model
* It has a primitive in-loop deblocking filter
* Mode decision is part lagrangian optimization, part ad hoc based on statistics manually tuned to fit.
* It uses an in-codec scaler and the actual encoded picture size can vary in both dimensions between GOPs
* In order to maintain navigation ability and the reconvertability the codec suffers some limitations that others don’t
* The MUX format is H.262 + some private extensions

The main reason for this codec was the ability to transport the complete DVD navigation data to be able to recreate the original DVDs. Now that this goal is reached I can look in more detail at the performance and quality optimizations since I believe that there is still a lot more potential.

Someone has been trying Jedi mind tricks on you, haven't they?

X-Men: the animated series (1992-1997) (Released)
Time
Hi Byakko,

Many Thanks for the images - I must admit, it appears that I misread your original topic header, and thought this was X-Men - Evolution! Glad I spotted that one before getting too far into the project.

What software are you using for authoring? My intention would be to supply TIFF files for all still menus & overlays, and M2V & WAV files for any moving elements (depending how everything pans out).

Don't worry if things go a little 'dark' for a while - I'll do my best to keep you up to date with this thread, but I do also have a full-time job to hold down. Give me a couple of weeks to try and get something working, and then we can take it from there?

Why post all of that if you have already decided what the disc order will be????

So we're ignoring REAL and MARVEL RECORD, and just going with the breakdown at the beginning of your list correct?

And were you thinking something along the lines of:

MAIN MENU
- PLAY ALL
- EPISODES
- BONUS
- SET-UP

EPISODES
- EPISODE 1
- EPISODE 2
- EPISODE 3
- EPISODE 4
- EPISODE 5
- EPISODE 6
- EPISODE 7
- EPISODE 8
- BACK

*Maybe Break this down into 2 pages of 4?

EPISODE 1
- PLAY
- SYNOPSIS
- BACK

* Perhaps the synopsis is included in the menu screen?

That's just off the top of my head, Did you have images already sorted out or should we just google for them? Exclusive to the show itself, or including the comic books etc? I'm assuming 4:3 NTSC?

No idea, no experience with IVTC - I think VirtualDub might do ok, maybe best to ask over on VideoHelp or Doom9 forums. You're probably still going to have to go through by hand, especially if the cadence changes.

3) Finding the latin-american dubs by Intertrak (you can take 5 mins a day to look for them and/or ask your acquaintances).

Sorry, wouldn't know where to go looking for these, other than googling for them, which isn't exactly a 'skill'

5) Finding the english or spanish subs (you can take 5 mins a day to look for them, I translate from either to the other).

See above...

6) Suggesting/creating menus, covers and labels (time consumption depends on your image editing/creating skills).

If you can post some idea of the breakdown of each disc etc, I may be able to come up with something.

That's what I thought too...but I already put that on one of the discs we've already released.

No, I mean an EPK that lucasfilm put together to promote the DVD boxset. It's not that brilliant to be honest, but includes soundbites from the behind the scenes guys and Paramount and Lucasfilm, I think Lowrey gets a soundbite, theres a few interview snippets from the DVD, a sampling of the menus and the raiders march. As I say, not great, runs for about 40 minutes in total.

Classic Edition: Return of the Jedi by Ocpmovie (Released)

Sigh.

And this is why seamless branching sucks.

Oh well, it's still watchable. Hope the break plays quicker on other players. It certainly plays fine on the computer.

Hey OCP, these sort of things will vary from player to player, with computer drives having a bigger cache, and so better 'performance'. The other thing to remember is using DVD Studio Pro, you're not doing "true seamless branching", and so thats why your branching isn't seamless. I believe you can get a better effect with DVD After Edit, but with DVDSP on it's own, you're doing a playlist, pure and simple.

If it's as half as good as ANH & ESB I'm sure the final product is excellent

Info Wanted: Raretv.co.uk - anyone have these projects from them?
Time

I used this site a couple of times before they were shut down, and I was wondering if people either had copies of their titles or had done their own transfers of such gems as:

  • Galactica 1980
  • Manimal
  • Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

Obviouslu the original site was about selling these titles which we all know is a big no no but I was wondering if there was much interest here in preserving TV Shows as well as Movies.

Idea: Selectable Optional Scenes on a DVD?
Time
Multiple Angles have to be of the exact same length, you could have multiple audio streams and change the angle and audio, but it would be non-seamless.

The only way to properly achieve this is with Seamless Branching / Seamless Multi-Story, which is not possible on any of the DVD authoring tools available to people on this list (unless somebody has a toshiba / panasonic system tucked away which their keeping quiet about )

This comes up every couple of months - short answer is can be done (properly).
