Info & Request: Muppet Christmas Carol - Widescreen w/ deleted song and Dir. commentary!
Time

For anyone who’s curious, I can verify that the version JMOD5454 has looks fantastic. It’s the best HD capture I’ve seen, plus it includes subtitles, 5.1 surround audio, and chapter markers. It’s obvious that great care was taken in its creation.

For me, the only thing that could make it better would be some minor stabilization to the added scene, which has been an issue for me no matter where I’ve watched the scene (iTunes Extras, MoviesAnywhere, Amazon, Disney+, etc.). It suffers from a jittery/jumpy picture due to the way the scene was initially captured from the original source material.

If anyone is interested, I have created a version that addresses that issue using some image stabilization software and some manual frame-by-frame tweaking. There is little to no image cropping, so in my opinion, the stabilized version looks better overall, but feel free to judge for yourself. (PM me for a link.)

DJPitaB, yeah, I’ve done similar. When wanting to average/median five or so VHS captures of the same thing I’d have five or however many VirtualDub instances open, would comb through…

I guess I was hoping you had some magic software to share, but wishful thinking. Thanks for the reply.

Sure thing. I wish I knew about said magic software, but my repeated searching for such a thing leads me to believe it doesn’t (yet) exist. If anyone here can tell me different, I’m all ears!

DJPitaB, your (solid) way of dealing with any dupe frames in video… Real quick so as not to de-rail this thread (I don’t have a way to do your wanted capture 😦) what is your method for that if you don’t mind sharing the info? Thanks.

Honestly, it’s a very manual process. Just for some background: I have a very good eye for missing & duplicate frames, so it irks me quite a bit when I see them. Because of that, I have a compulsion to fix these things whenever I can. It started with some music videos, then I did it with full episodes of TV shows, and eventually, full seasons of TV shows. It’s incredibly time-consuming, but oddly fulfilling when it’s complete.

If I have a source with duplicate frames (say 30 fps when it should be 24), I’ll slow the video to 24 fps so that every frame will show in the editing timeline. I then advance one-frame-at-a-time through the video and delete every duplicate. In the end, I should have a video that plays in 24p at the correct speed.

That process becomes more complicated, however, when something has been screen-grabbed, because in those instances, you’ll typically get both dropped frames and duplicate frames. When that happens, what I try to do is several passes of screen recordings (3 is usually enough) so that any frames that were missed by the first 1 or 2 passes will hopefully be caught by one of the recordings eventually.

I’ll do the same thing I mentioned earlier, deleting duplicate frames, but also noting any dropped frames and pulling them in from other screen grabs. I’m very meticulous, so it ends up working well; it just takes forever.

Looking at my iTunes extras today, it seems the version that is there now is higher quality than what was previously captured in this thread. If someone is able to capture it at the proper frame rate (or even if you can capture at a higher frame rate and send it to me so that I can delete the duplicate frames), I can put out a proper 1080p version very soon using the blu-ray and the captured video. When it’s ready, I’ll share it to anyone who wants it with 1080p video, 5.1 audio, chapters, subtitles, and tags.

Looking forward to getting a good capture from whomever can help!

The Muppet Christmas Carol (Released)
Time

I’m brand new to this site, but I have a 1080p version of this film into which I restored the song. I did it back in 2014, just for myself and my family.

I used the FS DVD and cropped the top and bottom to match the rest of the film I also color corrected to make it as seamless as possible. (I would have liked to use the WS version from the LD, but the best quality versions I could find looked worse than the DVD when upscaled, and only contained slightly more of the image.)

The sound mix is 5.1 surround sound from the DVD.

I can provide the file (~8 GB), if it’s wanted, but I’m not sure of the best place to host it. Please message me if interested.
