The Force Awakens, while the Republic sleeps

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT - PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Why did the Republic allow the First Order to come into being? Why didn’t the Republic utterly destroy the Empire and it’s remnants? How could the Republic allow the Order to build such a destructive weapon? Why do the Republic forces still look like a bunch of rebels? In the past 20 years, the USAF has upgraded it’s fleet from F-15 fighters to F-22s. Why hasn’t the Republic upgraded the X-wing fighters? Face it, the Republic deserved to fall in the first place. It’s like our US Congress, a bunch of babies fighting instead of taking care of proper business. I guess it takes an Emperor to rule the Universe, …and make the trains arrive on time.

There are plenty of real world cases of unsavoury regimes building WMDs…
X-Wings have been upgraded, supposedly - for cinematic reasons they still look like X-Wings.
We don’t actually see any Republic forces, only Resistance, and they pretty much get obliterated by the Starkiller Base weapon.

We aren’t entirely sure how widespread the First Order is. I got the impression that the Republic was larger with the First Order significant and dangerous. They change the game a bit by blowing up the main Republic systems

I went to check out the IMAX 3D version today, waste of time. Just found it distracting and a strain on my eyes. This was in a state of the art 4K laser projection IMAX cinema with a huge screen yet everything felt small and dim with the glasses on. The first scene was ruined by orange fiery particles floating in my face.
Only on a few X-wing scenes did the 3D add anything at all

3-D is not for everyone. And things floating in front of your face is kind of the whole point?

What I mean about the particles was when Kylo Ren is chatting to Max von Sydow I wanted to concentrate on that but the orange particles at the forefront of my vision. Something similar happened in the snow scenes but less of a problem as they were smaller and white.

I do concede that 3D may just not that well for me, I’m sure some people enjoyed or eve preferred the 3D so I’m not bothered that they did a 3D release in principle.
I’m more annoyed that with the exception of a handful of cinemas doing a 70mm viewing (which looks stunning, especially the 1.44 ratio 65mm shots) IMAX releases have been limited to 3D.

I don’t need that villain to take off his mask and show me his tender heart, how he’s really a good guy deep down inside and we all need to turn him back to the good side. Fuck that guy. I want Rey to defeat him. I want to see him punished for all the evil things he’s done. This isn’t General Hospital. I want to see the good guys win and the bad guys lose. That is Star Wars to me.

I don’t think we will see him turn good. Although similar to Anakin is some respects who turns to the Dark side out of desperation, at least in the case in ROTS, but you get hints at it when talking to Luke - “It is too late for me” etc. Kylo seems hell bent on the dark side out of choice alone. He’s much younger than Vader and not as battle hardened so we don’t get the pure mechanical villain.

I do hope Snoke has some other name that will be used as it’s just a bit rubbish.
I suspect he’s some old sith dude hanging out on the outer rim for 100s of years waiting patiently for an opportunity.

There’s quite a lot of KOTOR chat going around, never played it but it seems to be in my Steam Library maybe I should give it a go

She summons the lightsaber past Kylo without any effort in the final duel, which is fine because I think it >worked best cinematically that way, but there should have been earlier scene(s) to establish it.

I had a sense of the lightsaber having a bit of a mind of its own more than her winning a tug of war. Doesn’t really make sense but seeing as it can induce visions…

Why did it take them 7 films to realise that it makes the effects more convincing if the sabers actually cast light on their surroundings?

They do in AOTC… Anakin vs Dooku

That said, the lightsabers looked awesome and better than ever, they felt really physical and had a certain heft to them. Kylo Ren’s unstable beam and low frequency buzz was a really nice touch. I heard that they made them actually spark on set when they hit eachother. The bit when Finn is first using it more as a melee weapon than a sword is superb.

Been lurking round here for ages, figured I should actually register.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to see it again. Will be interesting to see if I’m bothered by “plot holes” the second time round or not.
I was lucky enough to see it in 70mm at the London Science Museum IAMX and it looked and sounded fantastic. My next viewing is in the same place but I may me tempted to catch a 3rd viewing in a 3D IMAX.

To me this was all about character introduction and that was pulled off superbly. Making Rey THE protagonist is great, finally a true female lead. The moment when the lightsaber flew to her (intentional wording) was my favourite in the entire film. Finn is interesting too - there’s a little bit of Kyle Katarn in there I think, his ability to use a lightsaber seemed to stem from his military rather training rather than ability to use the force but where his character goes will be very interesting to see.

Kylo Ren is a great villain for reasons already stated… The whole Snoke thing came off as a bit “Lord of the Rings”, even the name sounds a bit Middle Earth. Hopefully when we see him in the flesh they’ll do a better job. The Darth Plagueis talk may have some weight.

Would have liked to have seen more Poe Dameron, maybe we will in a directors/extended cut but who knows.

Music was decent, listening to it on Spotify I really like Rey’s theme. Use of the binary sunse/force music was excellent.

Other random bits: I like the First Order as a kind of Brown shirts of the Galaxy/junta. The empire was fascistic but we really see it on another level. BB8 is just the coolest thing.

I’m not really buying complaint’s about Luke we have no idea what on earth he was doing, I’d be surprised if he really had just gone to sulk on a mountain.

Issues I did have;
Probably a bit too similar to A New Hope. Did we need another desert planet and Death Star?
C-3PO sounded a bit off, maybe they had to adjust something in dubbing to make it fit.
Five Planets get blown up and people don’t seem that bothered, but this isn’t new to Star Wars… I feel like bits around there may have been cut out.
Occasionally dialogue felt a tad forced.

Anyhow, big thumbs up from me overall.
