What is so wrong about gay romance being in Star Wars?
Time

Nothing wrong with it but doing it for the sake of it would be pointless. Any notion of a Poe and Finn relationship is ridiculous. Finn with his “boyfriend” remark did subtly hint at an attraction to Rey already anyway. For all we know Poe could be gay, but frankly I don’t care, if they want to make a passing reference to it then fine, making a story out of Poe’s love life whichever way he swings would probably be some unnecessary side story.
Of note, our two major relationships in Star Wars result in important children and at this stage there is also the possibility of Rey being Luke’s daughter so a non-reproducing relationship has something of a dead end to it rather than being part of a saga.

As for romance generally - it doesn’t really work in the PT (I don’t like sand etc) and in the first two OT films it’s tied in with the Luke/Han rivalry so it serves a function.

What Didn't You Like About ROTS?
Time

Some of the dialogue is just shocking, especially Anakin
“My powers have doubled since the last time we met”
Ah you were Attack +33 but now I see you have +55 and Agility bonus…

“You will try”
Is that even a sentence?

“If you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy!”
ooh i’m soo scared.
I mean compare that with
“If you will not fight then you will meet your destiny”

Palpatine is overdone, the makeup is awful and plasticky, not to mention… POWER!!!

The final battle is so long and drawn out and it all comes down to “I have the higher ground”, they’ve been battling for what seems like hours and Obi Wan gains an advantage by jumping up a bit?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYakQzVyWug

Other than that I find it fairly enjoyable…

Could "Force Vision" explain how Leia knows what her mother looks like? Discussion
Time

I don’t think you need a Rey style vision to explain this just some sort of Force thing. She does say “images, feelings”, not “She died when I was 5” so it’s not the most inconsistent thing.
I suspect they went back to the “kind but sad” thing for padme, I don’t think they pulled it off particularly well but I do detect that they were aiming for it.

The Force Awakens in 70mm IMAX
Time

Side note, can anyone explain what the benefit of the Falcon scene being shot in IMAX is? I’ve seen it twice in IMAX 3D and I notice nothing noteworthy about it (other than it’s exciting and totally kicks ass anyway!).

Watching on 70mm at the Science Museum London…twice:
A) The aspect ratio. The screen expanding to 1.44 just completely fills your vision and makes it more immersive.
B) On the huge screen the image was of a different quality compared to the 35mm footage. This is the same as when watching Interstellar (or Dark Knight/Rises), although to a lesser extent.

I saw it once in IMAX 3D as well, the difference was not as noticeable, the screen was a 1.9 aspect ratio so although it expanded it wasn’t as much. The 3D was giving me a headache and eyestrain, though, so I can’t comment too much on it.

No idea about Dome Viewing

In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?

Max Von Sydow’s death at the beginning was a device/trick, but a really good one, got us invested immediately. His mystery was welcome. Every story needs unopened boxes, especially serial ones.

I think there’s a hint in there. When Lor/Max mentions his family, and Ren goes “you’re so right” and proceeds to kill him that’s a Vader clue IMO

As for something new to moan about has anyone mentioned how odd the crawl looked?
To me it seemed more yellow than usual and the stars were much brighter or was that just because it wasn’t some crappy blu-ray transfer? 😄

I thought the crawl looked a little different in the 3D presentation and normal in 2D.

In my 70mm viewings the stars were definitely blue. in the 3d imax I think less so, but I don’t really remember

Apparently we will not get a director’s cut but we will get deleted scenes on the blu-ray package.

I think we will also see some 4k/UHD/HDR release at some point too, especially as there was a Dolby Vision master (and from googling around it looks stunning).

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

I do like that another non-dark side Skywalker was revealed to exist. It allowed for Vader’s “If you will not turn, perhaps she will,” moment and Luke’s reaction to it.

Interestingly, if you look very closely at Vader he is holding Luke’s lightsaber at that point. He was supposed to have thrown it away. oOssibly why it is a bit off how Luke comes out of nowhere as there is footage not in there.
Also, this is the first example of “Force interrogation” we see, pre-Kylo Ren…
That is one of if not the hi-light of the OT for me. The music for that sequence is just superb.

Council meetings or discussions in the prequels don’t bother me in principle but the dialogue is just so badly written and acted and the unbelievable CGI surroundings don’t make them engaging or interesting.

Anyhow ROTJ is the film I like to watch the most, probably just because it’s the last one. In the first half I like the Jabba’s palace stuff it’s fun and exciting. In the second half it’s all about the Luke Vader Emperor triangle which is just brilliant, the rest of it is a little bit of a sideshow.

Have you noticed any differences in various screenings of TFA? [SPOILERS!]
Time

I’ve seen it twice in 70mm IMAX 2D and once in IMAX 3D. Something seemed slightly different in the first Rey scene but I can’t be sure - I spent most of that trying to not get a headache so not that reliable.

the 70mm screening expanded to 1.44 but the IMAX 3D i saw was in a 1.9 aspect ratio screen so it did expand but not as noticeably.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I think it’s fairly well established that use of the Force is not a game of top trumps.

Conjecture like “if Rey is awakened why couldn’t she stop the force push on to the tree” this isn’t a video game where you have force levels and you automatically stop Force Push attacks. She’s not really expecting Kylo Ren to suddenly throw her against a tree and is not making any concerted effort to combat that.

Rey beats Ren because she finds some strength in the force, who knows maybe Qui Gon Jin is talking to her or Luke is doing something it’s not really important, she takes him by surprise and as he’s not in a focussed state of mind and is already pretty beat up.

“She’s not ready” is not the theme of THIS film. If anyone is not ready it’s Kylo Ren, masterful with tricks and wizardry but prone to mistake and rash behaviour. Instead of finishing her off when he had the chance he gives her time to think, in hope that she can become an apprentice.

As for the “lightsaber belongs to me” it’s a family heirloom to him, I got the impression he knew who’s it was - I guess there could be a bit more to it than that.

But he didn’t want to bring him to the Emperor without incident. He wanted to tell him he was his father and that he could destroy the Emperor so that they could rule the galaxy as father and son. How was he planning to do that when his son was frozen in carbonite?

What I meant by “without incident” is Luke trying to escape once he’s arrested. Carbonite would have ensured that wouldn’t happen.

The original intent is clearly to get him in carbonite but when that fails due to Luke being more difficult to handle and strong with the force/ more powerful than expected he uses the opportunity to be a backstabbing Sith Lord(you could argue that this is the rule of two being introduced informally)

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

The way I see it…
In ESB Vader is a total badass, he’s just toying with Luke then when he gets pissed off he starts throwing stuff at him and eventually chose his arm off. Vader has no intention of killing Luke he would have done so easily.

In ROTJ again he’s not really trying to defeat Luke - In a straight fight you’d probably put money on Vader, seasoned Jedi killer… But he’s conflicted and not quite all there. So in one of his evil swings he’s talking to Luke and Luke flips and surprises Vader we get some epic music and now Vader loses an arm.

We don’t see a straight out lightsaber duel until TPM, really.

So in Rey vs Kylo again Kylo isn’t really trying to win he’s trying to make Rey submit. In addition he’s a bit messed up - just killed dad and took a bunch of various hits already. Something stirs in Rey, she lets the force take over or something and takes him by surprise and as he’s not fully focussed she has the upper hand. It’s really not that different to ROTJ, even the music is pretty good at that point, there’s a great line when she’s standing over him.
Ren is flawed, extremely powerful but makes a mistake… Just like Anakin who was in uber power +20XP mode made a mistake with the higher ground 😶
