MAC Question
Time
I just recently got an iMac for the home. Man, that thing is sweet!!! I ended up getting a used 17" model from when they just came out with this new "body" style. Mine had a combo drive so I purchased an external DVD burner which turned out to be the way to go IMHO. I did not like the slot load too well, and disks seemed to get really hot in there.

I hope that helps a little.

OK... Help me get started (Mac editing)
Time
Thanks, MoveAlong!

Does FCE convert the DV audio into 5.1 channels so I can edit the center channel as a voice track? If so, that would be all that I really need. (Should I assume that Pro would?)

I am starting to wonder if I should just screw around with iMovie till I can save up for FCP if I would be limited with the audio editing. Ebay has sold some FCP very reasonably priced. Is there anything I need to keep an eye out for if I go that route (versions to keep away from, missing software, demo versions... stuff like that)? I have already had a very bad experience with evilbay.

Thanks for your help!!!

Sup, DAYV? Long time, man!

I'd love FCP, but really is unrealistic for me. I'd really like to make this like a small hobby rather than that kind on investment. The bulk of what I would want to do is make some family friendly edits (mostly language), and maybe toy around with altering movies to my liking. I don't need many bells and whistles... just the ability to modify voice tracks and cut/paste video. Would something like Final Cut Express do that for me?

I just bought a 17" iMac G5 1.6GHZ 1GB Ram 80 GB HD... I'd like to start toying around with some decent editing in the near future. (piecing new music, dialogue, cutting and inserting video type stuff)

As far as I understand I start by ripping a DVD using Mac the Ripper, Mux the ac-3 and m2v with ffmpgx... then what, editing?

How about some editing software advice? Expense is a huge issue considering buying expensive things incorporates spending money that I do not have.
Are there some cheap alternatives to Final Cut Pro or Premiere? Spending a thousand is out of the question, but maybe 200-300... pushing 400 will hurt. Any advice would be much appreciated!

...and please be gentle.

Idea: Superman Returns - Spoilers... for a fan edit
Time
Watching SR the other day I was thinking how dramatic it would be to try to squeeze in Superman's return to earth by his falling to earth from the ending / hospital sequence. The main problem would be Supes finding out about his son... which may be something that may just click with him later... and how to end the movie without the falling / hospital stuff. *shrugs*

Just thought I would pass on the idea. On the surface it sounds like an unrealistic idea, but no more than Superman finding / making a spaceship from a desolated planet to get back home.

Any Guitarists out there?
Time
I have owned literally more than two dozen guitars in my life... My favorite of all of them was probably my ESP, and the Ibanez Prestige I have now. They all played different. One of my least favorites was the Gibson Studio Les Paul... I guess I just could not get used to the body style and painted neck. *shrugs* It is all a matter of what YOU want.

I have waisted so much money on guitars it is not even funny. I'd trade a guitar for another in a heartbeat. I was one stupid kid!

You can create pretty much any "sound" you want using your pick-up selector and effects. Good effects can make any crummy guitar sing. The most important thing to look for in a guitar is playability and action. That all comes down to preference in body style and neck. I have picked up some very beautiful guitars that just sucked!

As a newer guitarist you need to just get out there and look at some guitars, notice the differences in necks ( feel, thickness, finish ) and find out what your preference is. Sit down with them and see how you like the body styles and how comfortable it is to you as you play... after searching for a bit you will have a better idea of what YOU want, rather than go by someone else's opinion. Keep in mind if you will stand and learn, or sit. Some guitars play great standing, but are not made to sit down with. The more you fall in love with the guitar you purchase, the more likely you will want to play it... the more you play it, the better you will get faster.

Do you have an amp already? That can be as fun as looking for the guitar. Always save a little bit more money for a better amp.

I have always loved Ibanez. They have some very versatile guitars and a great selection in your price range.

I am partial to the RG series (especially since my inspiration brewed in the 80/90's with Vai, Satch and Eddie.) Some of the recent lower end ones made in Korea play nowhere as nice as the Japanese Prestige, but are a great bargain.

A used guitar, but not too used (like an RG 500 series) would be the way to go though IMHO. You can find a what used to be an $800 guitar for around $450. That way you won't outgrow your guitar because you settled in your purchase because of price. Fender is always a good choice of course, just get out there and play them all... then go online and get a better deal!

Wow! Something well thought out, not condescending, and understandable. Good job!

The Hebrew, especially those you are referring to in Exodus, have walked away from a God who had just proven Himself through all of these miraculous acts. Even then they constantly denied God because they wanted God to meet their own tangible needs. (I guess you can say that they did not see the big picture.)

Many were blinding themselves with what they expected God to be, rather than accepting who He really is. That carried on to their rejection of God's promise to come down and deliver them in the flesh. They are still looking for a Savior with a rod and a sword to come down and "open up a can" on their behalf. What they never expected is what they have rejected, that He came down as a humble servant to make a way for all who would come to accept Him.

This flesh can be very blinding. That is more evident than ever today. This world wants to mold and make God into what is convenient for us. That is where man is absolutely unreliable to follow, hence the failure of religion. You replace what man wants with what God wants you will see a completely different picture.

There is something that we all must agree on. There is one Truth, one reality. We may not agree on what that may be, but with so many varieties being taught... ONLY ONE group is right. When we inevitably die, some are not going to be re-incarnated, some just turn into worm food, others at the feet of Jesus for eternity, and the others with 40 virgin wives... there is only ONE reality. No matter how much we really, really, really want our reality to be the one, it will not change what the truth really is. We can kid ourselves all we want, but that is simply the case. Who is right? We all think we are. Who wants to be wrong? Nobody, of course.

I am prepared to meet my fate when my life ends. I do not fear death, but I also do not deserve life-everlasting.

One last note... you all mean something and your life is precious to God. We are not mere accidents in an inevitable evolutionary dead end. I really pray someone out there is out there getting something from all of this. What more can a Savior do to get your attention. Amen.

And if there turns out to be a heaven and hell (which I don't believe) then I don't believe I would go to hell if I've lived a good life.

By the way, where does the concept of a hell come from. I don't know much about religion but I think the bible only very vaguely discribes something only once or twice that can be regarded as a hell.

Nobody deserves to be in the presence of God in Heaven. I sure don't. Christianity has nothing to do with having the ability to be perfect, or earning the right to earn salvation through anything that we can do. We are all sinners in need of God's grace. Only through the cleansing blood of Christ can we achieve an Eternal Glory in Heaven with the Father. Don't look to Christianity for the answers, but Christ alone. Christians will always let you down, Christ won't.

Also judging by the last post zombie made, I am starting to become pretty sure he is pulling this stuff out of the clouds, and really has no idea what he is talking about. I have done a lot of study in Biblical archeology, there is nothing to claim the Jews were polytheistic. There were several times throughout history when many of them fell away from God and worshiped idols or false gods, but they never flip flopped on their own God. You have been terribly misinformed about this matter. And if you are claiming that the Old Testament depicts multiple gods, then I know you have no clue as to what you are saying. Maybe some scientist wrote a book about this or something, and since you whole heartedly trust all scientists so it has to be true. There are several names for God used in the Old Testament, this doesn't give any basis for claims that the Jews were polytheists, your whole thing about the translation trying to hind this fact is not true. Also you keep claiming that as you are bashing believers that you aren't really, you are just bashing flat-eathers. Okay, I really don't think there are any flat-earthers here. If there are, I too will take up a hammer and assist you in bashing them. Stop using this ridiculous excuse. I agree with you that it is undisputable that the earth is round, anybody today will agree with you, save for the same people who claim we have never gone to the moon.

I wonder if he has ever even opened the Word of God, that alone ever read a verse out of it. He is simply clueless about what he is talking about. The Word of God is infallible. Not wanting it to be is a different story.
