So you're suggesting a similar set-up to the scene Bootfit posted? I like that approach, as long as you can work in the necessary backstories (which you've already said is on your mind). It's more effective sometimes to just present something the way you want it to be rather than setting up things to get to that point eventually. In the latter the execution may not be able convey things properly, while if you start out with "this is the way it is," it's more readily accepted.

Obi-Wan and Anakin going off to Tatooine, eh? Interesting. What about an encounter with a Krayt Dragon?

About their ages, I agree about making Obi-Wan older than Anakin and Padme. Vader would be their age as well, setting up a triangle between those three characters (as opposed to the more obvious route of Anakin-Padme-ObiWan). That all depends on how you want to tackle the non-Anakin Vader being Luke's father, the most intriguing aspect of this project IMO.

It's good to see you're still at work on this, auraloffalwaffle. Don't be a quitter like me, though; see it through to the end!

A couple of thoughts on Luke and Leia:
-Don't limit yourself to making them siblings. Since you're rewriting V and VI as well, why not utilize the original plan of Luke's sister being hidden on the other saide of hte galaxy? Though I can see the disadvantages to this in only 6 episodes, with her showing up "at the last minute" not allowing for any character development.
-If they're not siblings, they can end up together in the end, something I would have liked to see happen. With Han either dying or him and Leia deciding they're not for each other. But again, with only 6 episodes this can make Leia seem less than honorable with her flip flopping between them.

Just a couple of ideas Lucas threw to the wayside that I planned to use in my versions.

Hello all.

I know I don't post in this section of the forum very much, in fact my posting is now almost exlcusive to the fan-edits section (the college life is a busy one), but I'd like to inform you all of an internet radio program I am involved with called "The Nerdocracy." The link can be found here: http://rlradio.org/ A summary of the show's premise is under "Show Info." This radio network used to be affiliated with RealLifeComics, but is now its own entity. Our current listenership consists of mostly our friends and people we know, so we are in an effort to expand our audience. I think the show and the topics discussed would be of interest to those here, so if you're not doing anything tonight (or any Wednesday night for that matter) from 10 PM - 12 AM CST, tune in and give it a shot. (And in case you were wondering, I'm the co-host.)

Thanks,

Yes, we were going back to the original direction of the saga pre-RotJ. Luke and Leia would not be brother and sister, and the final confrontation (centered around Coruscant) would take place in Episode IX. We would meet Palpatine in Episode I, but Luke would not face him until IX. A big idea I wanted to use in Episode III was that Anakin, seeking to become the most powerful Jedi ever, tries to tap into the power of the Kyber Crystal (on Naboo), but corrupts it with the Dark Side and ends up destroying the planet. "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force." That was always a line I'd hope we see a demonstration of in the prequels. At this point Obi-Wan would show up to stop him and they would duel with the planet breaking apart around them. My friend the LotR fan had some thoughts on turning the crystal into a similar object at the Ring of Power, with it being crucial to the saga. I didnt want our Star Wars to be Lord of the Rings 2.0, so I figured after Anakin warped it with the Dark Side it would be gone forever. Anyway, those were just some the the ideas we had (have). What are your thoughts on using the Kyber Crystal, auraloffalwaffle?

As you said, this kind of attention to detail definitely looks to put this edit in a league of its own. (No pressue, Adywan.)

Actually a couple of years ago, caught up in the Episode III hype, a friend and I set out to rewrite the saga as a trilogy of trilogies (as per the original outline). One major alteration to the saga as we know it was we decided to make ESB the conclusion of the second trilogy, making it the new Episode VI. Of course this left us in a tough spot as to what to do with Episode V. One of these days we'll probably pull it out again (we didn't make that much progress), but these things are time consuming if you want to do them right. He's a big "Lord of the Rings" fan so LotR had a significant influence on out ideas as well.

As for the droids, they should definitely be there. Memory wipes seem to convenient though; if they were a necessity, I'd say give one to 3PO but leave Artoo's intact.

This is a really great thread guys. I love reading everyones ideas for the prequels that might have been, although it just makes me feel even worse about what we actually got. When I see this kind of stuff it becomes clear to me that, try as they might, fan edits will never give us the Episodes 1, 2, and 3 we deserved. That won't stop us from trying though!

Bootfit: That was an excellent scene, and I hope you expand it into a larger work.

Auraloffalwaffle: You have some great thoughts on how the prequels should been, but I am especially interested in your "SW '77" version of the saga. It would certainly be a unique way of telling the story. Your dilemma on the "I am your father" plotpoint really got me thinking:

Back in 1980, when Vader made this revelation, did everyone necessarily think this meant Darth Vader was in fact Anakin Skywalker (and I know that name was not in the public domain until RotJ, but I'm using it here to make my point better)? Growing up with the knowledge of Vader=Anakin, the thought never crossed my mind, but based on how the facts were presented at that point, would it not have been in the realm of possibility that Vader and Anakin were still two different people, as you suggested, and Vader had impregnated Anakin's wife, resulting in Luke? Of course the entire dynamic of redemption and such in RotJ would have been radically different, but this scenario would have made for a equally if not superior story. Not to mention this totally salvages Obi-Wan's character, as he is being completely truthful about Anakin with Luke in ANH, going with the assumption that he is Luke's proper father. Does anyone think Lucas may have considered going in this direction but decided against it as it would make for a rather dark story? It would be just another example of him selling out in RotJ.

Wow, I'm really excited about this version of the Star Wars saga now! In fact, if you don't write it, I might!

Yeah, I really wish people would stop pointing out why giving the Gungans an alien language might not be as good an idea as it seems.

I guess I take a similar stance to MagnoliaFan on ADRing new dialogue for characters. While he doesn't like it at all, I think it has advantages when used for alien lanuages, but when it comes to humans and English I get cautious. I'd just have to see some very effective test footage before thinking an English speaking Jar-Jar is a good idea.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
The Imperial Fleet getting destroyed in the shockwave is a great idea! The only inconsistency I see with that is how would the Rebel Fleet escape the explosion and the Imperials, being on the "far side of Endor," not?

As for multiple Death Stars, I still don't see the advantge of another Death Star in RotJ. If we're adding nothing to the plot and it's just in the background, then what's the point? Having the Death Star II at the beginning of ESB can at least imply that the 2 Death Stars were built simultaneously. If anything, a very early skeletal Dath Star might be best added to ANH somwhere, in the background of the earliest shots of the Death Star I. My main objective with the Death Stars is to remove the "out of nowhere" aspect of the DS2 from RotJ and make it appear as if the Empire had a plan for them that actually made some sense.

More than 2 Death Stars is just too much, not to mention whatever plot threads we'd have to conjure up and tie together to make it work. As it stands, the current plan is to move the Death Star II opening to ESB, and alter the crawl accordingly.

And Darth Richard, I have talked to Adywan about the possibility of giving us a hand in the special effects department. He's very busy with his Episode IV edit at the moment, but is willing to see what he can help out with once that's completed. He has his own project he's working on though, and I certainly wouldn't want to take him away from it. I'm very excited about his versions as they look to be the most professional and extensive edits yet.

Now that's something I'd definitely like to see! I'd wanted to put something like that together for Starkiller Ranch but the dialogue and lip sync just made it impossible. I'm very interested in seeing how you pulled it off.

And Grievous in BotF, eh? Very interesting...

I'm still of the opinion the Grievous character would be best salvaged by making him and Darth Maul one in the same. This would of course require a voice actor for Grievous in Episode III to tie it all together, but if executed professionally I think it would work wonderfully.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Re-edit the lightsaber duel to give it more pace.

I was hoping you'd be addressing this. When experimenting with the duel for Starkiller Ranch I found that it improves dramatically by just cutting out the parts where Vader and Obi-Wan are stumbling around poking at each other. Something else I noticed was the amount of reversed shots, and not just obvious ones like Vader's chestplate. Be careful of the duelists changing hand position on their lightsabers, as they go from right-handed to left-handed grips and back again throughout the duel.

Very exciting news about the lights on Vader's chestplate! There may be nothing that can be done about his armor, but the lights will certainly go a long way into bringing continuity to his costume.

Changes to the gunport sequence are more than welcome! I've always found the TIE battle rather bland; the Falcon just hangs in space while a whopping FOUR TIE fighters buzz around it. I'm sure it was very exciting back in '77, but after seeing what spaceships could really do in ESB and RotJ, it's dare I say, boring.

Wesyeed:

You certainly have a point about the displays, but instead of "upgrading" everything in the OT, would it not be preferable to "downgrade" the effects of the PT? Trooperman is doing this to the Slave 1 in "Shroud of the Dark Side" and I think it's an excellent idea that works on two levels: 1) Brings some technological continuity to the trilogies (as you pointed out, something that is currently lacking) and 2) As fan editors, it is much easier to simplify than to enhance. Any alteration of displays is difficult, but I'd imagine plugging in an Atari-looking display in the PT would be easier to do than working a sophisticated CGI schematic into the OT. (And in addition to all that I think we're all alot more comfortable changing things in the prequels then we are in the originals). Just something to think about.

Amazing project, Adywan. It's wonderful to see this kind of top-notch stuff happening on the boards.

As for all these suggested alterations, it all really comes down to how much you want to change the saga. Take the Emperor in ANH for example; what I've had in mind for this scene is moving the Vader/Emperor conversation from ESB (with appropriate changes) and placing it at the end of ANH, just before the awards ceremony. That would require an establishing shot of Vader's TIE approaching his Star Destroyer, and you've already made something along those lines. So it's things like that I'm wondering are they even worth mentioning or totally out of the question (for you). The now-on-hiatus Starkiller Ranch thread has a multitude of ideas of this nature, which I'd be happy to go into detail with you on should you wish to dicuss them.

Again, it's encouraging to see someone who has the time and devotion to put so much work into a project like this. Yours is certainly one of the most exciting on the board!

PS. You have a PM.

Yes, I actually used a number of the deleted scenes, although they were changed just as much as other scenes in the film. The Jedi Analysis robot speaks in a different voice and has different dialogue (in order to eliminate Dex's Diner), the dinner scene is in, the bedroom scene is in (shortened and in a very different form), and the trial scene is in, again, with very different dialogue and music.
I was going to ask you if you'd had any success in making the analysis droid station into more of a Hal 9000 type interface? I know you had mentioned this before and I thought it was a great idea, but it's certainly wouldn't be easy. Hopefully something can be done about it though, because the droids are so visually distracting.

However, after thinking about it, I do want the Imperial March reveal to be at either the end of the film or in the next film. Not during that particular scene.
If this is your decision then I'd encourage you to use the KotR March for the Clonetrooper introduction and try to use similar KotR music for them throughout the film if you could. And the finale music is (IMO) the second best in the saga after ESB's, so I'd definitely keep the Imperial March in there as its big reveal.

It's also worth mentioning that there are no longer any little quotes of Vader's theme in relation to Anakin, in this film.

Good call. This really gets confusing considering the piece is titled "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)."

Regarding Jar-Jar, nobody seemed to like this idea, but I still think that if possible, Jar-Jar deserves to speak in English. He's such a main character in Ep. I; it doesn't seem professional in SW for such a main character to be subtitled so much. Imagine if C3PO was subtitled in Star Wars, for the entire film.

I see your point; it's a lot of subtitles to take in in Episode I, but lip sync becomes a problem when you limit yourself to english, as you've experienced first hand in re-dubbing Anakin. For the betterment of the Gungans as a whole, they should have their own language.

The more I watch the Dooku/Obi-Wan clip, the more I like it. I think TM is right when he says it'll all come together in the complete scene. Good comparison to the Luke/Obi-Wan talk in ANH where the Force Theme starts up. That's what made me think of using the Qui-Gon Theme, since he's who they're talking about. But no matter, I'm not even sure if that will remain in Episode I for there to be a connection made to it.

I'll comment on the Nemoidian voices when I get a chance to download them, but it's very encouraging that you have these up for all to see!

As for the scene of Obi-Wan surveying the Clonetroopers, I would use the most alternate version of the Imperial March that you can find (nothing too different, but a littel variety is in order as the first full blown version should be saved for the end of the film). The "KOTOR March" that Weezer mentioned is a great piece of music, but for something as iconic as our first glimpse of the Stormtroopers, I think it calls for the iconic theme of the Imperial March.

And to answer your question Weezer, TM is giving the Clonetroopers intercom clicks when they speak (unless that's changed without my knowledge).

Points taken, TM. I know you're trying to lock things down at this point, but would you consider trying Qui-Gon's Theme (the soft version played as he dies in Obi-Wan's arms) into the conversation at that point? I think it would be an effective tie-in, but maybe you were trying to ignore TPM's music completely. It might be something I experiment with if I have time, I think it has potential. I guess it really comes down to my thinking the scene would be served better by another piece of music than the one from "Vertigo."

Anyway, that's VERY exciting news about the language tracks. That's a mjor hurdle out of the way. As you mentioned that's one of the things that put Starkiller Ranch on it's indefinite hiatus. You mentioned Stormtrooper voices, what's your stance on Jango himself? I thought it would be an interesting idea to dub his voice to be more OT-Boba Fett like when wearing the helmet, assuming it had a Vader-like modulator in it. This would go well with your OT-inspired idea the Stormtroopers all have different voices.

The original Dooku/Obi-Wan scene was one of my favorites of the film, so maybe I'm just not as receptive to altering it as others are. One aspect I totally agree with is the visual cutting and close ups. The dialogue changes have me scratching my head though; why delete "Don't be so sure"? And while adding some more dramatic music to the scene may indeed be a benefit, this particular piece feels out of place. It doesn't help that it seems to come out of nowhere; there's no build up to the music or anything. I don't want to sound negative, I'm just offering some constructive criticism.

Also I'm going to try and be around more frequently then I have been over the past few months. I've been incredibly busy in the real world lately. But once again I offer my services as a creative consultant. Let the work continue...

And then, after a second screening, they reshot some of the Veridian stuff, because fans didn't like Kirk getting shot in the back.
So as you can see, the film definetly works without Kirk in the next generation part, because it was scripted this way. But my favorite cut would leave the Enterprise B stuff still in. Just remove him from the end.

I don't think Kirk was ever intended to die on the Enterprise-B and that's that. The whole incident was merely a vehicle to get Kirk into the Nexus so he could meet up with Picard later in the film.
