I found the new colors for The Thing to be better than the old Blu-Rays. I’d need to see some comparison shots. Has anyone made some?
Now that a Scream Factory new release is available - that has a better image, more grain, bigger frame, but still “wrong” color grading - maybe it’s time to use it as source for a new version…
Is there anywhere I can see details about the Shout! Factory version vs. the correct colors?
Just discovered this today. Amazing. Haven’t read the thread yet so forgive me if it’s been said, but I really hope ESB and ROTJ are planned to get similar treatment too! There’s been so many outright amazing projects on the original film in recent years sometimes it feels like the sequels are almost forgotten.
Nevertheless, GREAT JOB!!! Can’t wait to see the finished project. I really need a raise so I can start upgrading my equipment to both get and watch all this new stuff! I still have to trek over to a friends house just to burn a single layer BD…
We (the community, not myself personally) have some incredible sources for projects like these for Star Wars, but not as many stellar sources for Empire or Return.
I haven’t recorded it! It’s available for me to stream any time, though. I’m not sure what kind of copy protection they have on these sorts of things, but if I can figure it out, I’ll give it a whirl. It’ll be some time next week before I can try, though.

HBO Now has the film in 16:9, but I’m not sure if it’s open matte or cropped.
Woah, it’s not often that you hear of a movie’s soundtrack being tampered with. I’d love to see this done. We could get a complete version with the original soundtrack and everything.
It certainly won’t have more detail than the original negs, I don’t see how that could be possible as the prints are derived from them.
If they had more detail then I think we would be breaking some fundamental laws of physics 😃

Right. This is one of the only things in this restoration that the purist in me thinks is a bit “wrong,” but the perfectionist in me thinks looks totally awesome.
I’d say the HDTV 720p. Although it’s 720p and not 1080i, it is at a far higher bitrate, so I’d bet it looks better.

No, it’s encoded at 192kbps as well, and would not be surprised if the audio was pulled from the old DVD release.

Oh, that’s an interesting idea. My personal goal with the project was to create the TV cut in widescreen and in HD. While the P&S version sounds interesting, it’s not something I’d really want.

Indeed, it looks like the Blu-Ray doesn’t feature any other deleted scenes, or these deleted scenes in widescreen. Well, never mind. It was a nice idea.
Unless anyone knows of any other sources for the scenes, of course.
The HD rips on MySpleen look pretty great, especially compared to Laserdisc and VHS.
May I ask what the film is?
I think the 192 kpbs would probably be better, if only because the VHS tape probably has lots of noise and has probably degraded over time.
I recently purchased the new Shout! Factory Blu-Ray of The Thing, which is awesome. On a second, special-features disc, the set includes the Network TV Broadcast version of the film, which is quite a bit different. Unfortunately, this version is of low quality, as they have simply transferred a master tape (or maybe even a VHS tape?), rather than recreating the cut with the new scan and other materials. I was considering recreating the TV cut with the new scan as a primary source, but I was wondering if anyone here knows about possible sources for pieces of the TV cut that are not in the original.
I’d be using the audio track from the special features Blu-Ray.
Does the 4K version suffer from PAL-shifted audio? I’m not the best with such things as discerning pitch.
Also, was the 5.1 English track from the US BD (highest quality in world, thus far) ever properly synced to it, or does it sync already?
According to my ears, it does. Honestly, though, I can’t be 100% sure.

I was able to take a crack at it a little sooner. I have no idea what the blu-ray will look like, so this has only been adjusted per my personal tastes to improve the appearance of the laserdisc when upscaled to 1080p.

File size is bit large (517mb) to better preserve the light film grain I added to give this a more natural look. I appreciate any critiques and recommendations. I’d especially like to hear from others who have worked on laserdisc transfers.

Really? Man, I thought they had a good reputation. My bad. Should I be at all hopeful about their release of The Thing? The existing release is quite good, and I am only getting the new one because I thought it might be that much better.
I have had no issues with Optical Quantum discs. They have played admirably.
